  1. It’s the umpire’s discretion. He could deny Dietrich the HBP. They can, but they never, ever do. At least not that I hear. I know it has happened at least a couple of times over the past few years. Here is one example... Edit: Some more...
  2. The new term the front office is using appears to be “run-prevention unit” as a way to spread the blame to the defense in addition to the pitchers.
  3. Personally I would have gone with it being a Travis-ty.
  4. Going into tonight’s game Christian Yelich has a home run every 9.035 at bats this season. That would rank 11th all-time in the history of baseball for a single season if he continues the same pace the remainder of the season (B-Ref Link). The current list is a combination of PED users and Babe Ruth... [pre]Rank Player (age that year) AB per HR Year 1. Barry Bonds (36) 6.52 2001 2. Mark McGwire (34) 7.27 1998 3. 5. Question for the room that I am honestly curious to hear the answer to... Would you trade Josh Hader right now if it meant the return would be the exact three players the Pirates sent to the Rays for Chris Archer last year (Austin Meadows, Tyler Glasnow, and top 100 prospect Shane Baz)? Note: This is just a hypothetical for survey purposes, not something that I am proposing is actually a possibility.
  6. This thread has me thinking Moises Alou really missed an opportunity to cross promote the benefits of unique uses for urine while appearing on a Wheaties box. His cereal box cover photo could have been something along these lines...
  7. I agree that the sell scenario is very unlikely and would require the losses to continue to pile up over the next month, but it isn't unprecedented for a competitive team to get a boost from making trades during a down season. The best example that comes to mind are the Yankees in 2016 trading Aroldis Chapman, Andrew Miller and Carlos Beltran. In exchange they received (among several others) Gleyber Torres, Adam Warren, Clint Frazier, Justus Sheffield, Erik Swanson (Sheffield and Swanson were later traded for James Paxton), and Dillon Tate. On the date the Yankees made the first of those three trades (July 25) they were 51-48 and just 7.5 games back of both the division lead and the wildcard. Those trades ultimately spring-boarded their chances for greater future success. Now obviously the Brewers don't likely have someone they would consider parting with that would bring back a Gleyber Torres type prospect, but if it is clear come the end of July that things aren't breaking their way then they better at least listen to offers on players like Moose and Grandal.
  8. I have a similar opinion. The best teams don’t always win (and advance) in the playoffs, but you have to at least get into the playoffs to have a shot at the ultimate goal. If on October 1st their season is still alive than I am at least content that after a long season they have put themselves in a position to make a run at a championship. As far as evaluating “success” with the benefit of hindsight, I think it goes beyond just this season. If this current window closes without the Brewers appearing in a World Series it is always going to be a bit disappointing. Maybe that is due in part to the fact they were so close last season, but it seems like this is the window where they have a real chance to win an NL pennant and make a World Series.
  9. Between Triple-A and MLB this year Keston Hiura has 21 HRs in just 253 at bats. That is one home run in every 12 at bats. I have always envisioned him developing into a doubles machine, but never really expected him to be a potential 35+ home run guy. It has been the exact opposite this year however, he has produced more home runs than doubles.

  11. Thus far 19 of Yelich’s 28 home runs have been solo shots. It would be nice to have Yelich hit more often with runners on base this year, anecdotally that doesn’t seem to be happening as often as it should.
  12. The fact that Travis Shaw thought that was a ball should tell us everything we need to know about how poorly Travis Shaw is seeing the baseball right now.
  13. I like the idea of adding his bat, but according to FanGraphs he was the worst rated defensive player in baseball last year (among qualified hitters), one spot behind Khris Davis. I don’t watch enough Tigers baseball to know his defensive deficiencies firsthand, but the publicly available data doesn’t view his outfield defense kindly. If they were willing to run a bat first, poor defender out to RF with regularity I think they may have stuck with Domingo Santana.

  15. Coming into this game Stammen had given up 12 hits and 7 runs in his last 7.2 innings.
  16. My prediction is the Brewers end up with their annual White Sox bullpen acquisition which would likely be Álex Colomé this time around.
  17. To be fair, last year Hader would have pitched that inning and the outcome would have likely been different.
  18. I know, I know... hindsight and all, but only allowing Hader to pitch the back end of games (8th and 9th) is starting to cost them.
  19. I know we’re talking about the antithesis of Johnny Hustle, but I am not sure how many major leaguers would have busted out of the box on that one and taken second.
  20. Well that was ugly. Four players within close proximity to it as it falls to the ground.
  21. Braun has come up just short of a really special day on his last two at bats.
  22. Ben Gamel’s OPS is 30+ percentage points higher versus LHP this year. Nice of the Padres to play to the Brewers advantage there.
