  1. If Gomez would take the Bill Hall deal (4 years $24 million), I'd strongly consider it. Considering he just made $1.96 million in 2012, he may be apt to take it. $6 million/year is a risk but I think Gomez might be worth the risk even if he is at his peak right now.
  2. Stout: I wouldn't worry yet. In 2008 I pulled a fast one on a friend who is a staunch Republican by signing him up for Barack Obama's email list. It is so simple to do and untraceable.
  3. Not to rehash the Hardy-Gomez deal but I honestly believe this is what the Brewers did by selling low on Hardy. We just paid in a player rather than in a contract and dollars. More to the point though, I think if Gomez replicates 2012 in 2013 he most likely will be gone. Which is unfortunate on so many levels on the field (speed & defense specifically) but also because he is very enjoyable to watch because of the max effort he gives all the time. He quickly became one of my favorite Brewers.
  4. That clip is ridiculous. How strong do you have to be to do that? Additionally, this was in a time when the bats didn't shatter like they do now. Wow that is impressive.
  5. Batting .192 in the three playoff series before this year isn't exactly "solid." I agree with you Burnzy. I never got the clutch feeling with Prince. Maybe the numbers speak differently but I always felt underwhelmed by Prince's "clutchiness." It may also have something to do with Ryan Braun always seemingly getting enormous and memorable hits though (wild card clinching HR against the Cubs in 2008, division clinching HR against Miami in 2011).
  6. All this leads me back to what we think of the current Brewers logo. Not talking of anything other than the hat logo, not the uniforms or secondary logos, just the hat logo. The M with the barley...is this our identity for the next 10-20 years? Do we eventually see a full time return to the MB glove? My opinion...if we haven't returned to the ball and glove full time by now we never will. I just don't have a burning passion for the M with the barley. It's fine enough but aesthetically, I like the ball and glove and the original Brewers/Braves block M better than the M with barley.
  7. Yeah Melvin never does that. Well as long as you don't count Leskanic, Sexson, Young, Franklin, Kolb, Ginter, Overbay, Davis, Gross, and ,you know, Greinke. Option C is for a GOOD, young pitcher. Let's rehash here: - Leskanic traded for Obermueller - Young traded for Greg Bruso - Franklin traded for Carlos Villanueva - Kolb traded for Jose Capellan - Ginter traded for Justin Lehr - Overbay traded for Dave Bush & Zack Jackson - Davis traded for Claudio Vargas & Greg Aquino - Gross traded for Josh Butler Looks like a lot of GOOD young pitchers there doesn't it.
  8. http://blog.chron.com/ultimateastros/2012/10/27/another-piece-of-the-astros-new-image-is-released-early/ Back to the future with their "new" logo. Seems like the trend now is to go retro with a small tweak here and there, like the Blue Jays did prior to 2012. I like the logo.
  9. A-ROD: 274 ABs 72 Hits .263 AVG 13 HR 41 RBI 75 k 39 BB http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/rodrial01.shtml#batting_postseason::none PRINCE: 104 ABs 19 Hits .183 AVG 5 HR 11 RBI 25 K 11 BB http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/f/fieldpr01.shtml#batting_postseason::none A-Rod has been much better and gets a whole bunch of criticism whereas Fielder doesn’t get much criticism. Fair or not? Maybe its based solely on the fact Prince has played in Milwaukee and Detroit and not New York, but this was definitely an interesting piece of information.
  10. In your scenario Monty, I am going with option D and it being a James Shields-like player. When have we ever seen Melvin go with Option C in any trade? Hardy for Gomez is the only one that comes to mind initially.
  11. Let's say Gomez goes out in 2013 and replicates his 2012 slash of .260/.310/.770 and with the 150+ more PAs goes for something like 25 HRs, 65 RBI & 40 SB. What kind of contract would you be willing to give him? Would you go 5 years $35 or $40 million? I know we have Schafer but I love Gomez and I think the budget is there to pay him if he proves to be the player he was towards the end of 2012. It will be an interesting decision given Hart and Gomez both reaching FA at the same and Aoki's team option after 2013.
  12. Yeah I may have overshot what the Giants would be asking for but I think it would be something close to this given the likely interest level from many teams in Lincecum and his ability to turn it around after one bad season. I was by no means advocating us doing that trade, only stating that I believe this is what the Giants would/will likely ask for.
  13. Any interest? I have gone back and forth in my own mind about whether or not I would want the Brewers to pursue him if the Giants were to put him on the trade market after the World Series. On one hand you have a $22 million obligation for 2013 to a guy with a 5+ ERA in 2012. On the other hand, you have a guy who is only going to be 29 next June who has 2 Cy Youngs under his belt already. Pairing a Tim Lincecum with a Yovani Gallardo would definitely be worthwhile experiment in 2013 if I am Doug Melvin but what would the cost of doing so be? I would imagine it would start with whatever 2 pitchers the Giants deemed to be the cream of the Brewers crop (Peralta & Jungmann) along with a top 2 Brewer hitter (Morris). Then would come the task of re-signing Lincecum once 2013 is over, which certainly could be prohibitive if he returns to his pre-2012 form. It appears this would be a pipe dream unless Melvin truly wanted to gamble his GM life away and trade those prospects for Lincecum and give him a 6 year $120 million extension prior to 2013. Honestly, I think this is the type of move we are going to see this offseason. Not necessarily Lincecum but a trade of some young talent (Peralta or Rogers) + a hitting prospect for a #2 to pair with Gallardo at the top of the rotation and fill the #3-5 with Fiers, Estrada & whoever doesn't get traded of Peralta/Rogers. Who that #2 is I am not sure but I am expecting this for this offseason.
  14. Good bye Ozzie. Talk about the getting rid of the garbage. That whole situation in Miami is a an absolute mess. On a side note, with the Brewers having $ to spend this offseason I have to wonder about Reyes. 5 years and $96 million left on his contract. Since they are in full on rebuild mode do you think they move that contract with the right offer? Not sure we have the need with Segura or would want him given the salary but a 1-8 of Reyes, Aoki, Braun, Ramirez, Hart, Weeks, Lucroy, Gomez sure sounds special.
  15. Sheer boredom has me looking up random things and this one has me hating the DH more today than I did yesterday: In 16 MLB seasons (1832 games), David Ortiz has only played 257 games in the field at 1B. That's an average 16 games per year in the field or 14% of his total MLB games. http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/o/ortizda01.shtml
  16. I think people over play the 'pitching and defense' thing with SF. They actually hit really well. The Giants play in a park that suppresses offense. If you look at NL teams regular season batting on the road, SF has the most runs scored, the best BA, best OBP, and the best OPS. That's a good offensive team. They aren't a big HR team. But HRs doesn't always equate to good hitting. In SF, the Giants outhit their opponents in almost every major category - runs scored, OPS, BA, SLG, OPS. The only thing they trail in is HRs. Teams hit to a tune of .649 OPS in SF. This doesn't mean they don't have a top notch pitching staff, but I think people seriously underestimate the Giants hitters. http://www.baseball-reference.com/postseason/2012_NLCS.shtml#post_batting_winner::none I agree with you Reilly. They definitely had a good hitting year in the Regular Season. In the playoffs though, they have had some amazingly timely hitting. As a team in the NLDS against the Reds, they hit .194 and won. In the NLCS, the Giants had 3 of the 8 regulars (Scutaro, Sandoval & Belt) have really good series (.500, .310 & .304 respectively). The other 5 hit .242 and lower, with their #4 & #5 hitters (Posey and Pence) hitting .154 & .179. They just find a way to win. I know if I was a Cardinals fan, I'd be looking at our lineup and theirs and wonder how we scored 6, 7 & 8 in 3 of the first 4 games and 1 run in the final 3.
  17. Thanks for the feedback Hitman. It doesn't necessarily need to be personalized, it is more the size issue for me. I would prefer to buy the authentic but do not fit the size 40 authentic. Medium replicas run large on me as well. When you say it isn't really worth it, do you mean the replica jersey itself isn't worth it or having it personalized isn't worth it? If it is the former, then I would be more apt to just not buy a jersey period. If it is the latter, since it is my only option to have a jersey that would fit, I would tolerate it because they apparently don't make 38 authentics.
  18. I don't want to fill out the bottom of the jersey only!
  19. http://shop.mlb.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3462690&cp=1452356.1452800.1667865 Anyone buy a personalized replica jersey from MLB.com? If so what has your experience been with the jersey? Are you satisfied with the quality and the name and number on the back of the jersey? Obviously, it isn't the authentic jersey but I am too slightly built (need a 38) to fit into the smallest size (40) they sell for the authentic jersey. Any feedback would help.
  20. The one that happened in the playoffs, over a week after the MVP votes were made? Yes I understand that...My point was that personally I was on the fence until watching that game. Besides, what did Ryan Braun say last year? My team made the playoffs and Matt Kemp's didn't. Yes Posey is the MVP.
  21. Offensively, Hamilton/Gamel would likely outperform Hart/Gomez but man I want no part of Hamilton as our everyday CF, meaning he would move to RF and I really don't want Aoki in CF everyday. I think the D would suffer enormously in this scenario but that's just my opinion. This is one of those decisions that hopefully will be taken out of our hands by some team willing to spend big dollars on Hamilton.
  22. Livan Hernandez: 36.1 IP, 7.68 ERA, 1.43 WHIP Bring back Soup!!
  23. Dodgers aren't making an offer. Where do they play him? Kemp CF (8 years) and Ethier RF (5 years) just re-signed last season and they traded for Crawford LF (5 years) and Gonzalez 1B (5 years). If that lineup ever returned to form, they could be formidable: 1. Crawford 2. Hanley 3. Gonzalez 4. Kemp 5. Ethier Dodgers will make a play on Greinke though. Pairing that lineup with a top of the rotation of Kershaw & Greinke would look good.
  24. I didn't mean to imply Brewers-Twins was a forced rivalry. I think it is as a good natural rivalry as Cardinals-Royals given the proximity of the two teams and also with other sports having Wisconsin-Minnesota rivalries such as the Packers-Vikings & Badgers-Gophers. The quirk I thought was awesome was the 4 game series, with 2 at home and 2 away. The forced rivalries I listed were the ones I would prefer to see rotated as I don't see anything redeeming about the Pirates-Tigers playing annually or the Braves-Blue Jays.
  25. I have no problem rooting for the Tigers or Giants and to some extent the Yankees. Tigers have an exciting team with arguably the best hitter and best pitcher in baseball, as well as Prince. Can't stand Valverde but whatever. I'd like to see Prince get a World Series. The Giants play a forgotten form of baseball. Pitching and defense with timely hitting. It's fun to watch them. As much as I love Braun, Posey is the MVP. That HR against Cincinnati clinched that. Even the Yankees have players I enjoy rooting for while not rooting for their team to win. Granderson seems like one of the games true good guys. My hate for the Cardinals was actually starting to wane with Matheny in for LaRussa but after last night's Holliday slide and hearing Mike Shannon and John Rooney on the radio defend the slide I remember why I despise them so. Anyone but the Cards!
