  1. depressing watching the Crew underplay all year, and now its depressing watching them finish strong when it only hurts them.. way to go, Crew..
  2. if the Brewers take him to arbitration, does that mean Gomez could end up paying them?
  3. Capuano won't get anything close to what Davis got at least as a base. He's probably assured himself of a major league deal, but no more than the $1.5 to $2 million range with something like $1-2 million in incentives. Whatever team signs Capuano will probably pencil him in as their 6th starter/long man who'll have a shot to compete for a starting job.His results have been encouraging this year and he definitely makes the existing rotation a lot better if he is healthy. What I meant to say was they should sign at least a Capuano-level pitcher at minimum. I am NOT claiming Cruz is on par with or better than Escobar. I am saying if Escobar is worthy of a starting spot, Cruz as a backup isnt a problem.
  4. Jeffress was sitting at 97-99 for 8(?) straight pitches in his previous 2-inning stint.
  5. I'm not saying Cruz is great, but he was named an allstar, has solid defense, and he hit better than Escobar this year.
  6. I'd expect a Capuano deal along the lines of Doug Davis at minimum. What is everyone's problem with Cruz? He had a very good year in the minors, is young and under control.. He has a plus glove and hits better than Escobar.. I dont get why nobody like him in this thread.. I'd like to see a blockbuster Fielder/prospects for a true #1, bumping both Narveson and Parra to the pen and dumping Villy/Stetter/Hawkins/Coffey. I would be surprised to see Rogers open the year in MLB. I also think a few of the guys have earned their spots with the pen already, like McClendon.
  7. I would say Rogers is easily a #1 if everything breaks right for him. If he can stay healthy and gain control of the movement on his pitches, I dont see any reason that he wouldnt be a #1.
  8. they kept talking about Jeffress topping out at 97, but there was about an 8-pitch stretch where every pitch was between 97 and 99
  9. I think you're missing the point about South Florida. That area has a ton of transplants from all over the country and dont really think locally or support local teams. Good area to have tons of minor league clubs. Portland could be a nice option because Oregon has no team. Seattle is 3 hours away, so I dont see that as a problem. You have to look at states and not just metros for the most part I think: - Portland, OR - Sacramento, CA - San Antonio, TX - Charlotte, NC / Raleigh.. could be interesting considering lack of baseball in carolinas and Virginia. - New Orleans - Salt Lake City - Memphis/Nashville/Louisville could use a team somewhere in there Indiana probably wont support 2 baseball teams. Cinci draws poorly, why would you do Columbus?
  10. I'm not really worried about minor league position players right now. I mean, the only time the org has had to go out and spend real money on a position player via draft/trade in the past 5 years was to get a CF. Prior to that, they've had to dip in quite a bit and have been routinely subpar in doing so. First, anyone getting drafted next year would reach the majors between 2 and 5 years from time of draft. LF Braun has 5 years left C Lucroy - 6 years CF Cain - 6 years SS Escobar - 4 years 3B/1B McGehee - 4 years 3B/RF Gamel - 6 years? RF/1B Corey Hart - 3 years 2B Brett Lawrie - 6-7 years So, most of our positions are covered for the next 6 years already, and the few that arent are still locked up for at least 3 years. Right now, there isnt room for major-league ready prospects as we saw with Gamel this year and Escobar the year before. By the time we need someone to fill the next openings, they might not even be in the org yet because it is so far away. Looking at the minors (beyond Gamel & Lawrie), I think there are several that should develop into MLB starters by the time they finish with the Brewers (though some will be blocked & traded). Some candidates: - Kentrail Davis - Khris Davis - Scooter Gennet - Erik Komatsu - Cody Hawn - Angel Salome - Luis Cruz - Taylor Green - Logan Schafer - Cutter Dykstra There is no sure-fire allstar on that list like a Fielder or Braun, but there should be legitimate, cheap starting talent somewhere in that group
  11. he looked fine in the dugout watching the video..
  12. Ive been saying for the last couple of years that they need to bite the bullet and spend the money on that #1 starter, even ahead of Gallardo, pushing the #5 starter off the list, allowing Gallardo to be a great #2, and getting you dependable innings to rest the pen. I was disappointed in the Suppan signing for that reason as its just another guy in the rotation. Spending half the big money on an average pitcher doesnt make much sense to me. Right now, we have to accept the company line that top pitchers just wont come to Milwaukee given equal pay, but adding a single great pitcher would cover a lot of problems for this team.
  13. umm, Rogers has already been pitching as a starter this year, so it probably wouldnt make sense to move him unless he fails to start throwing strikes. As for Jeffress, I just dont know that he can make it as a starter. He seems to throw better out of the pen. Bottom line is the org needs quality starters and will everything to stretch their staff into starters if possible.
  14. with all the frustration over the crappy pitcher signings the past few years, its refreshing to start to see the first wave of pitching hit the organization (FINALLY!) When was the last time we've had a rookie class like this? This is an exciting group to have make their debuts: - Mark Rogers - Brandon Kintzler - Jeremy Jeffress - Mike McClendon - John Axford (actually played a bit last year, but its his rookie year) - Zach Braddock
  15. no, you cant do this for a guy that played 2 years, one of which was crappy, for your team.. especially without the Crew even making the playoffs before that time. They would have to retire Don Sutton, Rollie Fingers, Cecil Cooper, & others first.
  16. Considering that he'll spend most of next year in the minors, he could be up to 190 IP his second full year in the big leagues, as a 24 year old. I don't see that as too much of a hindrance in his development. If Jeffress has a good showing in the majors, what reasons are there to believe he will get sent down? Not disagreeing, but want to understand what the rationale would be.. service time or development?
  17. I definitely dont take it as him whining. If you listen to the video interview he did in August, you can hear him describe his struggles to play first, which is why he talks about being more comfortable in RF. The Brewers very well could move Hart back to first. He also talks about how tough "other" people have it, with joblessness these days. Not the words of a whiner, who is being forced away from the position that will net him the highest market value in the long term for himself personally.
  18. I think it will be Prince and whichever of Gamel/McGehee nets more in pitching. McGehee gives the club a proven bat and probably better defense, while Gamel is younger with more upside and a lefty.. 2 of those 3 should be gone, but it depends on how the other clubs value them. Lawrie is an interesting trading chip as well. I could see the Crew extending Weeks and flipping Lawrie for a nice arm.
  19. I wouldnt be surprised to see Gamel in the minors for a few more weeks. I just dont think Melvin/Macha are going to put him in the lineup much and they dont want him to sit on the bench much either after last year.. Rogers and Jeffress sounds about right.
  20. that makes a lot more sense to me. He left in the middle of the game shortly after diving into second. I didnt see any clubhouse altercation that would have led me to believe anything otherwise, and I doubt the manager was anxious to put arguably his best hitter on the bench for 5 games.
  21. I'm probably not the best at this comp stuff, but I'll go with Craig Biggio.
  22. if he's tearing up the upper levels at some point next year and the crew is in contention.. it might be tempting to bring him in early even if there is a sore spot at the back of the rotation.
  23. part of my concern was Money recently making it sound like his defensive upside at third was limited.. basically said that his poor defense is to expected with his "heavy feet". Gamel was pretty candid about his poor defense, and basically said that he wants to stick at third, but it's looking more like RF and that he sucks at 1B.
