  1. Please call Baltimore right now Mr. Southpaw and offer this. I have been bouncing this idea in my head for weeks.
  2. Absolutely...However, I think everyone is starting to recognize that it's not just the Yankees anymore. Now that the Phillies are also engaging in such ridiculous contracts it just furthers the disparities between big and small markets in general. Rather than MLB execs giving us the same tired reasons of the Yankees being the only team who has a payroll outside of the stratosphere, the Red Sox and Phillies are now closing the gap giving the big markets a broad advantage over the small and medium markets. This is bad short term for small markets but good long term for the need for a change.
  3. I saw Wood play in an A game in Rancho Cucamonga in 2005. This year he hit .321, 43 HR, 115 RBI. Dude was amazing. Somthing to the tune of 4-5 2 HRs and a triple. Best game I have ever seen a minor leaguer have. Just phenomenal. I went to probably 5 or 6 Angel games last season. He started all of them and had 1 hit. Unfortunately, the dude just can't hit major league pitching. He has had many, MANY opportunities to grab 3B and claim it as his own. Classic AAAA player. I may take a flyer on him but wouldn't give up much. Probably not even Parra.
  4. Sign me up now for this out of Lucroy! As long as he isn't a black hole in the #6 spot, and by black hole I mean a .230/.280/.340 line or the like, I'll be happy with his production. I want to see a solid defensive season out of him. That's the most important thing. I'm still hopeful for a Gomez line that reads something like this...
  5. Right now, Casey McGehee is the new Brady Clark without the skills slipping.
  6. This is the thinking that drives me crazy about prospects. I am a HUGE Gamel guy and honestly wouldn't mind Fielder still being traded (only because we know he won't be here in 2012) before this season to fill CF or SS holes and just giving Gamel 1B. However, I can't give him a position at the expense of someone who is signed long term AND is producing. It's like trading JJ or Vina. Those deals drove me crazy because those guys were productive big leaguers who were still signed long term but were dealt for the "potential" of Escobar and Ronnie Belliard. Yes, Escobar still could turn into something amazing but that's not the point. I'm not saying never give a prospect a shot. But when they are blocked by productive players who are signed long term, I don't see the benefit of doing so.
  7. All good points. The most important thing to realize here is that Cliff Lee or his equivalent FA pitcher were not interested in coming to Milwaukee. It became awfully apparent towards the end of negotiations that he wanted Philly pretty badly and was willing to take less years and money to do so. In order to entice Lee to not go to Philly we'd have likely had to go north of the 7 year $148MM the Yanks offered. I know this is a what-if scenario and scenario #1 looks better for us longterm but like you said, it relies on the assumption Lee would have come to Milwaukee, which I don't think was going to occur. Because of this the Brewers operated in the reality of what they could do and did the absolute best they could do. And who's to say Greinke would turn down that 5Yr/$120MM contract you would've given Lee? Yes we still are out of the prospects, but we also would be giving the 5 year deal to Greinke at age 29, 3 years younger than Lee would be when the deal would go into effect.
  8. It really hasn't been 2 seasons. It is only a little over 1 and a half. I understand why nobody agrees with my opinion but like I said, McGehee was not much of a hitter in the minors and suddenly he hits way better. I don't expect it to continue. Halfway through 2011 I may change my mind. Not to pick on you but I disagree completely and the stats disagree as well. In fact it appears Casey's stats have gradually risen as he has risen through the minors and on into the majors. If he falls off a cliff, I'll eat my words but come on..."not much of a hitter in the minors" is blatant bias.
  9. The realities of our system are awfully depressing if we can't resign our current big leaguers or if injuries strike. Also, I disagree about us having a 1 or 2 year window. To me this implies we are going to fall off the map after 2012 and back into a 90 loss team. I don't see that happening even in the worst case scenario. Not with Attanasio as the owner.
  10. I think that is uncalled for. I am just basing my opinion on different assumptions and biases than you are. You are assuming McGehee will continue to hit as well as he has so far. I am not so certain he will. Gamel in 2009 had a .760ish OPS in sporadic at bats. I think given regular playing he will improve on that number pretty easily based on his minor league numbers. Given that neither is a good defender I don't think that really comes into play much. I also think Gamel's left handed bat would slot pretty nicely into the 2 hole given his decent OBP skills. I agree with you here Logan. Once Prince is gone after 2011, I feel this is the best place for Gamel due to his ability to draw a walk (18 in 148 PAs in 2008). I would love to slot Gamel #2, Weeks #3, Braun #4, McGehee #5, Hart #6, Lucroy #7. That just leaves the Brewers to find a SS or CF who can leadoff. What I don't understand is the expectation for McGehee to all of a sudden fall off the map and be a bench player. I mean he has only hit .291 with and OBP+ of 120, while averaging 20 HRs since he has been with usI agree with Robbo that it seems like just because he wasn't our farm hand he is destined to fail and we should move him. I'm not saying he's untouchable but to bench him for Gamel would be ludicrious. He's not expensive, he can't be a FA until after 2014 and most importantly, he has produced. Why get rid of him?
  11. Taking Fielder and Wolf off the books could allow us to extend guys like Weeks, Greinke and Marcum. If Wolf has a nice 2011 I think he could net us a decent replacement at SS for 2012, yes.Words right out of my mouth FIB. Fielder is going to make what, $15MM in arbitration(?) and Wolf is getting $9.5MM in 2012. Gives you $25MM of salary relief which should easily cover Weeks and Marcum per year and leave the rest to give to Greinke to begin his boost from $13.5MM.
  12. I'd prefer Cruz over Betancourt right now. But man it would be hard for me to have such unlikeable players at both CF and SS; Gomez because of his 3-run HR staredown when we were losing 15-0 in Minnesota last year and Cruz who claimed Macha was a racist.
  13. I'll guess about 84 for the Cards. I like the first 3 SP but hate their OF D. Rasmus situation could linger. I just get the 2008 Cardinals feeling about them in that they will be competitive and finish above .500 but will be consistently 5 games off the division lead. I'll say 86 for the Reds. I am not sold on their SP outside of Cueto and Volquez. I don't trust Arroyo or Bailey. They have some questions in their lineup too in my opinion. Rolen could be in line for a fall off as he'll be 36 in April and Janish is not a very good SS. I do like Bruce and Stubbs quite a lot though. My rose colored glasses say the Brewers have a little bit more in the rotation and the lineup than the Reds do. Hence my December prediction of: Brewers 88-74 Reds 86-76 Cards 84-78
  14. If we deal Gamel we then create another hole next year when Prince is gone. Our organizational depth has taken a severe hit with the deals for CC, Marcum and Greinke. Gamel will stay unless he is part of a bigger package that fills multiple hole. As for the free agents, I would love to see Reyes in Milwaukee. He is one of my favorite players to watch. I doubt we can afford to sign him though if we are focused on resigning Weeks, Marcum and Greinke. He's already making $11MM this season and I can see someone giving him a 4yr/$60MM deal which is waaaaaaaaaay more than we should consider. Rollins is more of an option if he could be had on a 4yr/$32MM deal but he will also be 33 on Opening Day 2012. It looks like slim pickings.
  15. I think most of us are assuming that Betancourt will be gone after 2011. If so who plays SS in 2012? We don't have a prospect ready, so that means a trade or free agent. Who's going to be available?
  16. Huh? Greinke interview link in the "Greinke trade" thread
  17. Since 2002 the NL Central winners have won 97, 88, 105, 100, 83, 85, 97, 91, and 91 games.(93 average) The Wild Card winners have won 95, 91, 92, 89, 88, 90, 90, 92, and 91 games.(90.9 average) If we are at 88 that probably puts in the thick of things and makes us the leaders if things break our way. I have mentioned it in a couple of the SS threads and others have touched on it in this thread but each win over 88 greatly improves our chances. I know there is a stigma about the low level of competition in the NL Central but the winners have still typically won at least 90 games.Even though I predicted 91 earlier, I could very well see a division winner this season at about 88 wins. There isn't a huge difference in the Central between us, the Cardinals and Reds. Additionally, I still think the Cubs and Astros are high 70 to 80 win teams and the Pirates will be improved as well. All things considered, the division should be close all year.
  18. Which I would be ok with because I think way too many people overestimate the nostalgia related to the "glory days" and the ball and glove. Most people I know don't care about the glory years and how it's related to that logo. It's just a timeless good logo that people prefer to the new one. They aren't saying the new one is bad, but it fails in comparison to the ball and glove. Count me in this camp. And by the way, why the hate for the royal blue and yellow? I love that scheme. The blue and yellow were unique to the Brewers in MLB. I hate the shimmery gold on the current set. Reminds me of when Ron Wolf contemplated changing the Packers yellow to actual gold. Best idea ever to not change the yellow to gold. EDIT: Didn't mean to switch up the avatar on you Brewcrew...just thought it ironic to post with my comment above. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/laugh.gif
  19. If the Angels sign Beltre to play 3B they will be set in their IF with Kendrick at 2B and Morales/Napoli at 1B. That leaves SS where only one of Aybar and Izturis can start. With Roenicke's background with the Angels, I wonder if he has any insight as to whether either would be a fit to play SS in Milwaukee. I would love to see Aybar, as he would provide a top of the lineup hitter to get on in front of Braun and Fielder, but I'm not sure we'd matchup or have the ammo to get this done. If they signed Beltre they'd have no need for McGehee or Gamel and I don't want to open another hole for 2012 when Fielder goes. I don't think they need an OF or a LHP RP specialist like Stetter. Here's a thought: would they bite on a Parra for Aybar deal in the hopes Parra could turn his "stuff" into something useful? I would do that in a heartbeat.
  20. Seriously, was just listening to the radio out here in rainy Southern California and they were just talking about how the Angels have had the worst offseason in MLB and how they need a power bat and mentioned Fielder specifically. I come in and "Braun" to the Angels is the headline. I felt like Zack Greinke when he found out Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston broke up...
  21. I for one think this will be easier than most. Everything I read says Greinke wants to win and a town like Milwaukee seems to fit his personality better than a major market. Because of this I think we'd be apt to give the CC/Fielder contract to Zack if thats what it took to keep him in Milwaukee. I may be wrong but I don't think I am. Hope springs eternal though right?
  22. JJ for Yuniesky straight up... In all seriousness, I wonder if Melvin would consider bringing JJ back if the Orioles made him available (I know they just acquired him) or if that bridge was too badly burned.
  23. This was the doom and gloom quote I was referring too. Even if we have Braun, Weeks, Hart, Gallardo, Marcum and Axford plus McGehee, Gamel, Lucroy we still have 6 solid hitters and 2 higher end starters, assuming everyone stays on their current career path. That should be enough to be at least a .500 team and not a team that MAY be within spitting distance of .500. That's doom and gloom to me.
  24. Summed up perfectly. I think this is the likliest of scenarios. My guess: 1. Weeks raises the AVG a bit while sacrificing some power (.275, 25 HR) 2. Hart drops off a little. Back to his 2008 levels (.280, 25 HR, 85 RBI) 3. Braun will be Braun (.310, 30 HR, 110 RBI) 4. Fielder in a contract year (.290, 45 HR, 120 RBI) 5. McGehee drops off a bit (.280, 17 HR, 80 RBI) 6 & 7. Gomez and Lucroy are the keys to me. Bring good D and a .260-.270ish average and we'll call it good. 8. Betancourt is impossible for me to project. I expect him to be the new Suppan aka Scream at the TV guy 1. Greinke 2.85 ERA 2. Gallardo 3.40 ERA 3. Marcum 3.70 ERA 4. Wolf 4.00 ERA 5. Narveson 4.60 ERA Bullpen does it's job. Axford proves to be a reliable closer All this goes to plan and I truly believe this is the most likely scenario, this is a 91 win team. Best Brewers team I can remember going into a season so I give them a one win bump over the 2008 team.
  25. Yet another idea whose time has come. If the current players hate the pinstripes and the financials don't add up to change uniforms, at least bring back the ball and glove in navy and gold and designate it as the home or away cap.
