  1. Because it's just a dozen small samples strung back-to-back since the beginning of last year http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif.
  2. Verlander through 5 against KC. That's at least 14 straight no-hit innings, not sure about the start before that.
  3. They are better because of a higher slugging pct. though, which is mitigated somewhat when batting leadoff, and taken advantage of more in the 5th and 6th spots behind the high OBP of Fielder and Weeks.
  4. I know radical changes won't happen, but I think it's fun to speculate anyway: LuCroy Braun Fielder Weeks Hart McGehee Betancourt Pitcher Gomez I really think that this would be the optimal lineup. LuCroy is a high OBP, mediocre power/speed guy, so just get him on base in front of Braun/Fielder/Weeks. Bat the low OBP, high speed guy Gomez ninth right in front of LuCroy, where if he gets on he can use his speed to steal/hit and run with the contact hitter up. Give Braun and Fielder more at bats by bumping them up in the order and take advantage of Weeks' power AND speed by moving him to cleanup, not to mention protecting Prince better than McGehee. We have such good hitting pitchers that batting them 8th isn't a big deal especially when compared to Gomez.
  5. Yeah, I tried to defend Kotsay, but I'd rather see Carlos out there too. Especially when you factor in the entertainment value http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif. Though I certainly wouldn't get all up in arms about the decision unless it becomes a habit--which doesn't look likely since CarGo is back in there tonight against the righty. If we had great defensive corner OFers the situation might be different, but this team desperately needs Carlos' glove out there.
  6. So, basically you are saying that there isn't enough data, and there likely won't be enough data (both of these things I totally agree with) to make a sound decision based upon accurate historical statistical evidence. On what then are you basing your criticism of the Roenicke's decision? It must be on the flawed aggregate historical data vs right handed pitchers: Gomez career vs righties: .248/.296/.346/.642 in 1066 plate appearances. Kotsay's career vs righties (his last four years look very similar to these numbers in ~1000 PAs): .280/.339/.415/.754 in 5000+ plate appearances. So, purely by the numbers Kotsay is substantially better. Add in the scouting experience of our coaching staff who have dedicated their life to training their eyeballs to learn when they have a matchup they like and it looks even better. Again, we aren't comparing Kotsay to the mythical average player or the nameless replacement player, we have to compare Kotsay to the other option on our roster. I'm not sure if that gap in production combined with scouting reports is enough to offset the defensive liability of Kotsay, but I'm not sure how you can say this decision "isn't even close."
  7. As always in these silly debates, it's about matchups vs. sabermatricians. Roenicke thinks that the difference between Kotsay and Gomez' hitting prowess VS TIM STAUFFER (not vs some average MLB pitcher..not even vs. the average right handed pitcher, but likely based on hours of observing both players hit against guys of his ilk--junkballing command-centric right handers) brings a greater advantage to the team to win the current game than the difference between Gomez and Kotsay's defense. In this case, I don't think there is much of a difference between the two options. Another thing to keep in mind is the human element behind all of this. We have no idea what is going on behind the scenes. Perhaps RR has been harping on Gomez about some aspect of his game whether it is preperation, warm-ups, batting cage work, coming late to a meeting, etc. etc. etc. and has been warning him that he will see the bench if he isn't up to snuff in one of these areas. He's a young guy who is obviously still maturing, so this seems like it could be the case. It's one game. His other starts recently were for Hart who looked terrible coming of an entire off-season layoff, so giving him a couple days rest seems to make sense too.
  8. The Brewers' next 16 games look like this: 3 vs PIT 2 @ LA 2 @ SD 3 vs COL 3 vs WAS 3 vs SF It would be very nice to go at least 10-6 to head into Cincinnati for a critical three game series being only a game under .500 at 26-27. I think this is an optimistic yet realistic expectation with 12 games at home. Does anybody know how the game next Thursday AT San Diego is a night game? This is absurd. Not only do they NOT get a travel day the following day, but it is their longest (distance wise) road trip of the year in a time zone two hours behind where they play their game the next day. The game will end close to midnight Milwaukee time, which puts them on a plane sometime around 1:30ish for a 5 hour flight. Then they get to play a game that day, their 8th in a row amidst 13 days without an off day. Is this just a complete oversight by MLB?
  9. There is no way the Angels trade Trout. 7 years of cheap Trout for 1/2 season of slightly below market Fielder? Not going to happen. What about Izturis/Aybar plus Morales/Trumbo for Fielder? This would both improve the team for this year as well as next year. I don't know anything about those guys' defense, but it has to be better than the Betancourt/Fielder como, plus they bring other skills to the table as well.
  10. In an odd way, it is satisfying that on a night where the Brewers offense really breaks through they actually need the runs. I know it doesn't work that way, but it's really annoying to win 8-1 one day and then lose 2-1 the next day.
  11. Has there been any other pitcher more similar to Greg Maddux than Shaun Marcum?
  12. Which near no-hitter was that? There's been a few of them in the past week...
  13. Nothing is in a vacuum, so it's really impossible to say "if we are 3 games under .500 at the all-star break, we are sellers." As mothership stated, it depends what is on the trade table, but it also depends on the rest of the teams in the division and league. We could be under .500 but less than 5 games out of first and only a couple game out from the wild-card. Who knows at this point.
  14. That was the greatest amount of tact I've ever heard Greinke use in an interview. I could just see the gears grinding in his head after the reporter asked him about Yuni's defense. It took A LOT for him not to blurt out the truth about Yuni's lack of range, instead focusing on what great hands he his (which is true). Commendable, yet not quite as entertaining as the truth. Sigh.
  15. BUMP. Wow. Rickie helped out a bit with the bare hand on the DP, but that was a heck of a play by Betancourt too. No matter what the WAR stats say, Yuni's defense may have won two games for the Brewers this year (Philly, and that DP there if the Crew can hold on) ----- Continued from: viewtopic.php?p=676307#p676307 Original Lead: viewtopic.php?t=24574
  16. Love it. Greinke tells Roenicke to sit down, then tells Hawpe to sit down. I'd let him start the 7th till somebody gets on. I don't think the bottom of the Pads order will jack one on him to tie it. PH if he gets up this inning, of course.
  17. Greinke isn't messing around. His first pitch has been right down the middle almost every batter. Not sure why SD isn't up there hacking.
  18. He seems to dive at the base and then slide over it. While it's certainly not textbook, and it is dangerous if he slides all the way over, it is actually the fastest way to get to the base. More conventional slides are a split second slower since the runner decelerates the last 5 feet or so before making contact with the base. Carlos dives at the base and decelerates after touching the bag. As long as he is able to keep his back foot on the bag every time it seems like a good technique. On that triple there he went feet first though and slid late. He usually doesn't go feet first so it was pretty awkward.
  19. Well, if Greinke does that 8 more times he'll have a pretty good line. 9 IP 18 Ks 0 H 0 R 90 P, 72 S 18 B
  20. Marcum doesn't seem to want or need much attention and he has done just fine without your help, so I'd go with Corey tomorrow.
  21. I think Marcum is a safer bet to stay consistent. His peak value isn't as high as Greinke's though. Thus, I'd rather have Marcum for the regular season and I'd rather have Greinke for the playoffs. Can we work something like that out?
  22. Narveson with the 4 strike K on Holliday, very nearly 5.
  23. Heck of a swing on that one by gomez--although that is the type of hit that causes him to swing at pitches he shouldn't.
