  1. A few random thoughts and observations... At the start of the year if you asked me which west coast stop worried me the most between the Angels, Giants and Padres, I would have picked this one (obviously Dodgers would have topped the list). After going 1-5 in Anaheim and San Francisco this season (although they did go 2-1 in Chavez Ravine), the Brewers could really use a bit of a west coast course correction with this series. Lucchesi has been good at home (3.11 ERA), and very good against left-handed hitters this year (.501 OPS). He has thrown 100 pitches just once this year, and it is sort of curious he is pitching on short rest after throwing 95 and 90 pitches, respectively, in his past two outings. Any time the Brewers are in San Diego it reminds of Ryan Braun hitting some memorable home runs at Petco Park. Braun has played in just 25 games at Petco and has 9 home runs. The only other park where Braun has played at least 20+ games and has a better HR-to-games played ratio is Citizens Bank in Philadelphia (14 HR in 38 games).

  3. The Yankees demoted Clint Frazier to make room for Encarnacion. I have a feeling Frazier is going to be speculated about in a lot of Yankees trade rumors over the next several weeks.
  4. I hadn’t paid much attention to the Cardinals recently so I just looked at Goldschmidt’s last 30 days before Sunday (May 15th - June 15th). Over those past 27 games he has just four extra base hits total (two doubles and two home runs) as well as a .242 BA and .672 OPS. I know he came on strong later in the season last year, but that is a rough stretch after a good start to the season (versus the Brewers at least). EDIT: He did hit a home run on Sunday.
  5. Have to give Albers credit today for coming into the game with bases loaded and no outs, and immediately getting the strikeout of Posey. Even though the Giants got one run across, the 5th could have easily been the inning where it all unraveled once again today.
  6. The outfielders are doing a good job today of making my heart skip a beat on routine fly balls.
  7. This is not a productive comment, and quite frankly isn’t even a fair or worthwhile observation, either.
  8. As the season progresses I certainly won’t look back on this Giants series fondly, but I feel a lot better with Hader on the mound to close it out. In the grand scheme of things a loss today isn’t going to sink the Brewers season, but it sure seems important to salvage something from this series after losing a pair of winnable games.
  9. If everyone remains healthy, maybe it isn’t a perfect fit. That being said, he is one of the few true top half of the order type hitters that are likely to be available this deadline. If they consider him a 2B only, then no it doesn’t make sense. If they believe in his ability to also be mixed into the outfield corners and 3B then I think he helps make their roster more flexible and adds what would likely be one of their top five hitters.
  10. While looking at players who could potentially play multiple positions down the stretch run of August and September I came across Scooter’s name. He has yet to play a game in 2019 due to a groin injury, but is reportedly working his way towards returning either later this month or early July. The Reds have received adequate-to-good production from the infield spots Scooter has played during his time with the Reds (2B - 241 games, 3B - 10 games). Scooter has also played a handful of games in both RF and LF, but probably isn’t going to move to either of those locations as a starter. He also isn’t likely part of the Reds plans beyond this season when he becomes a free agent. I have to imagine Scooter’s trade value is a fraction of what it was prior to the season, and he has familiarity with the Brewers assistant hitting coach Jason Lane (and credits Lane as the genesis for his hitting transformation). If the Brewers do indeed cut ties with Travis Shaw at some point, I think Scooter Gennett could make some sense as a trade target (assuming he regains his health and returns over the next few weeks). I know a return to Milwaukee is always an awkward consideration, but I also don’t think they can continue to carry both Shaw and Aguilar the remainder of the season if each continues to struggle.
  11. I agree that I would be surprised if the Dodgers were motivated to move Freese. I like the idea from the standpoint of finding another player that could cover at least the corner infield spots with regularity. It is sort of along the same lines as bringing in Jerry Hairston in 2011 to play around the diamond, in that case to help make up for the loss of an injured Rickie Weeks and a slumping Casey McGehee. It may make less sense this year with Keston Hiura an option to take over the 2B spot with more regularity, but a right handed bat that can play multiple positions may make the transition away from either Shaw or Aguilar an easier one.

  13. Did not expect the Giants to have 25 hits and 13 runs after the first two games of this series. Hard not to be incredibly disappointed with today’s loss. It is also the first time I can remember this year where having Hader as the 8th-9th inning closer may have cost the Brewers a game versus their usage last year of deploying him an inning earlier. Easy to say in hindsight, but I believe if Hader comes in to start the 7th inning the Brewers win the game.
  14. And now a “Surprised Cain didn’t catch that one” as well.
  15. Slow hit roller? Or inexperience at 1st? granted I have no idea how many games he's played at first in his career This is the 40th time in his career that he has started a game at 1B. You could definitely sense/see the indecisiveness when he got the ball which I would attribute to inexperience.
  16. Well this is certainly one way to keep a putrid offense in the game.
  17. [sarcasm]The silver lining is there a lot of options for a force out now.[/sarcasm]
  18. Nelson has flashed stretches of looking very solid with his breaking stuff, but ultimately had a second consecutive outing where his control just completely unraveled in a hurry.
  19. Brewers going after Madison Bumgarner’s trade value like...
  20. It’s not just this series, but the same situation in San Diego where they are likely to face three lefty starters. This would have been a really nice six game stretch to get Hiura at bats versus a bunch of LHP back in his home state. I am going to be somewhat annoyed in 2-3 weeks when they bring Hiura back after having missed out on this west coast trip.
  21. The true impact left handed relievers mostly likely to be “available”... Sean Doolittle, Nationals (1.5 years of control) Brad Hand, Indians (2.5 years of control) Will Smith, Giants (0.5 years of control) Amir Garrett, Reds (4.5 years of control) Hand and Garrett would likely net a significant package of prospects in order to motivate the Indians or Reds to move them. Smith and Doolittle seem more attainable, but will also attract plenty of attention at this year’s deadline.
  22. His career fascinates me. It is almost like he has had two separate careers, one as a starter in his 20’s and a second as a reliever in his 30’s. He has been in the majors since 2002. He will turn 38 later this season and is sitting on $65 million in career earnings (and counting).
