  1. Iowa may end up with more negative yard plays than positive yard plays today.
  2. Good showing. This team looks to be better than projected, but about where they should be...i.e. barring injury they will be in the tournament. I doubt they compete for a B1G title, but I've said that for at least a half dozen other UW teams in the last 20 years who ended up at least competing for a title if not winning it (see: '19-'20 and '21-'22...among others....)
  3. As soon as the layout of the court was shown upon AmFamClam, this whole Brew City battle was destined to be a dud. Had they done the common sense thing and placed the center court line perpendicular to one of the dugouts so that at least half of the stadium had a decent view of the game rather than none of the stadium (other than a few hundred seats rolled in...which they still could have done had they placed the court correctly) then this could have at least become an interesting novelty that would draw the normal 15K. Instead they can't give away tickets. ALSO: Bring in UWM and Marquette and make it a triple header...or GB as well and have an interstate tourney. As it is, it's just another game, and one that is better viewed on TV.
  4. no. 2 mil guaranteed and if he is STILL good you get him cheap another year. The buyout this year (.75) plus 1.5 plus .5 equals 2.75 guaranteed. So you are saving 250K with the added benefit of possibly getting him another year for cheap (1.5)
  5. Well, I'm 0 for 2 on options. Box has been as consistently good as anyone not closing games the last 2 years out of the bullpen. He's experienced and steady, which are nice things to have back there. I'd offer him a deal for $1.5M with another $1.5M team option yr with $500K buyout.
  6. Meh. The BEST case scenario here is that we get something back in a trade or Wong bounces back and merely fulfills his value. The downside is a crash and burn year where he is old and ineffective or hurt, etc--and frankly that seems more likely to me. I'd rather have used Wong's salary+McCutcheon's salary to actually get one above average player rather than spending $8-12M each for guys who neither move the needle nor even really have any chance at breaking out and outperforming their contract. If Wong were the last piece of an already loaded lineup, sure, then you take his defense and plug the last hole. We need to roll the dice a bit and try for something bigger/riskier with higher upside.
  7. Johnny was just as hot and cold. He was not very efficient and didn't really get his shots within the flow of the offense so the other 4 guys were just standing around and watching Johnny, or waiting for him to be the man rather than running their stuff and looking for good shots for anybody. That's what was "stifling." But he was mostly clutch-particularly in the first 2/3 of the season.
  8. You aren't wrong MrTP, and I too look forward to a more balanced team that takes good shots. Johnny single handedly won enough games last year where it just kinda stifled the overall offensive development since it was hard to argue against Johnny doing whatever he wanted.
  9. I've been confident thinking about this upcoming season, but suddenly am worried they'll lose to South Dakota tonight. I blame the Brewers, Packers, and Badger football for my pessimism.
  10. It's bad when you lose to a team that in the grand scheme of things doesn't even really WANT to win. Pretty sure the Lions GM would've been very happy with a "moral" victory but an actual loss...
  11. Yeah, there are quite a few top 150 type '24 recruits UW is targeting who seem to be fairly high on UW. Only need a couple of them to commit to have a nice class.
  12. Mertz has always been physically talented, and has always been beyond great in everything that is off the field.. Previous to this year he had shown nothing beyond his arm talent to believe that he is even a decent college QB on the field. However, that has all changed--except for a couple errant throws this year (namely the INT to MSUs DB on that out route last weekend). His pocket presence this year is exponentially better than years past. He has mostly made the correct reads and put the ball where it should be--and occasionally has stepped up in the pocket, evaded the rush and found open receivers--even on 3rd and long. Watch the games. There are couple of miscues where bad decisions and/or bad execution occurs, but there are for more instances where the situation looks bleak and GM at least makes on opportunity out of very little...which is the opposite of his MO the past coupla years.
  13. Do you mean Jon Scheyer?
  14. We've been tagging on to last years thread for awhile, but it's clearly time for a fresh new post-Johnny iteration of UW basketball. A solid core of Chucky, Wahl and Crowl should keep the floor relatively high for this crew. Essegian and Klesmit seem like they could really step into an outside gunner type of role, which this team really needs. Hodges or Ilver or Gilmore need to step up to at least be defensively competent and not turnover machines in order to give Crowl a little rest and protect him from foul trouble. It should be fun as always. I'd be more surprised if they missed the Tournament than if they won the conference, but there are way too many unknowns on both this team and throughout the B1G to really say anything with any sort of confidence. I found it odd that The Athletic picked them 9th in the league, but also were the only team with 2 guys picked on the 2 deep preseason all-conference team (Chucky and Wahl). Of course neither were on the 1st team, but still. They were picked 10th last year and finished 1st in a theoretically MUCH tougher league. Let the games begin.
  15. LOL @yankees/dodgers/(whoever) for their pathetic attempt at fielding a competitive bullpen... clearly they just don't want to win and have greedy owners who only care for profits rather than wins and championships...I'd say more but it's time to sleep,,,
  16. It's literally raining in San Diego
  17. Yeah, USC will be more like Michigan and Penn State than OSU...so adding them will only make it even less likely that UW plays OSU. UCLA might be good every few years but on the whole they are closer to Nebraska's level than our level.
  18. LOL. GrEAt idea! Fire the reigning B1G champion/coach of the year...
  19. Awonder is currently tied for second place with 3.0/5. Still 7 rounds left after today.
  20. Huh. Good work. If only we could use the internet to judge and place people in real life, ascribing a value to their being so as to root out the freeloaders and underachievers in everyday businesses...(this is a JO?KE, people,,.)
  21. Conversely, on the women's side 12 year old Alice Lee was a charming interview after her game (that she won). She clearly elucidated certain positions and options and what she was worried about and why she played certain plays....even at times admitting she completely missed certain lines when the analyst showed them to her.
  22. In Hans' first match at the US Chess Championships he smoked Christopher Yoo with black. He refused to take questions or analyze his game at all after the match, just saying "The chess speaks for itself. Such a beautiful game. The chess speaks for itself." Then walked off the set.
