  1. I'm not about to defend Cappy and the terrible season he has had, but there weren't many who would have predicted it. Even if someone suggested trading him prior to this season, it was because of his supposed high trade value (and thus the expectation for a solid #2/3 LHSP). So, given that we were expecting to contend this year, DM really would have had to been blown away to trade a solid, #2/3 LHSP making $4m/year. I think we all need to remember that hindsight is 20/20. It's very unfortunate that with his performance this season he's stuck in no-man's land (as far as the Brewers are concerned). - Trade value pretty low - Arbitration-eligible and probably in line for $4m/year again (give or take a little) If we don't believe he can turn it around and be a productive starter, $4m/year is pretty high for a team like the Brewers for a mop-up long-relief pitcher. But it would be equally difficult to non-tender him as well given his past performance, relative youth and the fact he throws with his left arm. Very difficult position heading into the offseason unless he really picks things up.
  2. is gross better than monroe? Yes, Gross is better than Monroe. Even pre-season projections on Gross by Baseball Prospectus had Gross being better than Monroe. And that's also obvious since Monroe was released. As for Wickman, the main reason the Braves released him (assuming they aren't able to get a low class A player for him) is because he has an attitude problem (didn't like pitching when it wasn't a save situation). Are we going to demote CoCo in order to acquire Wickman to close for us? Well, it would be a move I guess. But I don't see how that would improve the team.
  3. Not surprising. Waiting one more start to make sure the blister won't be a problem is probably a good idea. We're dying to get him back, but a blown blister could put him out for another 2-4 weeks.
  4. It will be interesting to see what the Braves can get for him. I would imagine there'll be some interest from the contending teams.
  5. That's my point as well - just give us a suggestion and we can debate. Just saying "move for the sake of making a move" isn't enough. It's just not that easy.
  6. Give a suggestion - my point isn't that they should NOT acquire someone if someone is available. My point has been that there isn't anyone available.
  7. No, I'm arguing that there's no one on the list (so far) that I could see DM having much interest in. Which is to counter the contention that DM isn't doing enough or MA isn't willing to spend $$. I believe that if there was anyone we could acquire that would upgrade our club (at any $$ right now), MA and DM would be all over that player.
  8. I believe it does and all I've been able to find is that he's indicated that he'd waive it to go to an AL club. But if that's true, I would sure think he may waive it to give a WS ring a shot. And then worry about signing with an AL club for '08 if he really wants to play another year.
  9. Here are the guys KNOWN to have cleared waivers so far this year: C- Josh Paul and Mike Piazza IF - Mark Sweeney OF - Pat Burrell, Willy Mo Pena, Eric Byrnes P - Kyle Farnsworth, Mike Myers, Josh Towers, Steve Traschel The only one on that list who I could see the Brewers having any interest in is Towers. But a) how much of an upgrade would he be and b) what would we need to give up to acquire him? (Byrnes would have been a second one, but it appears the D-backs intend to keep him given the contract extension.) And in general, the secretive nature of these proceedings is part of what makes the proceedings even possible. The more public these are made, the less teams could even try to move players in August. If it all became public, then you may as well just make the trade deadline 8/31 and forget about this waiver period of trades.
  10. Just perusing the mlb4u site and noticed on the list of players who could clear waivers and be traded in August that Bonds is on the list. Here's an interested possibility (pure speculation on my part), but do you think the Cubs could make a run at Bonds? Just tossing it out there to see what others think. I believe it's a very remote possibility, but it just got me wondering when I saw his name on that list.
  11. 18.0 for Mench was from BP's PECOTA card (that number was updated with playing time projections on 6/19). Projected VORP for 2007 was 17.4 for him. Projected playing the two corner OF positions and PH (LF 35%, RF 25%, PH 10%). Projected WARPs for 2007 were 3.2 for Mench, 2.8 for Jenkins, and 4.4 for Burrell. So actually, the Menchkins platoon vs Burrell is pretty evenly matched (including 2007 salary - $11.4m for Menchkins and $13m for Burrell). What I'm probably doing the more I look into this is arguing for Menchkins again next year (at least) since Burrell may be as good as you could hope to acquire (without giving up the farm) in the off season. Or Burrell may at least be representative of what you could acquire.
  12. I apologize if there's a thread already on Pat Burrell (so please move this to the other one if appropriate). But I just saw that he was "known" to have cleared waivers. With his resurgence, would anyone try to work out a deal with the Phils to obtain Burrell to bridge the gap until LaPorta's ready? Notes: - Signed through 2008 ($14m next year, so either you include Jenkins in the deal or ask the Phillies to cover part of his salary) - OPS around .900 the last three years and looks like he's heading toward another finish around that number - Hits RHP and LHP almost equally as well (at least this year - I didn't research is further) - 30.6 VORP per BP (12.5 for Jenkins; 18 for Mench; 8.5 for Gross) - Slightly younger than Jenkins The downside would certainly be determined on how much you'd need to give up to get him. Opinions?
  13. You're correct about some taking this seriously. Someone will have to watch other fan sites to see which forum (probably the Cubs) who will take this thread completely out of context and begin ridiculing us. "Ha, they really think they can get Wright and Reyes for Braun" - I can see it already....
  14. I would also check Jeff's Sportscards here in Milwaukee (actually Brookfield and Menomonee Falls). They always seem to have pretty good stock AND ways to get things they don't have. They have recently had some great framed, autographed Yount jerseys.
  15. One of the best things about that Braun HR last night was Lee's reaction. Did his head even move? That was classic.
  16. You already knew they didn't - I think my Gameday was lagging a bit.
  17. See if they can get these other two runners home.
  18. I'm not sure I believe since I've only seen it on TV, but what it appears he does is pretty amazing stuff.
  19. Thanks for the post - great perspective.
  20. ok, got me with the 4-year-old. Then I'd vote for the lakefront and Irish Fest
