  1. Weeks and Fielder are always going to get hit a lot. It's not intentional, at least not on the part of the pitcher.
  2. I think that braun fellow might be a keeper.
  3. why is kapler playing against lilly? he's only 4 for 22 coming into the game against him, with a sub .600 OPS. If you play matchups--which is what platooning is--then you should play the matchup, not just blindly do it.
  4. the cubs are only allowed one player per game to hit well. today it's lee.
  5. can we all type his name correctly, please? G-A-G-N-E. In your mind, pronounce it GAG-NEE, if that's the only way you can remember. He's not named after a river in India.
  6. Here's a link to stats for the 2005 season: http://actasports.com/sow.php?id=85 Lee saved 23 bad throws, Pujols 42. It's from the fielding bible, whatever that is.
  7. watching the game on ESPN2, I didn't recall Sheets ever going over 91 mph on his pitches, so I wonder where those numbers come from.
  8. I don't exactly know how they figure it, but there is a stat for bad throws saved by the 1b. Lee had about 20, and was in second place to Pujols who had about twice that many. There is a thread on the Cubs ESPN board about the best defensive players in the division. quite a few cubs fans are in denial about Pujols being so good.
  9. Hall is a slightly above average starter, offensively. His versatility in the field makes him a very nice guy to have around. He's not a gold-glover, but he's pretty solid whenever he's gotten steady playing time at SS, 3B or 2B, and was pretty good in CF during the second half of the season.
  10. Regarding defense, actually now I'm warming to the idea of Gwynn in CF. Not that I think he is that remarkable, but none of the other guys can play as shallow as he does. If that's where they want to position their CF, it has to be Gwynn. Personally, I'd do whatever I could to get at least a couple starts per week for Crazy Joe Dillon, because his offense is potentially a significant increase over any of the bench players, but if they won't move Hart to CF, they've pretty much tied their hands.
  11. those are a bit of a surprise being beyond the top 50.
  12. Yeah! Good Guys Win. Riske with the first save of the season. :D Gagne with the first win http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/frown.gif
  13. I agree with jihad. problems off the field aren't the same as problems on the field, though both can ruin a career.
  14. well, if you assume gwynn will get off to a great start like last season... big assumption, but it's the only justification I see.
  15. if you restrict it to pitchers that log nearly as much innings as Zambrano, as regularly as Zambrano, that list gets pretty small. I'd rather have Harang than Zambrano, though.
  16. why is escobar in Huntsville rather than Nashville?
  17. well, if fukudome has an OBP of .310 vs. lefties, it won't be so great an idea.
  18. I dunno, lots of offensive linemen have long careers. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif I can't think of any baseball players who have similar body types to Fielder. The big pitchers tend to not have the base of muscle that Fielder has. Prince is motivated to exceed his father, which, in part, means a longer career.
  19. thatcher is another sidearming lefties. It might make some sense to have two on the roster during september, or if shouse had been grossly overused, but he didn't really have a place while shouse is on the roster. Same with Stetter. He'll only make the roster if shouse is injured, overworked, or for a cup of coffee in September.
  20. I think you have to put the upper end for hall at 35, since he has done that, and he's not exactly old. there is no such thing as "excess power", although there can be insufficient OBP.
  21. I don't get how anyone can say the sexson or overbay trades were anything but a success. the davis trade will only turn against us if Eveland turns out to be a solid ML player. The linebrink trade wasn't a failure; the picks should net better players than inman and garrison, and regarding thatcher, exactly how many sidewinding lefties does the organization need? Shouse and Stetter should be enough. trading posednik for a couple years of lee, a couple years of cordero, and a couple of high draft picks seems an overwhelming success. Signing Kendall was probably the best available option.
  22. the discussion has been gross vs. gwynn. how about hart in CF and dillon getting some starts in RF. I don't think it's a stretch to hope for a .800 OPS from Dillon.
  23. final rosters aren't due until Sunday, so it could happen that late.
  24. Ned seems set on having Anthony start most of the games in CF in the time B.C. (Before Cameron). While I have no problem with this happening some of the time, I wonder what it would take to give some starts to Gross (in CF or RF) or Dillon (in RF, Moving Hart to CF)? Let Gwynn PH for the pitcher and be the late-inning defensive replacement!
