  1. Or Moose! Could really go for a Piña-Slam here (or just a hit... or a walk). Edit: Or a wild pitch.
  2. Like so many of the stories surrounding him, this Greinke locker room speech story is great (via Andrew Joseph)...
  3. The bullpen pitching well and shortening games (for the most part) felt like such a huge advantage last year and a very important element of the team’s success. This year has been much more of a “hold your breath and hope” type of experience.
  4. Albers with a big strikeout to end the inning. Nice to see things rolling along with some positive outcomes tonight.
  5. They gave a side view... I don't see it. Yeah, you’re probably right. The side view makes it look more like he was still a foot from the the wall.
  6. [sarcasm]A little disappointed that I’ve only seen the hope here range from Ken Griffey Jr. to better than Yelich (via CC). Let’s aim a little higher. Is it not obvious to everyone that he has the Mike Trout neck?[/sarcasm]
  7. Agreed, I take it as a very positive sign that they believe in him enough to give him this opportunity a month earlier than expected.
  8. Diamondbacks are getting back Corbin Martin, J.B. Bukauskas, Seth Beer, and Josh Rojas. The first three were considered among the Astros top 5 organizational prospects by several prospect outlets.
  9. Cubs are sending back their 2017 1st round pick, pitcher Alex Lange, and 2018 2nd round pick, pitcher Paul Richan.
  10. Good for the Astros.
  11. Across MLB this was the lamest trade deadline I can remember. Aside from some teams presumably out of the playoff hunt adding impact pitchers, everyone else mostly just made small moves around the margins. I completely get that teams are making decisions that they think are in their long-term best interests, but it doesn't do much for the entertainment value associated with seeing teams really embrace the concept of an ebb and flow through competitive cycles. The idea of lines of distinction between "buyers" and "sellers" appear to be blurry at best. Edit: Wrote this before the Greinke deal. That one is fun.
  12. I didn't necessarily have high hopes for Dubon, but I am surprised they couldn't get more value for him then this trade. I appreciate that we can squint and hope these guys are more then what they've been (or at least the best version of what they've been in small windows), but I certainly wouldn't bet on either of them to serve as a significant difference maker down the stretch. It seems like if August waiver trades were still allowed this deal wouldn't have been made today.
  13. Here is their Tweet on the trade...
  14. I don't gloat very often (or more accurately don't get much correct), but I'll chalk this one up as a win.
  15. Jacob Faria is a player I've mentioned a couple of times that I hoped the Brewers might take a chance on. I think he has the potential to develop into a good MLB starter or reliever, has obviously had some setbacks.
  16. One interesting thing about his Double-A performance this season is his BABIP was pretty low (just .269) whereas at Triple-A it's been very high (.384). I know the MLB league average BABIP is generally right around .300, but I assume it is a little higher for Double-A and Triple-A. Maybe there are other reasons I'm not accounting for (like the Triple-A baseball), but it does seem as though at least some of the difference in his offense numbers between the two levels can be explained by batted ball luck (bad luck in AA and much better luck in AAA). I don't believe BABIP is completely luck driven, and considering his power surge and reduced K% this season there is obviously plenty to like about his offensive profile right now.
  17. This makes it each of the past three deadlines that a different NL Central team has traded away some of their top young players for a good starting pitcher: July 2017 - Cubs trade prospects Dylan Cease and Eloy Jimenez for Jose Quintana July 2018 - Pirates trade Tyler Glasnow, Austin Meadows, and prospect Shane Baz for Chris Archer July 2019 - Reds trade prospects Taylor Trammel and Scott Moss (along with Yasiel Puig) for Trevor Bauer
  18. It sounds as though the Pirates Felipe Vázquez is likely to be on the move today.
  19. You’ve made statements over the past week that lead me to believe you don’t have a very good comprehension on the impact of player control. It seems like you are evaluating players in terms of fantasy value rather than actual asset value. Puig is under team control for 60 more days and a possible playoff run. Franmil Reyes, regardless of your opinion of him, is a 24 year old major league hitter under team control for another 5 years following this one. You don’t understand how one is much more valuable than the other?
  20. I am going to state the obvious here, but it is truly amazing to me that the only two teams to make moves for premium starters are two of the three teams in the National League that looked like certain “sellers” a few days ago. Following a mostly slow off-season you start to wonder if this is indeed the new normal? I am sure there will still be plenty of trades today, but I also feel like we might be on the precipice of what may become just how baseball front offices operate going forward. Many (most?) teams are run by front offices with a higher level of risk aversion than we’ve seen previously as well seemingly placing a higher valuation on prospects and young controllable talent. We are now less than 8 hours from the 3:00pm CT deadline. In terms of the Brewers specifically, it feels like today carries a lot of significance for the future of the organization. I don’t necessarily mean that they need to make a move, or not make a move, rather that whatever decisions they make today are likely to have ramifications in both the short-term and long-term. I think we will at some point look back at today as one of the defining moments of this current window. I don’t know what the right answer is at this point, but I am very curious to see how today plays out.

  23. I hope this doesn’t prove to just be Déjà vu of the Angels and Padres weekday series sweeps earlier this season.
