  1. Oregon's combination of defensive intensity without fouling was excellent. The 2nd half went from "meh" the first 12 minutes to poor for two minutes to bad for 4 minutes to "***" the last 2 minutes. Just a crescendo of nausea to ill to simultaneously puking it up while crapping down their leg. Oregon is a good team and we played about as poorly as possible and it went to OT. Timing wise, now is a good time for a wake-up call. Hopefully everybody takes it to heart and it doesn't happen again.
  2. I thought the batting stance was a good enough clue....and body shape, era, etc.
  3. Just in case you didn't know, there is a tag
  4. Agreed, but there's been some bad streaks early in the game/the first half more than a couple times and then completely cleaned it up in the 2nd half. Recently it's been less of an issue. Not all turnovers are the same, either. Silly travelling calls when receiving the ball going away from the basket are just dumb (Amos and Blackwell yesterday), and then live ball turnovers leading to transition opportunities--usually from lazy passes around the perimeter--are doubly bad. Overall it's not an issue.
  5. They definitely don't walk it up the court anymore. We used to play so hard and so intense on defense that we almost HAD to slow it down and walk it up because we had to catch our breath and rest a little bit. This team is deeper so we can afford to push the ball and rest guys on the bench instead of the first 10-15 seconds of our offensive possession.
  6. I am totally in this camp. In the past there was always this comforting feeling whenever UW had a 10 point lead because of the boa constrictor nature of how they played. When you play slow, don't turn it over and lockdown on D it's just so demoralizing to the other team (for any youngsters who didn't live through the Dick Bennett Final four run in 2000 it is worth a re-watch). When you play fast, a turnover and 2 missed shots *BOOM, a 10 point lead is a tie game 2 minutes later. I realize, this also works in reverse, so I'm getting used to that too (see the quick swing at the end of the 1st half vs. Purdue on Saturday when it seemed like the game might be slipping away after McGee's ejection). Just don't let it turn into undisciplined basketball. Take decent shots, take care of the ball and still play defense and they can play as fast as possible.
  7. 😮 I haven't had a drink since New Years eve, but I'm feeling a little lightheaded. I watched the Maryland B1G tourney game at the Target Center last year with @Playing Catch, and after that one he said that he felt like he ate too much cake. Same vibes now, except kicked up a notch against this kind of "competition". Too many baskets.
  8. This is true...but it's Jake Davis and Ben Humrichous going 4-7 from 3 that are keeping the Illini in the game--along with UWs 8 TOs. If UW rebounds like that though, one can almost tolerate the sloppiness.
  9. While the Purdue game was very easy to predict how the game would be played and what each team wanted to do, this one is a complete mystery. Even with Johnson out the Illini have at least 6 guys who could go for 20+. They could hit their threes, UW could be cold and Illinois would win going away. Or the opposite. Or anything, really.
  10. This is true...but it was totally by design. If you've seen Purdue recently, Cox and Colvin and Heide couldn't hit a shot and Braden Smith has been the second coming of Steve Nash. We sold out to keep Smith contained, basically doubling him AND hedging toward TKR (as unsuccessful as that was...when he got the ball it went in the hoop). If Purdue was going to beat us, we were going to make those guys hit threes, and they did. Good for them. The same thing happened against Maryland, but we couldn't score against Maryland the way we could against Purdue. They had no answers.
  11. What a beautiful, clean game of basketball. THREE TURNOVERS? Seriously? Everybody played well. Shut down Braden Smith. So many MVPs of this one--but I'm going with Jack Frickin Janicki. That rejection of Smith right after Kamari got booted was magnificent. Not that Smith could get any shots off against anybody else, either. Cox hit some threes for them...good for him. TKR got his, but we made it as difficult as possible. Milwaukee is in the cards for the first round, but there is still a lot of basketball left. On Wisconsin.
  12. Wow. What can you say?
  13. Good half all things considered. If it wasn't for 3 plays, it would be a great half: 1. The Tonje turnover when he went baseline led to an immediate wide open transition 3 by Loyer. Can't have live ball turnovers, and for the most part UW avoided them. 2. Blackwell fouling Loyer on the 26 footer. Just terrible. Although it did get UW out of playing that silly zone... 3. Obviously, the stupid call on McGee. Great bounceback after Kamari got kicked...Janicki came up with a couple huge plays. Keep on keeping on in the 2nd half.
  14. As could be said for EVERY game, this one will come down to turnovers, rebounding and fouls. And shooting (lol). Seriously though, it would behoove UW to force Purdue's non-stars to handle the ball and make plays, or at least shots. Easier said than done. If UW takes care of the ball they will get lots of good shots up. Make them. Use our depth...work B Smith on both ends of the floor as much as possible. Run the floor like deer and force the action against Smith and TKR to hopefully draw some fouls against them. I've been preparing for a 10 pt loss all week, and expect that will be the case today....but dang...it sure seems to me that if UW plays well it will be hard for Purdue to keep up.
  15. Great 2nd half. Iowa played really well in the first half and just couldn't keep it up after that. Had UW made a couple shots in the first 5 minutes after the half it would've been easier than it even was. On Wisconsin.
  16. I wonder about Camren Hunter as well. He seems to have been injured all year so I don't think he's ever shown what he is capable of.
  17. Unbelievable first 10 minutes, obviously. There was a lot of stupid the last 10 minutes though.
  18. It's probably a couple weeks too early, but I started looking at seeds and NCAA tournament sites tonight. From East to West, the opening weekend sites are: Providence, Raleigh, Cleveland, Lexington, Milwaukee, Wichita, Denver, and Seattle. Even with Marquette being Milwaukee's host, it doesn't look like UW can be a protected seed in MKE unless they pass 2 of MSU, Purdue or Iowa St. on the seed line. Since the Western US pretty much sucks at basketball it looks like the 4 seeds will occupy the 4 slots in Seattle and Denver. Perhaps Arizona, UCLA or Oregon can really turn it on and go to Seattle preferentially as a 3 seed, but that doesn't seem likely. This predicament is less than ideal, since right now it looks like UW will be a 4 or 5 seed. A 6 seed in MKE, Cleveland or Lexington might be just as good as a 4 seed in Seattle. Hmph. I guess UW will just have to go on a run.
  19. First poorish offensive game since the Michigan game. Maryland didn't play great either other than their secondary pieces just flat out scorching the nets in the 2nd half. UW guarded the paint and rebounded much better than I thought they would, and mostly contained Gillespie as well. Basically we played the way we wanted to on D, making Rice and Miguel and their bench beat us, and beat us they did. The looks were a little TOO open at times, but credit to them for knocking them down.
  20. I have more confidence in Frelick hitting 20 homers this year than I do in these refs in the 2nd half. I don't necessarily this we'll get screwed royally, just that they will be bad.
  21. 100%. The advantage of super bouncy athletic bigs can be mitigated by Winter and/or Crowl hitting a couple of 3s early in the game. Draw them away from the basket and open up cutting/driving lanes....or just have Winter and Crowl keep nailing 3s all game (something that Beilein mentioned after the last game...he wished our bigs would hunt the 3 pt shot a little more). Pretty much 100% of college bigs with those athletic traits are defensive specialists with little skill game and little offensive game outside of receiving the ball under the hoop after their defender helps or getting an offensive rebound and dunking it. If our guards can stay in front of driving perimeter players then our bigs can stay in proper defensive position and it relegates bigs to being screeners. Then again we've struggled guarding bigs off the pick and roll and they often end up hanging on the rim. Wednesday is a huge game. If Maryland plays their best I think we lose unless we hit 20 threes. Fouls will be HUGE of course....on the road I doubt the whistle benefits UW.
  22. Lots and lots and lots of ifs and buts this game. In the end it is a close excusable loss, unlike all the other losses by B1G teams tonight. Hopefully Washington can contribute in that category vs Oregon. Great fight by UW.
  23. He is 100% correct...yet that has been the gripe against Steve for 4 years running now. The guy just doesn't have a quick move to the hoop in his makeup. He'd RATHER get doubled so he can pass, and he does that well. At this point he is what he is, and that is pretty good. Winter, on the other hand, can see a crack and take advantage immediately--as long as he is facing the hoop. If he can keep that mindset AND develop a back to the basket low post game (then develop the passing out of double teams like Happ/Crowl) Winter could be REALLY special.
  24. Great win...had the blip AGAIN in the first 6 minutes of the 2nd half but responded in kind to close it out easily. Is Tonje sick? injured?
  25. Great half...again. Can we avoid the typical let down in defensive intensity in the 2nd half? The offense will basically take care of itself, PARTICULARLY if we avoid TOs.
