  1. Garza is only 31 and he hasn't lost velocity. I think he's actually a pretty good bounce back candidate either 2nd half this year or next year and then he will be more tradable. Right now could well be the lowest point in his value over this contract with 2.5 years left and coming off the worst 100 innings of his career.
  2. Thornburg has been getting shelled all year. They would be crazy to start him.
  3. There is no reason to ever front load a contract as long as there is no salary cap. It's always better for the team to defer the money as long as possible. I would imagine the front loaded contracts that do exist only happened because the player or agent negotiated for it.
  4. I'd rather get guys in the lower minors at this point. Walker is MLB ready and we don't need him this year or next year. I'm sure he'll be a great post season reliever if Seattle makes the playoffs. I really hope we trade Lucroy though. The only reason not to is if we try to rush the rebuild and that would be a mistake with what we have. Arcia and Jimmy Nelson are not going to carry us to the playoffs in 2016-2017 but they could be nice pieces of a 2018 team.
  5. When it comes to value for a pitcher, strike outs are a really important stat. There can be low ERA guys because they have good defense and big ball parks but if a guy is striking out 1 out of 3 hitters every inning then he can probably pitch anywhere. If you go and sort starters by K/9 you'll find all the big contracts and the guys who are about to get big contracts.
  6. Our farm system has been awful. We've been bottom dwellers in farm system rankings for years because we traded guys away and didn't replace them. Even if we had Brantley, Escobar, Odorizzi, Cain it would still be a bad farm system because those guys are MLB players now. We went 3-4 years without acquiring premier talent and 3-4 years without acquiring any talent at all. Any player could say this and I wouldn't blame them for being unhappy about it.
  7. I'm pretty impressed by his knowledge of our crappy farm system and baseball economics honestly
  8. The demand for him in the past wasn't that great. He'll likely be priced by his 2012-2014 years and his numbers at the end of this year will probably look closer to those.
  9. You're right about the sub 3 ERA. He's a different pitcher now though. It's interesting that Texas is asking him to throw a lot more sliders than he did in Milwaukee. He's on pace to throw more than 1000 when his previous career high was 791. They might be treating him like a rent a pitcher and wear his arm out.
  10. Lind was a good get for Estrada. Wasn't particularly impressed by the return they got for Gallardo and thought they didn't coach him well.
  11. With no context it's not a terrible trade because Toussaint is unlikely to be a MLB player anyway, but if I was a Dbacks fan I would be furious that my team was unable to manage their payroll and draft competently. It's not like they're spending the money on the team, the owner is just going to pocket it.
  12. We didn't draft any good players from 2009-2011 and those guys are supposed to be maturing into MLB players right now. Losing the pick for Lohse is hurting our system right now. There are some years in there post 2011 where we really should have traded and added prospects and had early picks but we didn't. It seems like we've had a losing team for 3.5 years now and the only high pick we've had is Kodi.
  13. It would be nice if we had 3 short stops but we have 1 below average SS, 1 utility guy and a prospect on the 2017 track. Hopefully Arcia does well and can push for a 2016 callup but I don't think it's early enough to worry about that. Segura's trade value is probably rising anyway, since he was pretty much worthless last year.
  14. That's nice that he replied back. I don't think it's helpful to spam his email and I like that we have been investing in our MiLB system lately, especially international free agency. I don't think there is much for him to do besides wait it out until Coulter, Arcia and Lara can contribute and then try to make a splash again.
  15. I wasn't a Broxton, big $ to reliever, nor an "8th inning man" fan, but short contracts at high dollars don't bother me. Broxton tanks, he's gone (at a buyout) next year. Those contracts are more "it's Mark's money" to me. Usually the extra money wouldn't have been put to a useful purpose that year. He could be making $100 million himself this year and I wouldn't care, because he's not getting in the way of future building like Braun's might. Broxton is just collecting a paycheck on a team that has no chance, and wouldn't have had a chance even if his 9 million was available to fill up the roster in 2015 with. I thought we were paying Broxton mostly to add him for last year and it wasn't a good deal to opt out in 2015?
  16. Trade Lucroy for Swihart (Boston) and you have your catcher of the now & future as well. That Carlos Leal in our minors is sure intriguing as well. 2017 C- Swihart / Leal 1B- Braun 2B- Sardinas 3B- Prospect from Segura and Gennet trades SS- Arcia Aren't you his agent or something? Why would you pencil in a 33rd round pick with 44 MiLB plate appearances in on the MLB roster?
  17. As long as Lucroy and Gomez are out they are below average offensively, defensively, pitching, base running, everything
  18. I didn't realize that Braun has been a replacement level player for 2 full years and counting. That would be a tough sell. Wouldn't it have been nice if not for the extension and he was a UFA next year after making $12M this year?
  19. The Marlins took a lot of flack when they traded away all of their good players a couple years ago but they had it right. We have to compete in waves, no reason to be upset about it just slash payroll and if we're lucky we can compete 2016 or 2017. Oakland is doing the same thing, Tampa pretty much does the same thing. I'm glad we traded for Greinke, Marcum, Sabathia and others but it's time to give up Gomez and Braun if possible.
  20. Our starting pitching has looked decent except for Lohse and if he can get it together there is no reason to think we won't have 5 solid pitchers all year, which usually leads to a good number of wins
  21. Segura is actually the ideal type of player we would want to trade for at this point if he wasn't already on our roster. Former decent prospect in the middle infield with his value at an all time low, can start for 1-2 years during a rebuild and try to build up his value and if not cut ties without losing much. It's just that we've watched his crappiness for 1.5 years now.
  22. Segura was awful last year and I don't think any win now team will want him. If we're going to trade Segura I think the only thing to do would be swap him for some other underperforming former prospect. Best thing we can probably do at this point is hold for a year and hope his value goes up along with Arcia / Sardinas.
  23. Gomez and Lucroy really hold this team together at this point. As long as those 2 guys are healthy and no fire sale around them we'll be competent.
  24. Lara at 3B in 2018 or 2019 so they can shop for a 35 year old who still has 2-3 years left in FA/trade
  25. Prospects are over valued, veterans are over valued, and signing a guy in his prime to a $25M/year contract is overvalued. Everything is overvalued.
