  1. Wow, for your sake I hope you are kidding. Not kidding at all. I will not watch a single game this weekend. Now I’m off to have a couple of glasses of Scotch and listen to an archived MLB game with Vin Scully on the call.* *also not kidding. You should post more often.
  2. Doubt it not much changed he was still the same player and I doubt teams changed their valuation of him all that much. That was a strange offseason. Corey Dickerson got straight up released. He was going into his 2nd arby year so he was making substantially more money, but obviously the market for OFers was severely depressed. I can grant to the detractors of the trade that Santana might be a marginally better player than Gamel--or at least he had/has a higher upside than Gamel. That's why we got Zavolas. Plus Gamel is a better fit for our roster. Good trade overall.
  3. A team can have 2 "active" pitchers, so that one can sit on the bench and rest-however, if you "rest" a guy he has to stay on the bench until the next half inning--and any mid-inning pitching change will permanently remove the pitcher from the game.
  4. This would seriously speed up the game but could screw up a lot of offensive stats as good teams would have fewer offensive innings than bad teams: After the 6th inning, the team in the lead has the option to delay their next innings at bats--letting the trailing team consecutively use the offensive half of its innings until its 9 offensive innings are up (or it ties the game/takes the lead). If the trailing team takes the lead during this time, it shall finish the half inning that it is in and the other team would resume it's offensive at-bats where they left off. It wouldn't have to be an "option" either...You could mandate that a team will not bat unless it is losing or it is winning by fewer runs than the number of innings it has left to bat. So, if a team is up by 6 after 4 innings, it stops batting until the other team scores enough runs to make it a closer game (obviously still clearing the bases after 3 outs), at which point it would pick up again by batting in it's 5th inning (even if the other team is in the 8th inning of it's ABs) Blowouts are really boring for both teams and it is mostly a waste of time for the team that is ahead to bat. The other team would still get it's 27 outs to make a miraculous comeback--and should that happen then the team that was originally ahead by a lot would also still get it's full 9 innings/27 outs to come back again.
  5. Shouldn't we be pinch hitting here? Then bring Houser in for the PHer? It "wastes" a pinch hitter, but there are 2 guys on base.... a hit/homer and Houser can cruise through 115 pitches or so.... Or does the "official" lineup submitted count as being "in the game" even if a team hasn't taken the field yet?
  6. Only the Dodgers walk more. But only the Padres strike out more. No one hits worse with RISP. No one has fewer sacrifice bunts. I really don't want the Brewers bunting more. As contact averse as the Brewers are, there's no way I want them purposely giving away outs just to gain one base. Meh. If one is good at bunting and not slow it seems to me that there is no need to purposely give away an out. With all the shifting it is quite possible to get a single while bunting.
  7. As long as a player has less than one year of MLB service I believe they are eligible.
  8. Kimbrel at 0-2, 5.68 ERA, -0.4 WAR, -0.59 WPA so far & is currently on the DL so some other relievers got to blow it for the Cubs tonight. Just because he has been really good in the past & cost a lot of money doesn't definitely make it a good thing for the Cubs. The Cubs may indeed have a superior lineup, rotation & pen, but their record is only one game better than our's at the moment. ALSO: when high-priced veterans suck (and are under contract for the foreseeable future) it's far more demoralizing than when Travis Shaw or Jesus Aguilar sucks.
  9. Well, September 8th. I agree though that if the schedule is finalized less than 1 year in advance it shouldn't be hard to make likely division favorites face each other at least once in the last couple of weeks of the season.
  10. In a change from previous years, the 2019 AFL begins soon after the MiLB season ends--running from Sept. 18th to October 26th. The Brewers will send 7 players to play for the Glendale Desert Dogs. Who will they be? Corey Ray participated in the league a couple of years ago, can he go again this fall? Ethan Small pitched 100 innings for MSU this past Spring, then barely competed in Minor League games until the past couple of weeks...is he a candidate?
  11. I'd have to think that Gamel's roster spot is pretty safe next year as veteran OF depth with an option. He'll still be cheap next year and can start out in AAA. Perhaps the organization does him a favor by trading him to a team with MLB OF needs, but he will still have value next year for the Brewers. Taylor, Stokes and Ray have taken steps back this year being unable to hit in AAA--it would be hard to trust them as our 5th/6th OF depth option in front of a proven guy like Gamel.
  12. When you say "people" and "this board" I think you just mean PinaMadness
  13. I understand how Gold Gloves are influenced by offense, but this is a BA survey of scouts, managers, and FO personnel. The numbers say he is a great framer... and... adequate at everything else. Obviously the Dodgers didn't think he was a great defensive player when he was repeeatedly benched in the playoffs, and I don't think too many Brewer fans would say they'd rather have him behind the plate than Pina. Oh well.
  14. Locks- Woodruff, Davies Near lock- Anderson Swing guys- Houser, Suter, Peralta?, Burnes?, Faria?, Nelson? Young guys- Supak, Brown? File?, Bettinger?, Francis?, Rasmussen?, Belisario?, Jankins? FAs- Lyles, Gonzalez, Chacin, Pomeranz There's a lot of names up there and almost as many question marks. Somebody will be signed, and hopefully it's somebody more significant than Jordan Lyles.
  15. That is a good prospect 365 article. I don't have a problem with more guys hitting home runs when the situation calls for it (which is basically what has happened...There isn't an increase in HRs from the top tier of guys like there was in the steroid era, there is just an increase in 2B, SS, CF, and catchers hitting for power when in the past those were mainly defensive and/or speed guys). However, it does really bug me when there are certain situations where swinging "to do damage" as the article states results in more Ks when simply a single or even just a BIP will likely do the trick (scoring 1 run late to take the lead....getting guys in from 3rd...getting the lead off guy on base, etc.). Still, as Danzig said, shifting is a bigger problem than hitting philosophy, since it's just plain a lot harder to hit singles against the shift. How about just shortening the basepaths to 88 feet? Speedy ground ball guys' average and stolen base attempts/success rates would go way up making them more valuable. You'd have to give pitchers/D a little bit somewhere else though, or else R/game would go up way too much. That's the odd thing about the "problem" in that teams aren't scoring a ton more runs than they used to, they are just doing it a different way that is mostly boring. HRs aren't boring, but BBs are, and Ks with guys on base are boring too.
  16. W is a W. Many more are coming. Prolly not that many against the Dodgers though...
  17. Just for that he's totally going to take the next two weeks off to cover the National Disc Golf Summer Invitational. Have you seen those guys? Incredible skill.
  18. Braun is such a guess hitter these days. When he guesses right, he's good. When not, notso much. That second strike was directly in his wheelhouse, but he thought it was a slider. That last slider he couldn't even come close to holding back on after he guessed wrong. On the whole he is still productive though.
  19. This thought makes me want to throw something in frustration: Why are baseball players being promoted when they are recalled, which means they did well, but contaminated food and cars and stuff is being demoted since being recalled means they were defective? The same thing means the opposite. HOW CAN THIS BE?! Recalled...going back to the caller/where you were. The manufacturer or the MLB roster. Seems straight forward to me. Although I do enjoy strange tangents in the game thread. So thanks for that.
