  1. First off, this team won't lack power even without Prince & Hart. Where do they stand in HRs this year or for the last several years? We also still need opening for Gamel and Lawrie, both who have good pop in their bats, and one of those two are going to end up in RF. I would not be surprised if both become starters somewhere at the MLB level by the end of next season. One will likely take over for Prince and the other will replace either Weeks or Hart. The other option would be to ride out all of next year with the 3 of them, looking for a big playoff push to end the year. If they are well short, they can trade at them at the deadline. If they want to make a playoff run, they can keep all of them, and ride out next year. Lawrie and Gamel finish the season as MLB backups, then take over the following year after they let 2 of the 3 walk. In that scenario, the Brewers have a minimum of a Type A free agent in Prince, a type B in Weeks, and Hart could even straddle the line of A/B, given he will be judged on this year and the next.
  2. I'm not disagreeing with the move, but they could have kept Oeltjen by adding him to the 40
  3. that is pretty cold. Let's hope he can get better mentally first and foremost. The talent is still there to produce if he can come back around mentally.
  4. I'm guessing because if the Brewers are going to get any value out of him, he'll need to be clean anyways. Why give him a crutch after he worked the organization and himself into a bind?
  5. I realize it's A-ball, but Jeffress seems on a mission with numbers so far: 6 IP, 12 Ks, 2 BBs, 0 H. I'd like to see him headed to Huntsville. We've all been burned by rooting on JJ so far, but if he & Rogers can pull it together, the next few years could get interesting for the pitching staff.

  7. depressing thought of the day: as bad as the parent club has been this year, they are 2 spots above last place, making them the best team in the entire organization.. now that Nashville/BC/DSL teams are in last, and the rest are in second to last.
  8. what a breakout night for lawrie, 5 hits! EDIT: should have refreshed
  9. yeah I struggle with this one. The Crew has one of the worst orgs for pitching and we cant hang onto a first rounder that is pitching sub-1.00 ERA in AAA? I get he's no spring chicken, but..
  10. yeah more interesting medical treatment from the brewers org
  11. good night for Rivas 8K in 5 innings, 2BBs
  12. I'm a bit surprised at how fast the Crew is signing these lower-round players. Last year, they signed just 10 guys after the 23rd pick, compared to 15 already after pick #23 this year. Is this an indicator of bad they see the current lower levels of the farm? I thought this draft was supposed to be a weak one as well.
  13. yeah, 3-4 is a stretch in baseball considering the longetivy & roster sizes. Maybe if 2 of those guys were getting cups of coffee, while the other 1-2 were legit guys that could stick in the bigs.. and even that's a stretch.
  14. too much for what? With the $38M or whatever coming off the books, and the proven desire to pay in that 10-15 range (Lee, Coco, Hoffman, Gagne, Suppan, Cameron), there is no reason they couldnt hit that next level and bank it on one super arm instead of a bunch of "above average" guys.
  15. I expect the Brewers to bring up another 2 semi-legit pitching prospects each of the next 5 years, starting this year with Axford & Braddock. There are a good 10-15 pitchers worth following in the minors right now. So, essentially, the Brewers should have some legit pitching filler for their roster over the next decade. Having said that, there is nobody in the minors that convinces me we have a bona fide ace. Gallardo is a weak #1, but would make an excellent #2. Wolf would make a great #3, but a weak #2. You throw a Cliff Lee in front of that rotation, and suddently you have a very formidable rotation, when combined with all the incoming pitching filler. The other issue is that once playoffs begins, your ace is going to see a greater percentage of the innings. So you really someone impressive in that #1 slot. The Brewers need to save money with all these other filler roles to get that true ace.
  16. the focus on third base seems a bit interesting considering how long Gamel & McGehee are locked up. Maybe they also see them as 1B/RF/LF
  17. there have been some hints about him going there already, so its not too surprising. RF is a position that offers no mental challenges; he can just go out there and concentrate on hitting, which he does best. Given the nature of his sickness, being in the role with the highest daily pressure does not seem to be a good thing for him right now. Still, I dont think the Brewers would make this move if they werent feeling confident with what they have in Lucroy/Kottaras.
  18. Riske was a low-risk, decent upside signing and the guy had decent stats (like Hawkins). I don't think the team could have anticipated the injury problems in this one. All in all, it didnt cost anywhere a Looper or Suppan did
  19. I think the Brewers need to rebuild and by that I mean, stop trying to "finesse" the last pieces of the roster. We are not "one piece away" from a championship team, so there is little value in overpaying some big name veteran pitchers to help the club win right now. It's obvious Prince wont be around for any kind of championship run, so he probably brings the most value with some contract left in front of him. The Brewers don't need a complete overhaul; they have several pieces locked up for a long time: Gallardo, Braun, Escobar, McGehee, Gamel, Lawrie, and enough young catchers. So there are some good pieces, but they need to focus on the future instead of winning right now. edit: and by that, I'm saying the Gagne/Suppan/Looper pitchers that are paying "half price" of the aces for extremely weak results. Bring on the mega-contract Cliff Lees that could make or break the team.
  20. wow, that is some exciting stuff.. I've never left the Rogers bandwagon and this just pumps me up even more
  21. I wouldnt mind moving Gamel or McGehee for a couple of A-level arms with big upside
  22. I'm really not crazy about picking these average college arms. Very little upside and it seems like a lie that these guys can be fast-tracked to the bigs at the Brewers history of picking or developing college arms
  23. given what the front office has thrownat Suppan, Gagne, Wolf, Davis, and Looper.. you would think they wouldnt mind taking a chance on locking a young guy with some upside up for a while.
  24. i really like the pick. Cant base your planning off the fact that the organization has stunk at picking HS pitchers.. have to go with the best player avaialable and someone with upside and he has that. Even if the HS arms have flamed out, what have their college arms done.. Arnett? Frederickson? Also, and in spite of the Brewers bad luck, players are more equipped to overcome arm injuries than in the past. Have to expect that medical treatment will continue to get better over the years.
  25. a nice week for big-name recoveries given all the injuries this season
