  1. Why #4 upside for Ponce? For all we know he’s been working on things and his stuff will play up at higher levels. He was a very high pick, and has moved pretty fast
  2. So his ERA should get lower in Milwaukee, right? Arizona has balls flying farther. Of course it means more games in LA, SD, and SF, so maybe higher
  3. You'd think they could relatively easily roll that into the personal finance class referenced earlier, because you are spot on. It blows my mind how many people I know ran up big credit card debt on stupid junk like xbox games and clothes in their early 20s, taking advantage of the 0% interest for the first year and then next thing they know...their bill is $5k and they start paying interest at a 20% rate. Maybe I was just lucky that it was drilled in to me by my parents in my early-mid teens that credit cards and the interest on them is dangerous. That and the whole compounding returns thing referenced above. Fortunately, going into the accounting field required me to take a lot of stats, finance, etc...it is seriously amazing looking at my total contributions to my 401k versus my current market value at the moment. I'm only 31 and my first job didn't offer a 401k, so I've been contributing for 7 years or so and my market value is almost double my actual contributions. I put 100% to various index funds, so it's not like I'm being fancy with how I invest. To me, compounding returns and such seems second nature...to the point that it surprises me that anyone would make the error you described. We do have that. In AZ it’s a mandatory Econ class where we explore personal finance. I spend considerable time showing them spreadsheets, simulations, etc. I’ve had maybe a dozen kids open retirement accounts while in high school because they love the concept. I hope that I at least planted the seed for others, although I’m doubtful. Some are just so into the moment that big things in life aren’t worth it to them.
  4. Jose Mieses
  5. I’ve taught personal finance as part of my mandatory high school Econ class for 10 years. This year I have the weirdest gap I’ve ever seen. I have the really smart kids that listen and want to learn, the kids that try just a little but like to say “Econ is so hard,” and those that just don’t care. And why should I be surprised. Arizona has a half-day for seniors, so they don’t take senior year seriously. The kids work full-time jobs starting at noon. And there’s no money for college because the kids don’t save money or apply for scholarships, and the parents are over-extended in their finances. The reality is the parents need to model good behavior from a young age, encourage building of skills, and be supported by schools. Too many kids are given poor guidance by parents and then ask schools and jobs to teach them everything.
  6. trying to remember, but didn't we have a lefty minor league free agent about 2-3 years ago that had a really good camp and was looking to make the team until he tore his UCL? Who was that?
  7. Peralta could benefit from some time in the pen much like Woodruff did. I've always liked it when pitchers learn how to attack hitters in the pen, then transition to the rotation
  8. Not many tough lefties with low arm slots and a dynamic slider typically available. Kodi is just scratching the surface and should remain on the radar
  9. Not sure it’s totally unusual. Sometimes teams plan to swap out a player with another part way through the season (like the year for Hardy-Hall). When I worked in the AFL, there were some “trades” where a team had an opening for a player but none of the 5 clubs sent an extra player to fill the roster spot. The other 25 MLB clubs got asked if they wanted one of their taxi squad kids to fill the open roster spot on the other team.
  10. My first bought initially was that he played mostly 1b in he minors for the Brewers. It would be interesting to see his hit chart overlayed with Miller Park to see how many more homers he would hit. The problem is that Aguilar is cheap, a key cog in the clubhouse, and probably more valuable to us than others. If someone would overpay for Aguilar, then this could make a lot of sense.
  11. Thankfully, I don’t have to worry much about student loans anymore unless it pertains to saving for my son’s education. That’s still a pretty neat benefit. I’ve heard some companies are also starting to offer student loan assistance as an employee benefit in order to attract top talent. Personally, I think the trick is to avoid accumulating large debt in the first place unless a cost / benefit analysis shows it’s worthwhile. One of the biggest things I see with my students is that they don’t want to work to find scholarship/grant money. They just accept FAFSA. So they accumulate a large debt in part because working a job making $10.50/hour is more with their time than saving large sums of money by applying for scholarships and writing essays
  12. Nodakfan17 move to Maine where they’re trying to draw people by helping with student loans
  13. Is that true? I thought he only DH’d for one year
  14. I use friends in similar situations as you as an example in my Econ classes. I tell students that they NEED to think about what their retirement will look like as 17-year olds. Ive had at least a dozen high school students start contributing to a 401k or Roth IRA over the years...totally unexpected. I tell them that by 22/23 they should saving at least $50/pay in a retirement account. One friend of mine won’t begin saving for retirement until he’s in his 50s due to children, BUT he owns 3 rental properties. That will be paid off generating nice rental income by his late 50s.
  15. I think that was the brewerfan.com days.
  16. Cigarettes were shown to be hazardous to health and lead to cancer in the 1950s, but that didn't stop people from starting smoking after that. And it also didn't stop states from suing Big Tobacco in the 00s.
  17. Where did anyone say it was his fault? sorry, it was suggested the rehab was his fault.
  18. the Nelson injury wasn't the trainer's fault. It's a very hard injury to come back from. rotator cuff and labrum injuries have ended many careers. Pedro and Ramon Martinez, Alex Fernandez, Teddy Higuera, and many others weren't the same after them.
  19. He was getting tests on his torn UCL sustained in late August or early Sept.
  20. will we bring back Bill Castro? promoting Hanel to rest his knees?
  21. That’s no fun. Last I checked I’ll be at $2200/month at age 53, but that’ll surely go up since this is by far my highest paying year. The benefit to me going past 53 isn’t that great as it’d take several years to hit the next multiplier
  22. 53 normal teacher retirement age? In Arizona, those hired before 2011 reach Normal Retirement once they accrue 80 points, with age and years of experience counting as points. I’ll finish this year at 38 with 12 years of experience, meaning 50 points. 15 years to go. Of course, our pensions have always been contributed 50% by us and our wages are far lower than other states (thus our pensions will be lower payouts). Early retirement (age 50) doesn’t have a good payout, while retiring a few years later can slightly boost the payout. It stinks giving up nearly 12% of our pay each period, but the long term pension is nice. I’m figuring that after all these years of 40 person classes and 185 daily contacts, I’ll be ready to move on at 53.
  23. People are missing one of the strokes of genius with Stearns. He in effect turned the 25th roster spot into a revolving door of pitchers that ensures someone is available every day and gave adequate rest to our top relievers. Houser, Williams, Lopez, Asher, Woodruff, etc were all effective in providing length and absorbing innings from others. Also, if Woodruff and Burnes thrive next year, I give some credit to their pen usage. Relievers learn to attack hitters. The Cards have had great success over the years plugging reliever some into the rotation because the pen is where they learned to get big leaguers out
  24. Planning for age 53 when I reach Normal Retirement as a teacher. Scary that I’m almost halfway
  25. Clancy, I’m not sure I can assume Schoop outperforms Arcia. He was pretty bad
