  1. I'm bouncing my head off my desk right now. I forgot why I always read your username as HiAndUptight. That post cleared that up.... Another of those two pitchers is coming back from Tommy John surgery. If you are referring to Narveson then he had rotator cuff surgery. Not nearly as routine nor predictable of a surgery as Tommy John Surgery. While I understand your point, he might be toast and likely won't be starting next year even if he has some success at recovery. Predicting him starting is a stretch all by itself.
  2. 1) On July 21st Carlos Gomez had an OPS of .688 (fairly close to his career mark). In a little less than 3 weeks he's raised it by ~.100. For April (~4 weeks) he had an OPS of .893 and yet was so unspectacular for May, June and most of July that his OPS was back to career average territory. He is having a hot spell. He has them. 2) I have a great money making idea for Brewerfan. Sell the price of web hosting to posters if they can block topics from being discussed. Depending on the price, I would easily pay the web hosting costs of Brewerfan.net for 3, 6, or 12 months if no topics could be started that discuss Carlos Gomez and breakout. We could have one for the cost of a K vs. a normal out and any other topic that is beaten to death yearly, monthly, daily or hourly. Seriously, you could make a good amount of money.
  3. Be happy with 2 runs in 5 IP and get a pinch hitter in there. And 4 innings from the Brewers bullpen makes a close game into a blow-out......
  4. I think it's well past time to give up on the Gamel dream-that-was-never-that-much-of-a-dream. Dude can't hit MLB pitching and has never been a passable defender (at least, not outside of 1B). I would be happy if they got a usable bullpen piece for him. More likely he'll end up like the ghosts of 1B prospects past (e.g. Brandon Allen, currently playing in Japan). Well thank god you posted that excellent argument with clear analysis of historical statistics, a thorough review of scouting reports and a unique synthesis of distanct data sets. Now I can sleep well tonight knowing without a doubt that Matt Gamel is a bust. No more fantasy's of the second coming of The love child of Hank Aaron and Barry Bonds. Let's just move on......
  5. Bringing back Yuni would be the only thing that would end my lifelong love affair with the Brewers. I hated the fact we had to put up with him for a year, but if melvin revisits that mistake i am walking...... Peavey archive this post and if it happens you can start my goodbye thread....
  6. I've said it before, and I'll say it again... I really don't think Hart is that bad at all in RF, especially when watching some of the guys that other teams put out there. The issue isn't Hart's impending decline, it's that to sign him to an extension or win the bidding if he goes to free agency you will overpay for the production you will get. Now if Corey is that last peace that will take a mid80's win team and give them an excellent chance at 90 wins then that investment may be worth it. It's not clear at this point if the young SP we plan on putting in the rotation will be good enough to get this team to mid 80's in wins. So I don't see the need to hang our hats on a Hart extension as being necessary. However, things could change in the next year and resigning Hart could be a priority.
  7. I think you summarized everything well in this post and above, but I think the starting payroll for 2013 will be in the $95M range (which will be closer to breakeven than an $80M payroll, imo). I think mid-90's is the likely target for next years payroll. Unfortunately, I think any added payroll savings from the rotation will probably be spent on over-paying for FA relievers. With the added revenue from the Brewers local contract and the huge windfall from that will be shared by all teams and with attendance close to 3M the owners will see a very nice operating profit. I can't imagine ticket sales falling that much for a mid 90's payroll to kill a nice take home for the ownership group,
  8. Maybe I'm just giving Melvin too much credit, but I really don't think he's looking at 2013 as an "all-in" year or a year in which he truly believes the Brewers have an excellent shot at contending from the get-go. To beat the poker analogy to death, I think Dougie goes all-in every year, but he does on the deal and usually with a pair of number cards. He rarely waits to see what happens after a few cards then goes all in (except for 2008) and that was just a case of luck with the Brewers backing into the playiffs because of the epic fail by the mets. As far as what Dougie thinks, he will never say the goal of the brewers is anything but going for it. Day 1 when he was hired he refused to project the Brewers path and basically stated they want to be competitive every year. Getting Greinke and Marcum was clearly an attempt to maximize the last year of Prince, you could make an argument that with 2013 the last year of Hart any majoring deLing this offseason could be another all-in argument to fans. I think his public statements are almost always an attempt to maximiza ticket sales.
  9. I fail to see the benefit of bringing him up now. There is a benefit (someone mentioned it earlier). Dougie wants this time to audition Segura to see if he can be the regular SS for the Brewers next year or if he has to find another abysmal 1 year SS. The benefit is entirely the GMs, but we want Dougie happy so he never leaves and we never have a real chance at a World Series because he puts together a roster ala Dr. Frankenstein.
  10. If Segura is any kind of a hitter, that line-up is looking pretty solid. Hopefully nobody tells him that Arroyo dominates the Brewers.....
  11. Is it possible that Washington said "we'll take him off your hands, but we won't give up anything in return"? Sure. I think if the Brewers asked for something then the Nationals are free to walk so it's more likely that Melvin just let him go. It gives him a justification to call up Jean Jean the Dancing Machine.....
  12. It is said that teams put all of their players on waivers at this time of year. Perhaps the Nationals, out of necessity, claimed him without Melvin having any prior knowledge. They are revocable waivers so Melvin could have pulled him back. Typically, the claiming team that wins (has the better waiver position) negotiates with the original team for them to let them have the player ("a trade"). If the player has a big contract, the team that waived him usually just says 'thank god' and lets the player go. I believe Alex Rios was waived by the Blue Jays with a significant amount of contract and the White Sox claimed him. The Blue Jays just said goodbye.....
  13. Well if you can't beat a team on the field you can always trade them your worst players....... Now if we could only unload Veras to the Reds, Ransom to the Pirates and Morgan to the Cardinals......
  14. Nothing compared to losing game 7 of the NLCS or game 7 of the World Series.
  15. What you could get back in return for these guys, I dont know. but probably young (A-ball talent) players. So you want to trade young players that have (or show the ability to have) success at the major league level for A-ball talent. Do you know the percentage of A-ball talent players that NEVER make it to seeing the majors let alone have some success? You have almost no chance of getting talent back that will reach the same level of success as the players you already have, not to mention adding salary for replacements. Thank god Dougie doesn't adhere to this approach. Gamel-I think the brewers are set with Hart at 1B Hart is only signed through 2013. Gamel is Brewers property for 5 more years, 2 of which are cost controlled. Long-term we need to see if there is a role for Gamel on this team, because if he approaches the success he has had in the minors he will be more valuable than Hart moving forward. If not, we move on. Hart may cost too much to resign and as a small market team the last thing we need to do is get attached to players that don't provide cost effective production.
  16. Has he? Yes he's been on the Chuck and Wickett show often and every timehe mentions it. A lot of you won't agree, but I think Gamel deserves another chance Did you even read brewerfan before you started to post? believe it or not there was life before slapzilla and a significant contingency want Gamel to get a chance to prove he is an everyday player. Rotation . . . Narveson there's a snowballs chance in hell that Narveson is a starter next year. there's a slightly lower chance that he makes it in the bullpen. at his age and the type of injury he had there's a significant chance he will never be productive as a major leaguer again. Estrada has been outperforming 2/5ths of our rotation the last 2 years and I think needs to begiven a chance to start full-time. i am fine without a lefty in the rotation if our top 5 starters are the best we have.
  17. And Casey Macgayheehaw....... Silly Doug he should have just rode Casey through last years post season, never traded him and not signed Aram......
  18. Manny Parra is still on the block... lol. Can you imagine how desperate a team would have to be to want Manny Parra....... I can........
  19. Welcome to Milwaukee. 1 run, 3 runs, 10 runs, there isn't a lead our bullpen won't surrender.......
  20. Kind of baffling for the D'Backs since they traded these two guys for basically a younger Ryan Roberts who they just DFA'd. They've missed Mark Reynolds since he left so they got a player similar to him. Except without the HR power.
  21. What are CarGo's 2 best assets? He's an excellent defender who is wicked fast on the basepaths. So instead of improving on the key tenant that makes use of one of those key assets (you can't steal first base), Carlos spends his time perfecting his power swing. *Sigh* As much as I hate Juan Pierre, he is a great asset when he is getting on base at a 350 clip and running havoc on the bases. We have Juan Pierre talent in Carlos Gomez, but no clue that he needs to work on skills that allow him to get on base so that he can use that speed asset he was born with. Instead he keeps swinging for the fences. At some point maybe the little light will go on.......
