  1. part of the reason you cant expect a true HOF bat in the system after Braun & Prince is because the Brewers simply havent been drafting in the top 10 for the past several years, aside from LaPorta. The young position players on the Crew that have been playing at all-star levels (Weeks-2, Prince-7, and Braun-5) were all top 7 picks. There are a lot of bats with upside, but if they had the obvious immediate upside, they'd have likely been picked higher.
  2. really a nice opening week overall for the minor league affiliates. Nice to be smacking around all these cubs teams as well.
  3. I think it would be good to extend him. He and Escobar provide a lot of range up the middle. I'd like to see what Lawrie can do, but I dont have much confidence that he'll stick at 2B. Rickie gives the lineup speed and power, and his cost should be reasonable right now. Bottom line: he's worth extending, even if that means trading him when Lawrie is ready.
  4. well, you get bats like Braun and Fielder coming through the system and suddenly you think like the Yankees. The Brewers refocused on pitching in recent years and its starting to show. Meanwhile, the bats in the minors are alright. Not a lot of clear #3 and #4 pro hitters, but certainly a few with that kind of ceiling and many others that would fill out a nice lineup.
  5. yeah the ump is not doing us any favors today. Hart may have looked at that third strike, but Yo put that in the same spot a few times for balls
  6. wow, thats a hefty price tag.. but I guess they can afford it with the pitching future looking a bit better now. I still think its a bit steep for someone with weight and defensive concerns.
  7. was listening to the pregrame and they made a very positive reference to Capuano and his status. Sounds like they expect him to compete for a starting job soon.
  8. hopefully its not like getting the dykstra treatment
  9. I don't think they need to make any pitching moves next year unless they really want to go after a bona fide ace. They have Gallardo, Wolf, Hawkins, Villanueva, Parra and Coffey locked up They likely return Hoffman and Davis. They control Riske. They only are set to lose Bush, Vargas, Stetter, and Suppan... all very replaceable / re-signable guys. There are so many additional possibilities for them in 2011: Capuano, Narveson, Rogers, Scarpetta, Rivas, Butler, Stetter, Axford, Arnett, Braddock, Jeffress... the upper minors look absolutely stacked with pitching possibilities going forward. There is no comparison to the talent level in the upper minors now (in pitching) to where its been for the last decade.
  10. 12-11.. a bit of an average start as they get pitching settled. 6+4+4 = 14
  11. what I want: Escobar Weeks Braun Fielder McGehee Edmonds Zaun Pitcher Gomez what I expect: Weeks Escobar Braun Fielder McGehee Zaun Hart Pitcher Gomez
  12. 90 wins. I don't see this team going backwards with the pitching overhaul and slightly improved fielding. The offensive production and relief pitching will be roughly equal with last year
  13. I really hope he gets lasik. I went from really poor nearsightedness to vision so intense I had headaches the first week from the visual overload. I definitely saw things that I had never been able to see with contacts or glasses, and my vision hasn't weakened in the 10 years since. If this really is his problem, get the surgery and get to rehab.
  14. a lot of players across a lot of sports would be crapping on the organization that pushed this deal, using the media to voice their frustrations
  15. no matter what, the brewers need to maximize the values of their pitchers this ST. If Suppan has played himself out of a position, then Macha needs to talk him up as much as possible. We can all hope that this is the driving force here
  16. wow, at 1.75, I'd have loved to see him back for sure
  17. considering what the brewers spent on Soup and offered CoCo, I'd take Harang in a heartbeat with that contract. I think that would be worth giving away a top prospect as well, and would expect him to be no worse than a Type B free agent, making his value pretty good. The Brewers need to fix their starting pitching, and not just this year. It will be a recurring theme next year and the year after. Harang would solidify the rotation for a couple of years.
  18. I will stop following the crew for some time if they are giving away Escobar in the manner suggested. I really hope Melvin is just posturing though that doesnt seem to be his MO. Escobar was at the same age as Hardy in the last 2 years of the minors, and put up very similar offensive numbers. When you add speed, defense, upside, and cheap years to the equation.. well, Escobar better be playing in Milwaukee
  19. swine flu was overblown.. the symptoms & risks are similar to a normal flu
  20. there were talks of holes in Laporta's swing prior to the trade. I'm still not crazy about giving up a #7 pick and other talents for even a great rental, but I'm guessing they saw enough they didn't like.
  21. Hardy is ranked as one of the best SSs in the NL, and Escobar could be even better. Gamel looks like he'll stick at third, and though he hasn't performed at the plate yet, he has a very high ceiling as shown by his minor league stats (was named first half player of the year in all the minors IIRC, though he tanked after playing injured). The early returns on the other youngsters in terms of stats and ages look very encouraging. While we don't have a guaranteed Braun or Fielder, there are a ton of guys that legitimately project reaching the majors. They have had more than their share of minor leaguers on the allstar teams and I think AAA, AA, and A+ all finished in first place this first-half season. There has to be some talent there.
  22. yeah, the difference now is that brewer scouting is amongst the best in baseball for the past 7 or so years... and they actually sign their picks and even look internationally now. This is what has led to their revival, not just some flukey season like they hoped for in the past.
  23. unsubstantiated rumor about Brewers interest in Haren, thought it was relevant enough to post here: http://buckyville.yuku.com?topic=19943
  24. agree; there are many guys to follow in each of the clubs this year and the initial look at this year's draft is pretty exciting. The top-shelf talent still has questions, as mentioned, because we dont have a clear Ryan Braun or Prince Fielder yet. The pitching in the lower minors is also much more exciting, because we've drafted a lot of pitchers the past 2 years. Also, we have several talented pitchers recovering from serious injury and starting to pitch well.
