  1. Comparing this trade to the Pirates acquisition of 1.5 years of Chris Archer last deadline is such a stark contrast. I would take each of the three players the Rays acquired over either of the players the Blue Jays just received. Ironically for all of the talk about the Brewers being out on Stroman type arms because of their poor farm system, the Mets had Baseball America’s 26th ranked system. That being said, the rumor all along has been that the Blue Jays were prioritizing starting pitching prospects.
  2. The Mets seemingly really wanted Yasmani Grandal in the off-season and offered him a multi-year deal. Their backup plan, Wilson Ramos, hasn’t worked out as they had hoped and he’s had a poor year defensively. If the Mets still are trying to compete this year or convinced they could lock him up long term maybe they would ask for him to be included. Rosenthal did report this in The Athletic this morning... Rosenthal was the first one to report (in the off-season prior to 2018) that the Brewers were interested in Moustakas and would be open to moving Shaw to 2B. It seemed preposterous at the time and didn’t come to fruition until more than six months later when the Brewers traded for him at the deadline, but clearly he has a decent source on the Brewers front office discussions.
  3. There has to be more I would think? That seems really light if it’s the whole return.
  4. So if the Mets are all in for 2020 but still willing to shop Syndergaard and/or Diaz I wonder if Knebel is someone they would value as a piece in a potential trade with the Brewers?
  5. So should this be the official Keston Hiura appreciation thread?... because I do think we need one of those. If so, here is my wow moment of the day... Among balls he is putting in play, Keston Hiura is Slugging .729 against breaking pitches (i.e. slider, curve) and he is Slugging .786 against off-speed pitches (i.e. change-up, splitter). He is also hitting fastballs just fine (.564 Slugging percentage). His only real weakness so far seems to be swinging through high fastballs, but even when he gets down in the count 0-2 he remains a big threat to hammer any breaking or off-speed pitch in the zone. As MLB Network put it, he is the rare young hitter who can actually hunt for breaking pitches and crush them.
  6. I will continue with preface with maybe this is just the lack of Spring Training to build up arm strength, but if I was a Cubs fan this certainly wouldn’t make me feel great...
  7. Zach Davies: Batter (Cubs) vs Pitching Stats José Quintana: Batter (Brewers) vs Pitching Stats
  8. This is a fun stat (according to this Tweet)... In 542 appearances before this season, Kimbrel had only given up multiple home runs in the same outing just once. In 12 games as a Cub, he's done it twice already.
  9. Having both Christian Yelich and Keston Hiura hitting in the same lineup for the foreseeable future is going to be quite a treat.
  10. I feel confident about the hitters the Brewers have coming up here. It would be so great to get to Kimbrel for a walk-off win.
  11. If the Brewers walk-off the Cubs tonight I may run to Miller Park for tomorrow’s game (from Madison). [Probably not really]
  12. The weird part about this trade is the Twins are giving up a 1B prospect (Lewin Diaz), but getting back a RHP prospect (Chris Vallimont) that was the Marlins 5th round selection last year and has been very good so far in his short career. The Twins may end up not only receiving Romo but may have also acquired the best prospect in the deal (obviously only time will tell).
  13. Yankees outfield prospect Estevan Florial is just 12 months younger than Grisham and hasn’t yet gotten above A+ ball where he currently has a .647 OPS, but according to MLB.com he remains the Yankees #2 overall prospect.
  14. Both SS Gavin Lux and C Keibert Ruiz out of the Dodgers Triple-A lineup tonight. Since they are two of the Dodgers top prospects there is some speculation it could be more then just a scheduled day off (but may be nothing as well).
  15. The delay between when the Diekman trade first broke and when the return was finally announced allowed for lots of speculating from Royals fans on which top A’s prospects they were getting back in return. Some disappointment when they realized they were getting two players outside of the A’s top 30 (at least according to MLB.com). The difference between the expectation of the fan base and actual return was pretty significant. Although, I remember some similar sentiments in the immediate moments after the Adam Lind trade was announced and obviously Freddy Peralta ended up working out pretty well from that one.
  16. From the Baseball Trade Values Twitter account... Edit: They’ve issued the following update...
  17. Along the same theme of players the Brewers drafted in 2012, but didn’t sign, I think former Brewers 15th round selection Buck Farmer could be a decent pick up for the bullpen (more as a secondary bullpen addition, not a primary move). I remember being disappointed at the time the Brewers couldn’t come to terms with Farmer who went to the Tigers in the 5th round the following year. Buck Farmer hasn’t been particularly good throughout most of his MLB career, but this season he has had his average fastball velocity tick up about a MPH to just better than 95-mph and his results have been much better overall. Out of the bullpen he has a 10.6 K/9 and a 3.34 FIP. He has also allowed just 4 home runs in 41.2 IP. Farmer gives up more hits than you would like, but he has a low walk rate which helps limit the damage. He had some rough outings in the middle of the season, but has given up just 2 earned runs over his past 15 outings (basically since mid-June) and has allowed a .574 OPS against over that timeframe. Again, I don’t think he is the type of guy you want to be your big bullpen move, but he would be about the equivalent of adding another Matt Albers to the bullpen which at this point is an upgrade over pitchers like Junior Guerra and Taylor Williams.
  18. It’s now just 100 hours remaining until this year’s trade deadline, Wednesday at 3:00pm central.
