  1. It is kind of silly that there isn't any restaurant/bar/hotel/retail development within easy walking distance of MP.
  2. I have no problems with Pina at all. I want 2 good catchers on the team so they can split time and keep each other fresh and not lose a beat for DL stints/rests when a guy is dinged up. Ideally, one would be a lefty to make PH appearances easier and use their splits to our advantage when they split time, but that's not really necessary.
  3. Quite frankly, I hope it's the Cubs. They can absorb a lot of payroll disasters but this one could actually hurt. I agree. The guy is obviously a well above average player, but on the whole he isn't nearly the first ballot HOF type that he is portrayed as.
  4. There used to be a phrase "paralysis by analysis." Not en vogue these days. Especially on the internet.
  5. Maybe I'm wrong but I think hitting coaches help fix mechanics or change the type of swing somewhat but strike zone judgement is more on the player than the coach. I just can't see many coaches teaching them to swing at garbage. Kinda depends on the age of the player. A young guy may have not seen enough different types of pitches/ spins/ arm angles/ etc. so he is more easily fooled by big league pitching. Teaching a young player to recognize how he is being fooled is a pretty big aspect of being a hitting coach. On this team that basically means that Arcia is the only guy really still "coachable" in a true teaching sense--and perhaps Aguilar. I would prefer that a good teacher like that would be at Wisconsin or Carolina rather than the big league club--but again, minor league pitching might not actually be good enough to consistently fool batters based on a scouting report as most pitchers are working on their own stuff rather than worrying about the scouting report of the hitter.
  6. I wouldn't sign Ramos for 3/36M tomorrow. 2/20 would be my offer. Come March one of those might look better for one side or the other.
  7. His OPS+ has been under 100 for three of the last five years - 91 in 2014, 66 in 2015, and 97 in 2017. He also missed time with an ACL injury. Those pose some risks. If the Crew goes free agent, bringing back Lucroy at 3 years, $9 million makes more sense. Perhaps the return to Milwaukee will make him regain his stroke, the way it did for Jeff Cirillo. Huh? A solid defensive catcher with an OPS+ more than 90 for 4 of the last 5 years sounds pretty solid as long as you don't break the bank for him. Especially if the upside is 120+ OPS.
  8. If they roll with Thames, Anderson and Schoop, they have no room for a significant add. If they move those guys, they could make a splash with a pretty big signing. I'll guess they go somewhere in between. The bad part about moving Thames and Schoop is that those guys actually fill a needed role on the team, so I doubt they get moved.
  9. I was very negative about this possibility, but what is the risk? I assume we have to at least eat some sort of financial cost if we pick a guy and then send him back to his original club in May? Are there any other consequences?
  10. I think most would include Attanasio as the most frontest part of the term "front office," but Attanasio is not the baseball expert. Stearns and co. are the baseball experts. If they told Attanasio it wouldn't be a wise decision to give DJ the raise he wanted, then he's not going to go against that. There might be something here or there might be nothing here. Maybe Stearns and Co. have a list of guys who they actually think could do a better job than DJ.
  11. The front office clearly feels that they themselves were/are much more of an influence on how well the Brewers pitched as a staff than DJ was. I sure hope they are right.
  12. It's too hard to vote without knowing the cost of the FAs/trade. I don't think Realmuto will be worth the prospects it will take to get him and we pretty much jettisoned all of our available type of prospect depth at the last trade deadline, so I'd prefer to bolster the position through either FA or the waiver wire/scrapheap type trade not involving any top 20 prospect types. I'm assuming that Ramos will be cheaper than Grandal. He's older and is a bit injury plagued which should make his price rather reasonable. Offer him a 2/22M year deal with a 3rd and perhaps 4th year vesting options with player opt outs. 800 PAs or 200 GS at C. Something like that. Anything more than that and we are asking for trouble. If the front office has targeted some other younger guys who they like for cheap that would be fine too, but I think I at least want to bring in some competition for the current crew.
  13. I would think that they have a pretty flexible ceiling for their payroll right now. They won't spend money just to spend money but if something comes along where they can improve the roster at a decent value without crippling the future I'd have to think it wouldn't be a problem. Where that point is between a short term decent value and a mid-term to long-term overspend might be a little murky I suppose.
  14. Since pretty much all of our initial outgetters have options remaining, we could be in for quite a year of transactions in 2019. And if we employ that kind of a strategy we probably need most of the rest of our pitchers to have options as well. Bad news for Lyles, Cedeno and Jennings--and it would be nice if Houser gets one back this year.
  15. Huh? Or you go to arbitration, then continually look for better options throughout the offseason via FA or a trade. If one comes along that is a better deal than Schoop (allowing for the 1.5 M buyout in March), great! If one doesn't come along there is no reason to force it or take a bad value because you have Schoop for his arby value.
  16. What possible incentive would the Tigers have for that deal? They're not getting younger, they're not saving money. They're just replacing one player with different players. Thames has no trade value, agreed. The other guys could provide value both next year and beyond, unlike Castellanos. Castellanos wouldn't even be an everyday player for us--he'd be a soft platoon for Shaw at 3rd, split time with Braun and Aguilar and spell Yelich a couple times a month. He provides no value for the Tigers after next year and I don't think they are going to compete for anything meaningful so he seems like a likely guy they'd look to move. He destroys lefties
  17. What would it take to get Nicholas Castellanos? On his last arby year next year. Thames, Santana/Broxton and Anderson/Davies? I'd want to try to get some younger prospects out of them too, perhaps Isaac Paredes and Wenceel Perez if we include Ray or Erceg?
  18. -Sign Wilson Ramos and Marwin Gonzalez -Trade away some veterans and replenish the minor league system (Thames/Santana/Schoop/Broxton, Anderson/Davies/Nelson/Guerra) -Make a few Chacin/Miley type signings mostly for the pen. None of them worked last year, but keep bringing in talented relievers and hope to catch lightning in a bottle (Andrew Miller? Cody Allen? Kelvin Herrera? Soria? Britton? Robertson? Ryu? Morton? Sabathia? Happ? One or two of those guys and a few other flyers) -Fill in other holes depending on who was traded away.
  19. Really? That doesn't seem right to me...but I'm no expert.
  20. Kinda. Nobody is getting a long term contract from that group...or even a 3 year contract outside of perhaps 2 or 3 names. I think it makes sense to budget 10-12 million each year to bring in 2-5 veteran bullpen arms in Spring Training and hope to catch lightning in a bottle from one or two of them. Obviously it depends on what kind of AAAA depth/quality that you've got lurking around.
  21. Yeah. With the way we use our bullpen and having a 92+ win team there is no way we'd want a mediocre bullpen arm that we are forced to keep on the 25 man roster all year.
  22. Yeah. If they don't keep Schoop, they will need to find another guy basically just like Schoop. They aren't going to get anybody better, and with Soria and Moose leaving via FA we should be able to afford him just fine. You might be able to pick up a more consistent guy who puts together good ABs and has a higher OBP...but probably not. And if you did do that, Schoop could turn around hit 40 bombs next year with a .290/.340/.550 line for somebody else.
  23. Tell me about Q Torres-Costa and how he will be rostered next season. If he is placed on the 60 day DL he will not use up a 40 man roster spot nor will he use an option, but he will accrue an entire year of MLB service time. Alternatively, they could burn an option year and keep him in the MilB DL where he would not accrue any service time but would take up a spot on the 40 man roster. Is this correct, and what are the Brewers likely to do? Also: When is the Rule 5 draft? Is that also the first important deadline for these types of 40 man roster decisions? EDIT: I see the tiny print above is being discussed in the Minor League forum. I should have checked there first.
  24. LOL at the speculation here about Dan Wright. I know absolutely 0 about the situation, but it's kind of hilarious to think that it is performance related--and how or why the internet would or should care about whether it is or or isn't. There are so many variables involved that it is just...I can't even... Was the head custodian at Miller Park retained?!?
  25. Any discussion about modern stats should start with the origin of ANY statistics. One could always ignore ALL statistics and just watch every postseason game for the last 30 years or so, ignoring even something as simple as batting avg.--then try to judge who the best players are. A scout's dream...
