  1. describing Theriot as a black hole is a tremendous exagerration.
  2. pie hasn't done anything yet, and it's not like he's ever been a top 5 prospect. he might end up fine, and even do well in 2008, but I can't see why anyone would be confident in that.
  3. OH MY GOSH! I just realized that the constellations aren't the result of creative interpretation of the position of the stars but actually represent a fixed and predictable pattern that was preordained....and it must be preordained by the same powers that control my horoscope. ahem...I guess what I mean to say is a "pattern of bad luck" isn't an oxymoron.
  4. just to clear something up... a catcher never has to throw more than 140, so why should he practice throwing farther?
  5. I don't see how theriot at SS is an offensive inadequacy, particularly when compared to pie at CF. And Soto is no sure thing. To be honest, I don't really think the additions made or likely to be made will determine the outcome in the divisional race. What will be most important is if the young brewers improve and the older cubs decline. That, and injuries.
  6. what I don't get about Cano's contract is why do the Yankees do it? If they want him when he becomes a free agent, they can afford to pay him, and they could have saved some money up to that point by just going to arbitration each year.
  7. to me, the only guy you'd go above slot for is a guy that you felt was worth it. to say, "we're going to go above slot this year" is foolish if the players available when you pick aren't worth it. Let's say your slot is $2.5 million bonus. You have a choice to pick a guy who won't sign for less than $7 mill or a guy that will sign for $2.5. Is the guy worth the higher cost? Even if he's a slightly better prospect, he might not be worth the cost.
  8. 4 years at 30 million, team options in years 5 and 6 for 14 and 15 million, respectively. If that's what it takes to buy out a guy's arbitration years, brewers will need to be making some hard decisions about our boys.
  9. I think it's too early to assume he won't have a major league career.
  10. it would be bad PR to trade one your best players when you claim to be wanting to win-now. everyone would be thinking, "same old brewers, trading away their expensive players". The only way I see it happen anytime soon is if it is part of a trade to bring in someone even more elite than Sheets. so really, no chance anytime soon.
  11. c'mon, I'm still waiting for examples of how you can get big returns (above their apparent value) for young catchers. Shoppach was the 2nd most valuable trading chip when Boston got Crisp from Cleveland. Marte hasn't turned out well so far, but he was valuable at the time. it doesn't make sense to pay much more than value for a catcher, regardless of whether the cost is a draft pick, players in a trade, or salary.
  12. I don't think they'd want any of those guys as they already have 5 guys that can start without including Schilling. Maybe more than that, I don't know what Papelbon is doing. Boston would only want one of those guys if another injury crops up. They might want sheets or gallardo, though...
  13. I'd like some substantiation of the "overpaying for catchers" idea. I can't think of too many of those actually happening. Just because the average catcher is dreadful, doesn't mean that they cost much more in a trade than they are worth. seems some folks on this board are willing to overpay, but not many GMs are. On the other hand, GMs don't just give one away if they already have a guy in place, so I can see where you are coming from, a little bit.
  14. mench can actually play a little D.
  15. my attitude is put a veteran as a band-aid in there until you can develop one from within unless you can get a young catcher at a reasonable cost. using 4 of the first 7 picks on catchers only assures having your low minors stocked for the next couple of years, and the low minors are OK with catchers. No big reaches to fill a position with early draft picks (having a catcher jump a couple of players you rank higher might make sense, having a catcher jump 17 players you rank higher doesn't).
  16. want: Sheets, Gallardo, Suppan, Capuano, Parra. two of villy, bush, vargas in the pen, one traded away. expect (barring injury): Sheets Gallardo, Suppan, Bush, Capuano. villy in pen, vargas in pen or traded, Parra in Nashville (BOOO!).
  17. Would you call a spaniard "non-white"? That's the point. Some hispanics don't like to be viewed as something other than caucasian, because that's exactly what they are.
  18. BJ Upton, off the top of my head. Maybe Ryan Zimmerman. Fielder, Braun are good choices. Russell Martin.
  19. I looked up this issue after I made my guess. What I found is that all that exists out there are educated guesses. Kinda disappointed me, since it seems a fairly easy thing to estimate--at least if you have a graduate degree in Stats or the equivalent.
  20. I think bush did have more big innings than you would expect by random. I seem to recall that fairly late in the season he was leading the team in zero-run innings.
  21. "white"? um. Unless Quevedo came from a native american tribe, I think some sensitivity training is in order.
  22. I've been a Parra supporter for awhile, I just hope he spends most or all of 2008 in MKE, preferably starting. Otherwise, he'll still be on the prospect list.
  23. I think Parra's age moves him down the rankings, otherwise I think he should probably be right up there too. If he was 22, with his stuff and productivity last season, he'd be one of the top 20 prospects, maybe top 10.
  24. Bonser is a good pitcher, last year's results notwithstanding.
  25. In these rankings, elite prospects are the most important things, and when LaPorta, Parra, Escobar, and Jeffress (depending on the ranking) are your top guys, you're not going to have many top 20 or even top 50 guys. While the elite prospects SHOULD be the most important when comparing organizations, I wonder if depth is given too little credit. Guys like Villanueva can be productive major leaguers, even at a young age, without ever being a top prospect. I believe the depth is quite strong in the organization; the winning percentage would support that.
