  1. Any fallen “think big” players like when the Reds took Josh Hamilton? Brady Aiken or other 1st rounders?
  2. I remember when Tyme's used to be all over. Also, I live in Janesville, and work in Madison, and I have never in my life heard anyone call a drinking fountain a bubbler, except my aunt Hazel. Hey, I had a great aunt Hazel when I was growing up in Janesville. Hmmm. We didn't interact with her much, though, and I don't know her take on the public drinking fountain object. I remember reading a report that study out of Harvard (I think) declared “bubbler” the most regional term in the US. Pretty much found in SE Wisconsin and I think a little portion or somewhere far away like Washington
  3. With the rumors we are in on Didi, what would be fair value? He’s had two years above league average OPS+. His OBP is merely adequate. His homers and lefty bat are nice. $10million per season? $12million? How is his defense?
  4. Call the 3-batter rule what it is...the Tony LaRussa rule. We hated watching those games for years because LaRussa became a human rain delay by routinely bringing in 3+ pitchers in an inning.
  5. I agree, however one good season makes your value 'flippable' for a valuable asset (see: Grisham, Trent). I agree he needs to come to play this year! Exactly what I told some friends that were questioning us “giving up” on Grisham. I told them we added two valuable pieces with upside in part because we parted with a player that may have experienced a career year. Grisham gave us an initial boost, but some people seem to remember him raking in the majors
  6. You want some power at 1B and 3B. Flores has little pop with the bat and would be a 7-8 type guy. Not the kind you want as a starting 1B ro 3B. That’s kind of a bold statement. I want productivity at 1b and 3b. OBP is more important than power. Teams have been successful with non-power players at the corners. We just need to seek productivity.
  7. I fully expect Broxton to be our 5th OF. If he could just hit a bit more, he could carve out a Mike Cameron-like career. Ray really needs to do something this year in the minors. He has seemed a fringe prospect for some time, and one good season does not make a star (Brad Nelson even had a couple good minor league seasons).
  8. The new turf has the mower lines as well. I feel like it is inevitable that all retractable roof stadiums including Miller Park switch over. The benefits for hosting non-baseball events are too good to pass up. Teams have to be really careful with the synthetic turfs as well. If a stage tears it, it’s not as simple a fix as real grass.
  9. Given the 26th man and our current outfield depth, I could see is taking 2 players in the Rule 5 draft—a 5th OF and possibly a utility IF or defensive catcher with upside. I figure that given Gamel’s role, we can get by for large stretches with a raw outfielder
  10. It’s been frequently said that catchers develop slower than others because they need to learn so much. He’s turned his defense into a plus, and still has tremendous BP power that hopefully will translate some day
  11. This is the only sport with legit free agency. Nothing inherently wrong with it
  12. Why not try for someone like Lux?
  13. I’d consider Lyles and look into Aaron Sanchez. Perhaps Wade Miley if the price is right
  14. Miller Park has more sunlight than Chase Field. Some parts of Chase never saw light
  15. I’d love the incentive laden deal idea, with incentives tied to both starts and appearances
  16. they wouldn't have taken them. Grandal let it be known that he wanted to secure a high AAV, while it was surmised he wanted to come to Miller Park to put up a career year rather than playing 100 games between LA, SD, and SF. It he supposedly turned down 3 years and $54m last year, what would we have offered? As for Moose, he came back for comfort, to chase a career year, and to audition his versatility. I expected him to get 3 years and $40 million. I didn't expect the 4th year at such a high AAV. Simply put, your point is invalid, as what drew them to us was the 1-year deal
  17. As I pointed out in another thread, at this point in his career he has out-performed Carlos Gomez at the same age.
  18. my diehard Mets fan friend is in love with McNeil considering him an MVP caliber player. He says if we traded Hader we would have to give up other prospects to get McNeil. I laughed
  19. If Arcia were a college draft pick, he’d be just getting to the big leagues now. Let’s not forget he’s 25. He has solid offensive numbers in he minors, especially with regards to plate discipline. In Carlos Gomez’s age 24-26 seasons he had the following lines: .247/.298/.357 (ops .655) .225/.276/.403 (ops .679, at that point the highest of his first 5 seasons) .260/.305/.463 (ops .768) At that point most of us thought Carlos would never turn the corner
  20. SUVs are not terrible for the environment, and safer to drive than cars. I know the first one is a false narrative, as 95% of all vehicular pollution comes from the worst 5% of cars on the road—those over 20 years old, those not maintained, and those doctored for performance. The modern internal combustion engine—when properly maintained—emits minimal pollutants. The second seems false as well. How does driving a slightly larger vehicle lead to pedestrian deaths? In Az our grid system, high speed limits, and long yellow lights lead to pedestrian deaths, not SUVs or CUVs. But pedestrians not paying attention or listening to earbuds also are often at fault. Throw in that more people are walking than 20 years ago, it seems likely we’d have more people getting hit.
  21. You’re assuming they want to come here. We can’t just go shopping like at your Local store
  22. The 7pm thing is amazing to me. I had a friend return my call last week at like 7:30 saying he missed my call getting the kids to bed. I had to ask what time they went to bed. I think I now understand why the school nurse and my first grade teacher were shocked that I stayed up until 9:30-10:30 as a kid. With brothers 10 and 11 years older, I never went to bed early, especially during summer when the sun was out.
  23. I almost bought the new Rav4. It is cheaply built, pathetically outdated for a new remodel, lame features without spending luxury car prices, and has had numerous problems already. To be honest it seems likes Toyota knew the fanboys/fangirls would gobble it up and so they cut corners like crazy. In defense of real Toyota fanboys, we prefer to buy them off lease when they’ve depreciated by 40% after 2 years. I couldn’t care less about features - only value. The used car market is strong, so if your car depreciates 40% in 2 years, that seems high. Traded my Sierra in last year after 4.5 years and 85k miles, and I got just under 50% value in my trade...could have done better with a private sale, but factoring in Arizona’s sales tax it made the gap small enough that I wasn’t going to fight over a little money while having the hassle of selling.
  24. I thought that was due to the new ball and hesitancy to use the splitter, and that once he started using the splitter again he had better results in July and August. But he did seem to run out of gas in September; could have been because his 83 IP out of the pen, IIRC, was top five in all of baseball. He pitched in 12 of their 25 games in July and 14 of their 26 games in August, or roughly every other game in July and August. No wonder he ran out of gas in September. That’s my understanding as well. But who knows how the ball will be next year. Also, we could always re-sign him cheaper than arby
  25. His elbow had PRP and therapy. Most teams thought he’d require Tommy John surgery following the draft. It may be structurally sound, but so was Knebel’s with the same procedure. I may not be a doctor, but I assume a partially damaged elbow ligament is more likely to have further damage. Having adequate coverage in the infield is a good thing anyways.
