  1. Yeah, sometimes things are taken too far... Depends who we are choosing him over. There are going to be more than a couple quality options still on FA market when March rolls around.
  2. The "Today's Game" (ballot consisting of players from 1988 to today) special committee is just a horrible idea. Anybody from the "Today's game" era who is remotely qualified for the HOF is still on the actual BBWAA election ballot, or was just recently pushed off that ballot. Pretty much every player on the "Modern Baseball (1970-1988)" ballot from 2018 was a more worthy selection than any player on the "Today's Game" ballot from this year. There will be another horrible ballot and likely selection in 2 years and another one two year after that. This year's "Today's Game" ballot: Lee Smith Harold Baines Lou Piniella Albert Belle Joe Carter Will Clark Orel Hershiser Davey Johnson Charlie Manuel George Steinbrenner Last year's "Modern baseball" ballot: Jack Morris Alan Trammell Steve Garvey Tommy John Don Mattingly Dale Murphy Dave Parker Luis Tiant Ted Simmons Marvin Miller
  3. I think there is a week long time period or something like that where the acquiring team can decide what to do with him (trade him, waive him or put him on the 40 man). If the Mets 40 man roster was full, that would give them time to trade or waive somebody else to make room for the acquired player. Nice to get something for Keon. It would take simultaneous multiple 2+ month long DL type stints among our top 4 OFs to actually miss Keon this year. Even then, the youngsters might be just as good. We have plenty of guys to fill in on a week-to-week basis.
  4. 2.57 ERA and 1.215 WHIP points to a TOR-type to me. TOR types come four ways: 1. You have a home-grown talent who simply dominates via his stuff. 2. You trade for somebody who simply dominates via his stuff. 3. You sign somebody who simply dominates via his stuff as a free agent. 4. You are able to take a pitcher, and maybe make a tweak or two (throw pitch B more often or fix a mindset), and take his performance up to higher levels than before. Miley was a TOR starter acquired the fourth way. ... Miley was a guy who was almost out of the league and transformed back into a mid-rotation starter. Freddy Peralta is the type of guy that goes from okay to TOR by adding/improving a pitch
  5. If everybody is healthy to start out the year, I think he'll be in AAA. The odds of everybody being healthy to start the year aren't super high. Also, this is assuming Thames is still around. If he gets moved, Gamel will make the roster--unless another LH bat is picked up along the way. Thames hit .223 with a .313 OBP vs RHP last year with a lot of strikeouts, and defense & baserunning that are significantly worse than Gamel's. He'll also be 32 years old in 2019. I suppose it is possible that they value Thames more than Gamel as a corner outfielder because of his power, but that would really surprise me. If everybody is still healthy come mid-May or so and Thames is scuffling, I could see them cutting Thames and bringing up Gamel. They've got 6 or 7 million reasons to give Thames a chance though (even if that reasoning is flawed).

  7. Everybody who thought this was a "good fit" and thus a good trade thinks that way. So no, you aren't the only one.
  8. Still too early. If April comes around and this is the roster, then we can complain. Then--if Stearns does nothing-- June will come around and we can all see who was signed for how much and what kind of production they provided and we can evaluate then. (Hopefully we make another add before April)
  9. I've defended Braun's baseball skills on here plenty as well, but I agree that the combination of Braun, Santana, and Broxton obviously could not happen going into next year. Remember that the Rays had to downright release Corey Dickerson last offseason. Getting Gamel+ for Santana is a good deal for this team. We could not afford to have Santana repeat his 2018 while on a (hopefully) contending team.
  10. It's different in that he costs next to nothing and we still have plenty of opportunity to make a better move. Solarte will very likely cost next-to-next-to-nothing. There are a lot of aspects that go into a signing like this though other than a quick look at their stats and the slight difference in cash. As an internet armchair GM I still don't like it.
  11. Yep. Not much to add here. Spangenberg is barely serviceable against righties, but drops to historically bad levels when facing lefties. Sub-Uecker line, sub .500 OPS type of production the last couple of years against southpaws. I sure hope this is a depth move rather than a "plan A" move.
  12. Yep. That's why we definitely shouldn't overpay right now. Be patient. We might be able to get exactly who we want for significantly cheaper than traditional "market value."
  13. Part of making it work will be flexibility. Having a lot of arms and a lot of guys with options is necessary for it to work, and most teams don't have that, but it looks like the Brewers will in 2019. I don't think there is going to be a set pattern. At least I hope not. I still think that game situations and who is rested will still play the largest part in pitching changes. I'd hope that there are times when the Brewers are up by 5 and the IOG is looking great and humming along, and they just let him keep humming until he gives up a run/gets in serious trouble rather than taking him out in the 4th or 5th inning just because that is what the "plan" was if it was a close game or if he didnt look great. What worries me is that no matter how successful their innovations are most of the time, there will be a week at some point where we lose 2 or 3 games in row because of an odd rotation strategy. If we keep it up after a random blip like that will be the true test of how committed we are to the strategy--particularly if that bad stretch happens in April.
  14. This thread has interesting potential to be bumped in 2025. More likely-- Claudio is okay, the pick is forgotten and this thread is forgotten.
  15. "Cheapest serviceable option" is kind of a negative way to put it. It's more that the guys we'd spend more on are not highly likely to significantly outperform the cheaper guy. That's where I'm at, anyway. As I said, if the FO sees it differently and targets a guy they are confident in, great--I hope they go sign him and he does even better than expected.
  16. If I had billions, I'd give a billion to put a stadium in Central Park Manhattan and have the Rays move there. Brooklyn and North Jersey should have a park/MLB team too. If anybody has an argument how that wouldn't be great for the MLB and every baseball fan in America and New York especially, I'd like to hear it.
  17. With the depth of the FA pool and our lack of need for a long term solution, I fully expect us to sit this one out until March at the earliest, and then snag somebody for a cheap 1 year deal. Normally, I'd find this weak, but I really don't have a strong preference between LeMahieu, Murphy, Dozier, Kinsler, Gonzalez, Lowrie, Cabrera-- heck, even a Walker, Harrison, Flores, Descalso, or Dietrich would be serviceable and have some sort of upside. I'm sure that one of these guys is going to have a great year next year, and if the front office is confident they know which one, by all means I hope they target them and offer them a decent contract. If not, wait it out.
  18. I'd be fine with a not-old quality versatile 2B on a multi-year deal. Like Marwin Gonzalez. Not sure if anybody else fits the bill.
  19. 3 years of Corey Knebel isn't on the block either, but I bet we could get Bogaerts+ for him. I like Corey, but I would guess his trade value right now is higher than his actual value.
  20. Red Sox said Xander Bogaerts might be available on his last arby year this year. I have no idea what the Sox would be looking for, but bullpen help would probably be a decent guess. Three years of arby controlled Corey Knebel for Bogaerts, Darwinzon Hernandez and Durbin Feltman?
  21. I'd think that Machado might be a better investment than Kimbrel--but neither one is a value we can take on compared to what we could get for 1/2-1/8 the price.
  22. I'd take him for cheap, but I'd guess that he goes to one of the coasts. Perhaps if we offer a couple mil it would persuade him to come here rather than SoCal or the NE.
  23. Yangervis Solarte is a name I haven't seen mentioned around here. Switch hitting utility infielder coming off a bad year for the Blue Jays. I don't know what his D is like. If he is a solid fielder he could be a decent cheap option to pick up and look for a bounce back year. Marwin Gonzalez lite.
  24. I might be willing to give up Woodruff/Burnes/Peralta if the Marlins would throw in a younger version(s) of those guys in return. A Braxton Garrett, Trevor Rodgers or Edward Cabrera, perhaps. Not sure I'd flip Hiura to get Isan Diaz back, but maybe Diaz+. There are always creative ways to make deals work.
  25. Murphy would fit perfectly into Thames' role when Hiura comes up - he'd be the LH 1b option / backup 2B / pH. That's why the may be looking to sign him for two seasons. It would just be tough to roster both him and Thames this year. Two lefties who are very limited defensively--and while Murphy traditionally hits lefties okay I'm guessing that won't be the case anymore in the twilight of his career (as evidenced by his numbers last year). Throw in Aguilar and Braun and Santana from the right side and that's a lot of very limited players. Too many for my liking.
