  1. So, these Winter meetings have the potential to be one of the less active ones i laugh at everyone's expectations. Don't forget that the last 2-3 years people have expected every FA to be signed, and 10 trades to go down during the winter meetings. In fact, generally the Brewers' trades of Overbay and Pods have been about all that has happened the last few years.
  2. Two fisted slobber, without looking at that list of comparisons, I would first of all point out that Schmidt wasn't very good when young. He had injuries, and occasionally flashed potential. I would compare him more to Schilling than the guys you mentioned. I say Schilling, because he really wasn't anything special till his 30s.
  3. I think it's far more likely we move Aquino or Sarfate in a deal than Capellan. Cappy was rather iffy at best last year, but the Crew loves his potential.
  4. Losing a draft pick should not be a concern. Assuming Graffy signs elsewhere, we would be adding two picks in the top 40-50, and only losing one for Schmidt. it's a net gain, and the pick would be higher than our 2nd rounder
  5. IF we landed Schmidt, I don't know if I'd trade for Lieber. Sheets, Schmidt, Cappy, Bush, Vargas is pretty good. although Weirdos, theoretically we could deal Mench for Lieber, Jenkins for something, and then swap Vargas and ???? for Baldelli. I'd consider Lieber or Benson an upgrade over Vargas. He seems like the kind of pitcher the DRays might like...high potential, fairly young, fairly inexpensive.
  6. Sheets/Schmidt would be hands down the best 1-2 punch in the league, as far as I'm concerned Brettac, perhaps that's the first time we've agreed on anything this offseason. While unlikely for the Crew to add him, it would be huge.
  7. actually, I'd be intrigued by a rotation of Sheets, Schmidt, Capuano, Bush, and Lieber/Benson. Why not add two? i'd much rather have them than Vargas.
  8. what about some sort of park adjusted stats, seeing as Lieber plays in a launching pad and against some really solid teams. Plus, as you point out, he's significantly cheaper. Seems to me that factoring in the park he pitches in, that his ERA might dip a bit.
  9. from what I understand, Schmidt has let it be known that Milwaukee is one of his favorite cities in the NL. Of course, that could have just been lip-service
  10. I prefer Lieber to those two.
  11. McDonald was a good pitcher until his arm blew out Endaround, it's amazing how many people forget this. They talk about him as a free agent bust and whatnot. But he had a very good stint in Milwaukee till his arm blew out. I tend to consider him one of our best forays into free agency. We knew there was risk, as he had a partially torn rotator cuff when we signed him.
  12. seriously folks. If I wanted to fortify my house, I'd be grateful for having Dan Kolb or Rocky Coppinger to put infront of the front door. What more fortifying could we need? So perhaps they're afraid their bullpen is vulnerable to outside attack, and feel Kolb can be the first line of defense
  13. wow, Mench for Lieber? Jon Lieber would be huge. He's an extreme groundball pitcher, an innings-eater, etc. I've liked him longer than Bensen. To think, I thought it might be Mench for Lopez, but I'd consider Benson to be better than Lopez, and Lieber to be even better.
  14. I thought they got divorced. I have long been a fan of Benson. I'd love to add him over Lopez, but really I'd take either.
  15. but should we really have to keep a platoon player around to be a defensive sub for a guy who would make near $20 million? the defensive replacement would be Clark, Gwynn, Gross, or Nix, not Jenkins. I don't think you'd use it much, because you would hate to have a game when you pull him out, then it becomes a close game again. Making that much, you'd want to maximize his at bats in every way possible
  16. you really think they'll get more than a solid-good corner outfielder, a top 5 Shortstop (an area of need), and a potential top 5 closer? I can't see them getting that much.
  17. brettac, the proposal I have in mind is Hall, Jenkins, and Turnbow for Manny and cash. So 4 years $78 million. We also know Attanasio dreams of a player of Manny's caliber. Hall is off the books, so there goes roughly the equivalent of $25-30 million for those 4 years. Jenkins is off the books, so there goes roughly $7 million. Turnbow is gone, so that's another couple million. Assuming he'd be re-signed anyways, lets say that is $7 million. So that's $40-50 million off the books. Assuming the BoSox throw in maybe $3-5 million in 2007 and 2008, that deal becomes much more palatable.
  18. I still think a deal that is Hall+ Turnbow+ Mench/Jenkins for Manny would be a very fair trade for both teams. It meets both teams' needs, and would be fairly close financially.
  19. thanks Toby. As was said, you helped bring many of us to the site. Just as Mass, and later Colby have cemented my brewerfan addiction, it was your efforts that first introduced me to my brewerfan.net drug
  20. Miller and Jenkins for Buehrle or Miller and Mench for Freddy Garcia I doubt either of your offers would be acceptable to the White Sox. Garcia is solid. Buehrle would instantly be our 2nd best pitcher. I think it would take a lot more than Miller and Jenkins to land him, although I'm not familiar with their specific needs.
  21. while I enjoy watching Bonds as a player, it would kill me to root for the guy.
  22. also Josh Wahpepah is missing, I think. But thanks, always appreciated
  23. I like drafting for overall talent and offensive ability, however, I would keep defense in mind, as I think it's easier to tolerate a slightly weaker hitter than it is to tolerate someone who simply cannot field or throw. In general with the draft, the offensive differences between players are greater than defensive, however, in certain cases a player's deficiencies should be considered a factor.
  24. Most of us feel that the Brewers and Dbacks both made out fine, but that potentially the Dbacks could wind up the big winners if Davis regains his form and Eveland amounts to anything as a starter. However, I think the Brewers made a mistake in not finding a way to get 1b/LF Chris Carter in the deal. I got to know him a bit last spring, and he's one of the quirkiest, yet nicest players I've met. Last year was his first in AAA, and he hit .301 w/a .395 obp and .483 slg. He hit 19 homers, but also had 97 rbi and an outstanding 78 walks vs 69 K's. He and Scott Hairston may be competing for playing time in LF, unless I'm forgetting someone. But I wouldn't put it past the Dbacks to sign someone, too. They also have Eric Byrnes under contract, and I don't see them asking him to sit on the bench after hitting 26 homers and playing a great CF.
  25. I've been saying all along that he'll end up in AZ. They have money to spend, and he's a Valley resident (may have been raised here). I would think a 2 year $12 million deal is likely
