  1. I'd prefer for the 4th starter and the 8th guy in the bullpen to be the same guy. If neither Burnes nor Woodruff are going to start, it seems very unlikely that one of those two won't be available in the 10th+ inning to go for 3-4 innings if necessary. At that point, even if you burn the #4 starter and he needs to go another 3-4 innings, you'd still have whoever of Burnes/Woodruff who only went for an inning early in the game to make the "start" for game 4--as well as pushing up Miley on 3 days rest for a couple innings since he'll probably only go 4-5 innings in game 1. Then there is an off day before game 5 which should re-set the rest of the bullpen as well as give the starter for game 2 and 5 the normal 4 days rest. Having Burnes, Woodruff, a #4 starter who is unavailable out of the BP AND having another long relief guy who will only pitch in an extra inning emergency role seems excessive to me in the division series. The only way I see it being a real problem would be if games 3 and 4 both went 13+ innings. It seems far more probable that having the option of using a 14th position player (Broxton, Thames, Perez, etc.) would be more beneficial.
  2. I think I'd leave Cishek in and walk Yelich to load the bases for Braun if I were Maddon.
  3. Is there a name for leading the league in those 4 categories? Has it ever happened before?
  4. I don't know anymore. I've always wanted big time SP in the past and had never liked veteran "depth" type signings, but my barometer is completely off after the years that Chacin and Miley have had this year. We are going to have a lot of arms no matter what, and for probably the first time in my life as a Brewer fan I completely trust that the organization will end up doing the right thing to win both now AND for the future. It'll be a fun year.
  5. It would be nice to keep at least 2/3 of Broxton, Santana, or Thames. I don't think Jennings makes it--particularly if we use Miley and Gonzalez as bullpen "starters." If they are only going to pitch twice through the order on days they start, there is no reason at least one of them wouldn't be available to use as a LOOGY on those days they aren't scheduled to "start." This is especially the case for the NLDS where you won't have 3 games in a row. I think 11 pitchers is sufficient for that series. Almost all of those 11 guys can go multiple innings too.
  6. That's true for each individual player, but the opposite is true for the team. Depth allows for Counsel to maximize his matchup advantages as much as possible so that rarely does a guy have to play in a situation that would likely harm his output/WAR. The whole is greater than the sum of the parts. The point is not to have the highest WAR for the 25 man playoff roster-- the point is to win the game that day.
  7. The depth of this team is crazy. It is unfortunate that we need to officially leave guys off the playoff roster. Count me in for a rule change that allows only 25 guys to be used any particular day but nobody knows who those guys are until they are actually used. Actually, it's kind of a silly 20th century notion altogether. Expand the rosters and eliminate the DH--or at least ONLY allow the DH for the starting pitcher. Cy Young caliber stud starters will still be stud starters, yet it allows for all sorts of strategic moves a la the NL game and allows more guys on the bench with special skills to meaningfully contribute to the MLB squad. The players union should like this, the owners should like this, and the fans should like this. Everybody wins.
  8. If voters only had one vote for one person, maybe. But seeing as the votes are ranked (1-10 I think) it shouldn't make a difference. Baez and Yelich will be 1 and 2 on almost every ballot. The wild card is going to be how many voters put deGrom 1 or 2 and which of Baez or Yelich they put at 3. I would vote Yelich for League MVP and Cain for team MVP, however odd that sounds...
  9. I don't know what Braun's WAR is this year, but I guarantee you that if you take every other guy in the league within 1.0 WAR of whatever that number is and put that guy on the Brewers instead of Braun we are not even sniffing the division title this year.
  10. Notso much a planned happening--more of a vintage happening. There are so many happenings of Uecker calling the game in his natural radio habitat that the TV stage leaves a bit of a schtickiness that is slightly sickening in it's affectation even if it is not unwelcomed.
  11. Wednesday night is a good night.
  12. Curtis Leskanic * Franklin Stubbs is somehow a beautifully apt picture(s) for this type of clincher... Now when this team ascends beyond this milquetoast mildstone...
  13. That’s freaking awesome I luvit, but a part of me is skeptically squinting at the almost choreographed "nature" of it all...
  14. I do love me some obvious statistical advantage due to modern tech/statcAST, but a larger part of me hopes that Harold Reynolds is still waving that traditional flag 35+years from now, holding onto traditional "positions" like SS or CF even while the numbers clearly say to move all 8 guys around into positions where the batter is more likely to hit into the defenders skillz...
  15. Herodotus wrote that Persian king Xerxes once had the sea whipped when it destroyed a bridge his engineers had built. I say after all the rain problems they’ve had in big road games this year, the Crew should bring in cannons to launch shells at the sky. Kudos. We need more Herodotus and Thucydides in our IGTs.
  16. Whatever you call it, with the day off tomorrow and the expanded September roster, I think Counsel should manage this game as if it is an elimination game.
  17. I agree. They look very comfortable up there, knowing exactly what they are doing. Also, why wouldn't we roll with 11 pitchers in the Playoffs? There are so many off days I'd much rather have a ton of flexibility on the bench. Other than Cain and Yelich (and Aguilar if he heats up), the rest of the roster is very match-up dependent.
  18. Let me guess, they think that high ball 4 to Braun was a strike. Regardless, BB to load the bases, BB to tie the game in the 8th, then BB, HBP, HBP, FC FTL in the 9th is a baaad way to lose. If that is their bullpen plan for the stretch run, this is going to be a fun September.
