  1. Really says something about our team when the major market Mets are signing Brewer castoffs. I can't wait for the day when the Yankees and Red Sox are doing the same.
  2. I think Bush was seriously underappreciated by a majority of the fans. He put up some very decent numbers in 2008 was on the way to doing so in 2009 if not for Hanley Ramirez. Save for a few outings in 2010 he was a decent #4 and a good #5. Personally, I wouldn't have mind seeing him compete with Narveson for the #5 spot in the rotation.
  3. I agree with this 100%. I am the biggest Weeks supporter and will continue to worry about him being a longterm Brewer until the day he is extended. HOWEVER, if Weeks would've been resigned in August instead of Hart, couldn't the same be argued about Weeks only having 1/2 year of good AND healthy production?
  4. Agreed but hindsight is 20/20. If I would've told you in August when we extended Hart that we would not only have Greinke and Marcum by December but have to worry about extending them, I think you would've rightfully laughed at me. I know I would've laughed at myself if I made that statement. Extending Hart to a pretty decent deal for the Brewers (assuming he maintains something close to last season's production) was the smart move at the time.
  5. I think 88 wins + 3 wins is where I currently see this team. I think 90 wins guarantees this division this year, with the winner likely in the 87-89 range. I think us the Reds and Cards beat up on each other a lot this season ensuring no one really runs away with the division.
  6. The only way we would be that many games back is if we have a few injuries. I think the most likely scenario in 2011 is we are a mid 80 win team with little chance to make the playoffs but to good to be trading guys away. Really? As currently constituted you think we have "little chance to make the playoffs"? I think at worst we are co-favorites for the division right now with the Reds. At worst.
  7. I'm not too proud to say I was choking back some tears at work after watching the CBS interview when he discussed showing his 90 year old mom "he did it" i.e. picking himself up after falling into some dark times. Great story.
  8. I'd gladly take a chance on this guy. As mentioned earlier, he wouldn't provide the same D as Gomez but his bat does seem to be substantially better. At least the man can draw a walk and carry a respectable OBP. He might even be a candidate for the #2 spot in the lineup. Let me put this another way. If Milledge and Gomez were both free agents, who would you rather the Crew sign? I would take Milledge.
  9. This is the most important statement in this entire thread. Yes we may have a lean year or two, but I believe in Attanasio and I truly believe he feels a sense of responsibility to the state of Wisconsin and more specifically the city of Milwaukee to make the Brewers competitive every year. We may not be World Series competitors in 2013 or 2014, but as long as Attanasio is in Milwaukee I believe the definition of our lean years will be 75-80 wins which I can live with if 2011 and 2012 are playoff seasons.
  10. I think this should be the priority of the Brewers. I like a superstar pitching twosome of Greinke/Gallardo and probable superstar hitting twosome of Weeks/Braun much better than a three headed monster of Greinke/Gallardo/Marcum and Braun as the only superstar bat. Where would Brauns's lineup protection come from then? Hart or McGehee? Neither of them have the potential to be what Weeks can be in my opinion.
  11. If we don't extend Weeks after 2011 and Marcum and/or Greinke after 2012, there could be some awfully lean years while we wait for all these high draft picks to develop. I seriously doubt this is the long term vision Attanasio has for this team. Attanasio has stated in the past that he owes it to the fans to put a competitive team in Miller Park year in and year out. Allowing these three to leave via FA doesn't accomplish these goals.
  12. Cappy - Thanks for all the memories in the Brewer uniform. Your preseverance in the face of long odds is refreshing in a sporting environment where entitlement and laziness often appear to be the norm. I wish you the best in the future and know that you are always welcome to come back to the Brewers in the eyes of the fans. Thanks.
  13. Assuming interest in Fuentes is truly post-Saito signing, I think this would be Melvin's angle. As we are currently situated in both the Majors and Minors, I don't see what would be left to make a deal for an impact SS or CF at the deadline without creating a different hole in our everyday lineup by trading a Rickie, Prince or McGehee.
  14. http://www.stadiumstyle.com/eCart/catalog/Braunaltshirt.jpg I found this shirt on Stadiumstyle.com and they haven't had my size for months. I sent them an email to determine where else I could find one of these shirts and they haven't responded. Googling efforts to find this shirt have turned up nothing either. Does anybody have idea where I can find this shirt or something close to it? It doesn't need to be Ryan Braun but I want this Milwaukee script on a cream shirt like this or on a gray shirt. This is my favorite Milwaukee script on any Brewer uniform and have been dying to get this but the only shirts with this are light blue which I am not a fan of. Any clues?
  15. If Jones were offered for Axford I'd have to think Doug Melvin wouldn't let Andy McPhail hang up the phone before the deal was finalized. Saito becomes the closer with Braddock waiting in the wings.
  16. Sounds a lot like the debacle that is the McCourts here in Los Angeles. Talk about a joke of an ownership group. I am guessing a lot of the inner workings of their ineptitude never reaches Milwaukee but they are so terribly mismanaged. Nepotism runs freely and their reign in L.A. almost makes the Selig-Prieb era look competent. Thank God for Attanasio. My big fear is when the Dodgers inevitably go up for sale that he will strongly considers purchasing them as they are right in his backyard. And as much as I would love Mark Cuban and his seemingly limitless $$$ as our owner, I sure appreciate the way Attanasio tries his hardest (i.e. spends the money) to ensure the smallest market in baseball has a payroll in the range of a larger mid-market. For our sake I hope the Cubs never realize the potential they have to put together a Yankee-esque dynasty on the Northside. Despite the fact that we all hate them, that potential does exist for them to become the NL equivalent of the Yankees. If I were them, I would follow the Yankees blueprint: start a Cubs network, build a "new" Wrigley to match the old one and watch the cash roll in. While they don't have the obvious championship pedigree of the Yankees, their "fanbase" is similar to the Yankees in that they are enormous number of Cub fans throughout the country as opposed to the small markets such as the Pirates, Royals and Indians who are truly regional teams with only a smattering of fans spread around the country.
  17. In spite of what Haudricourt has said and emailed to me on the subject, money talks. If the Brewers were to trade for JJ at midseason and offered him a deal after this season paying him handsomely, I bet that bridge could be rebuilt. Even if the Brewers simply tried to sign him as a FA after next season, I'd imagine bygones could be bygones.
  18. Precisely. Even if Axford were to implode and not end up being the long term solution in the back end, this is not likely to be a season where Braddock would be allowed on the job training. In a year where expectations will be high, a proven commodity such as Saito is a must ala Salomon Torres in 2008.
  19. I am all for this. I think we all have stories of watching Branyan parking a few to some of the deepest parts of Miller Park. Like JonnyLungs and dadofandrew said, if Gamel is destined for everday action in the Minors, who else could better fit the role we were going to sign Hinske for than Branyan? This Brewer generation's Rob Deer!
  20. My god mothership, you and I are on the same wavelength. I was terrified of the Cards signing him and Duncan working his voodoo on him and watching him regain his Cy Young form.
  21. I think 75-80 wins max. I like their young players (DeWitt, Colvin, Castro, Soto) but I don't see any of them being the superstar caliber being able to cover the inevitable decline of the older players on their team (Soriano, Fukudome, Ramirez, Byrd, Pena). The rotation is mediocre with only 1 reliable + pitcher in Dempster. Zambrano is still a head case and Wells is an enigma. If all the breaks went their way I could see them winning 84 tops or if all the breaks went against them I could see them losing 90. I think a more realistic scenario has them around 76 wins.
  22. Maybe it's just me but I don't see a team offering Capuano a guaranteed rotatiom spot. Not after two Tommy Johns and only two months worth of starts after two years out. We need to remember that Cappy isn't the Brandon Webb type or even the Chris Young type of reclamation project. Cappy was excellent in 2005 and 2006 but come Opening Day those are 5 and 6 seasons ago. I like Capuano immensely and would love to see him back to battle Narveson as the #5. I think those are the opportunities he will be relegated to for this offseason, battling for a rotation spot.
  23. I sent an email to Haudrciourt asking about JJ's willingness to come back to Milwaukee based on how he was treated over the last months of his time here (being sent down to delay free agency a year). His 6 word response: "Don't look for that to happen" Dang it...5 minute depression setting in.
  24. Agreed but I don't think Melvin would not take the opportunity to make the team better in the long run if the opportunity presented itself. In fact I am not sure we get worse if that deal with Baltimore was to be completed. You have to ask yourself are we better with: 1B Fielder, SS Betancourt, CF Gomez or 1B Gamel, SS Hardy, CF Jones The 1B production likely drops significantly. However, I think our offense and defense at SS vastly improves and our offense significantly improves at CF and defense is likely a push. I know it won't but man I would be psyched if this happened.
  25. I think Baltimore needs a power bat like Fielder way more than Jones or Hardy. Plus I think they are looking to make that splash in FA to compliment their other bats and would have the money to extend Fielder if the deal were to be made. I proposed earlier in this thread a 72 hour window to extend Fielder and I think Boras would be a fool to pass up the opportunity to extend Fielder. They offered Teixeira a 8yr/$160MM and would, in my opinion, offer Fielder the same. Plus they don't lose any of their young pitching Look at their lineup with and without Fielder: With Fielder 2B Roberts LF Pie RF Markakis DH Fielder 3B Reynolds C Wieters 1B Scott CF Gomez SS Izturis Without Fielder 2B Roberts LF Pie RF Markakis CF Jones 3B Reynolds C Wieters 1B Scott DH Unknown SS Hardy They are infinitely better with Fielder. They have thump now with Reynolds, but they are very very interesting with Fielder and I think are a borderline contender once their young pitching comes around. This is a good deal for both sides in my opinion.
