  1. Melvin's mentioned this for years. He'd like to see his pitchers learn how to get through the late innings, and this is a way to do it. Many starters don't learn how to finish games. It's like a marathon they only start.
  2. I realize I'm getting spoiled when I see Biloxi gave up 3 runs in a Wagner start, and I feel as though we lost. Dude is 5-0, and his 2 no-decisions were 0 and 1 run allowed
  3. Don't forget, even Bonds' SF teammates barely tolerated him. He didn't make any friends in the game. Hard to introduce a 42-year old injury-plagued clubhouse cancer to a new team.
  4. 3.5 out of 4th place in the NL Central. Gotta say I love the Gomez in 4-hole plan. Lets us stack Braun's OBP higher. Last year we seemed in decline in June, then plugged Gomez into the 4-hole for a few weeks and he instantly sparked the team. He's always wanted to be a middle-of-the-order hitter...now's the time to see what he can be. I like seeing Counsell being creative, whereas Roenicke often played his bench players too little and openly stated his disdain for shuffling the batting order.
  5. So what's a good year for Jungmann in Colorado Springs? 5.50 ERA?
  6. So we're now 11-21 and 4.5 games back of the Reds and Pirates. We've had 2 losing streaks (4 and 8-games) longer than our longest winning streak (3-games). I've always said that baseball is about winning and losing streaks. Over 120 games, every team will play roughly .500. But do you have more long winning streaks or losing streaks? 10-8 the rest of the way in May would be nice, and would get us to 21-29. We really could use rattling off 6 or 7 in a row to get back close to .500.
  7. I remember being told by an AFL trainer that if a pitcher goes under the knife in the minors, he has something like a 5% chance of ever pitching in the big leagues. Of course, very few pitch in the bigs anyways
  8. adam, the problem is that if you take away all aggressiveness from Gomez, Braun, and Seggy, we may not win as many. The aggressiveness of those guys can be frustrating, but we win more as a result of their play than they cost us. I think Counsell is talking about playing smarter. Take risks, but not unnecessary risks.
  9. Well, with a win tomorrow that would put us at 3 straight non-losing series (6-4 record). I previously said I was hoping for a 6-4 homestand and a win would have us at 4-3 on pace. Right now we just need to chip away at the record. 10-21, but it would be nice to be about 8 games under in 2 weeks.
  10. Doesn't it seem like the Rays have lots of guys go under the knife? Moore, Cobb, Niemann, and I'm sure there are others
  11. TheStache, good comments. Plus there's the eye-test. Braun has hit about 8 fly balls to the fence. He's not missing it by much
  12. and the slider-splitter combination is easy on the arm? I'd start there
  13. unless they're a stud middle or top of the order hitter, it makes sense to rotate everyone. Statistically it doesn't make much difference, and--after all--it is nice to try to find something that works in the minors as well.
  14. So...will Hall and Wagner be in AAA by June 1, or will we leave them in AA so the thin air doesn't ruin them?
  15. 4-2 in May; 2-1 homestead so far, 2 straight series that we haven't lost! Fiers tomorrow for the series win, following that against the Cubs with Nelson, Lohse, and Garza. Still feeling good for that 6-4 homestead idea. I still love this rotation. The offense is showing some glimpses! Go Brewers! Time to win some series!
  16. It's well known on here that he was among the AFL'ers I liked least in my time. Granted, that was probably 10 years ago. He may have matured. He was a pain-in-the-butt to deal with. It summed things up really well that his fellow Braves on the squad wouldn't speak with him. When he would open his mouth to "just be Salty", they told him he wasn't allowed to speak with them. A me-first catcher that struggles to throw the ball and can't hit won't go far. He's made a lot more money than I expected, but he's no Miguel Montero, Mike Napoli, Ryan Howard, Stephen Drew, Casey Dangle, Huston Street, or Elliot Johnson as a person.
  17. Eye Black, last I checked, Roenicke had virtually the same winning percentage as Maddon
  18. Torts and MrTPlush, you're very close. MLB draft permits any 21-year old at a 4-year school to be draft-eligible. That's why some true sophomores can be draft-eligible.
  19. well, reading the new updates, the decision was made before the Cubs series but they needed to find someone. It makes me backtrack. Maybe it's not Counsell. At this point, Mark may want an experienced manager.
  20. homer, Macha handled bullpens alright? I think he made it a month into his first year before he lost the team, and that's about when his stupidity lost me. I handled some awful years in my youth, but nothing was as painful as watching his teams. So I never got a chance to see his bullpen management. I miss Yost's fire. I love Ron's logic.
  21. wow. I just worry about things. I still profess my love for Yost. I hated almost every moment of Macha's ineptitude. I enjoyed Ron. I'd like someone with a little more fire. Dale Sveum? Mike Guerrero? Ron Washington? Counsell? I miss Mark Loretta
  22. well, one series down. 2-1 in May. A 6-4 homestead would be awfully nice.
  23. I think we need to do a better job of re-tooling, but there's a problem. In order to follow the Rays/A's model of constantly re-tooling we need to draft better and develop pitching better. Yo landed a nice package. With Wily in year 3, we should be pondering if we can extend him for 5 years or should consider trading him next year. Fiers is developing into a nice starter. Given that we probably have him under control for 4 more years, we should try to sell him after 2015 or 2016. Still, I'd like to see us play .600+ ball in May and start to climb back into this. The A's and Rays never really rebuild. They just re-tool.
