  1. I think our pitching staff is "better" than our regulars, but that doesn't mean I think B is a better option than A. There is always a C. We have a lot of talented players. If there are FAs out there who are undervalued or at value, we will pursue them whether they are hitters (a la Lo Cain) or pitchers (a la Chacin and Miley). Same for a trade.
  2. This Red Sox team is being floated as the greatest team ever. If they are not that, they are one of them. That roster has no flaws. The Astros were being discussed as a dynasty after Game 2 of the ALCS, and they never won again. I've already decided the silver lining is that the Brewers may now make it in a different year when the matchup is more even. And somehow, Steve Pearce is their #3 hitter.
  3. Could you pair up Hader with Freddy Peralta and get 7 innings out of them every 4 days?
  4. I like Melvin. Mainly because I was at Busch stadium in May of 2009, waiting in line to get a hot dog at a regular concession stand. I turned around to see a mustachioed Canadian waiting in line behind me. I complimented him on picking up Trevor Hoffman, and he just kinda shrugs back at me and says "so far, so good." True story.
  5. ALSO: I would love to hear what the old school poster with the Darth Maul Avatar who wrote essay after essay on this site (mostly correct essays) thinks about our future. Somebody should be able to remind me of his user name... (I assume he was a "he"...HA)
  6. I think that the candidates we currently have to become an "Ace" are likely better than anything we could conceivably acquire at a fair market value. i could be wrong, and if I am I trust that Stearns and Co. will find the right guy to fill that role.
  7. You are simply wrong. A runner on 2nd with no outs vs a runner on 3rd with 1 out is a 4% increase in a chance to score a single run. The odds with a runner on 1st vs runner on 2nd are similar. So you have to be successful with the bunt over 90% of the time for it to be a valid strategy. It is extremely rare for this to be the case. Bunting in the current game of baseball is a huge mistake unless you have a pitcher up or an elite bunter up. One has to account for the reality of the self-fulfilling prophecy. In playoff baseball, every run matters, so every little tiny thing to get one run or to prevent one run from scoring makes a HUGE difference. Over the course of the regular season that just isn't the case--primarily because one both faces average pitching and one has to put average pitching on the mound FAR more often, so playing for a big inning makes more sense (like putting on the "contact play") A team simply cannot focus so singularly on every little thing during the regular season because they will burn out...and that is part of what makes baseball the greatest game in eternity. To be more specific about bunting and the "self-fulfilling prophecy"--well, the more one de-emphasizes bunting (and other small ball skills), the more they become a poorer strategy, since the players playing in the game will not have been working on those types of skills. Which is fine, in the regular season.... But in playoff baseball, every run matters....
  8. Be careful. The Dodgers have a catcher who can hit, and he was almost our NLCS MVP despite only playing half the time... if only he played more! (Also, check out last years playoff playing time for Mr. Grandal)
  9. As great as the 2018 Brewers Optimism Thread is and was, I look forward to turning the page to the 2019 Optimism Thread!
  10. Ask me about Schoop in 2 weeks (well, maybe tomorrow depending on DH options vs. the Red Sox). Or at least discuss his future in the Transactions Forum. Tonight, Schoop might send us to the World Series.
  11. Gotta go with JJ for Turner and Machado anyway. If they turn it over to Hader for the rest that should be fine, then everybody would be available tomorrow anyway, although the big three would be used...
  12. I actually like it a lot. I mean, you still have to be able to use him. Using him early means you still have Hader in your back pocket if Jeffress struggles. Yeah. With a 3 run lead you let JJ go here and hope to add on. Saving Hader would be HUGE. Might go 4 tomorrow if he is hot and is needed.
  13. After the "no collision"/Posey rule, there isn't really a reason to slide into home. Smoltz was all over Dozier/Muncy for his running through home, but why not?
  14. I don't particularly appreciate Smoltz and Verducci notso subtly imply-ing shenanigans about the Brewers knowing what's coming from the mound.
  15. Lol, don't know why I even had to verify that this was by the guy with the Conan The Barbarian sig. MOAR Herodotus!
  16. Kershaw pitched around Braun twice, once he took the walk once the other time he chased. Good to see him be patient here.
  17. I'm kind of surprised the Braun vs. Dodgers storyline hasn't been brought up yet. I haven't wanted to bring it up because I'm not a huge fan of dramatic storylines, but this seems like a late enough time to mention it. He wants to beat the Dodgers bad.
  18. He has a great changeup. Tails away from righties and towards lefties...the same reason that most conventional splits occur as most breaking balls break away from like-handed hitters.
