  1. He's making far more this season than he would have in any of the seasons under the Met's contract by a considerable amount. 3.25mil is a considerable amount? He gambled $41.75mil for a 7% raise this year....that sounds, less than ideal. Grandal probably breaks even next offseason if he takes the highest offer (probably 3/$40mil). Any issues this year and it was a hefty mistake. He also cited winning and ST location, but I am guessing that was a decision long after the Mets offer when the multi year deals were more like $40mil total where $18mil over one year made more sense. The only way he loses that much money is if he completely falls off a cliff or gets a career ending injury this season. You also fail appreciate the risk of signing a lower annual salary for a longer period of time. He could very well have a monster season this year and get a higher offer next season. If that happens then he would have actually lost money by accepting a lower AAV for more years. What is more likely, him having at a comparable season as he usually has, completely fail or get a career ending injury? It isn't like there isn't a risk of losing money by taking to little money for too many years. Just ask Lucroy.
  2. He's making far more this season than he would have in any of the seasons under the Met's contract by a considerable amount. Given the trend seems to be going away from long term deals anyway that isn't as out there as it seems. What he's doing is helping raise the annual salary in a time when fewer long term contracts are being offered.
  3. Even though Gamel is more of a known quantity than any of these guys. I think you could pretty legitimately argue that the Broxton return was better than the Santana return. Stearns said there was additional interest in Broxton beyond just the Mets. I don’t remember hearing similar sentiments when Domingo was moved. I obviously don’t know this for certain, but I wonder if the number teams engaged in trade discussions involving Broxton was actually higher than Santana. I remember reading there was more interest in Broxton that Santana last year as well. I thought it was just a rumor mill sort of thing but now I think there was something to that rumor.
  4. It appears to be a win all around. Broxton seems like a guy who needs to play regularly and he wasn't going to get that here. The Mets needs OF help and they got a very good defender who has some upside offensive even with the holes. Potential 20 hr 20 steal guys who can play defense at an high level have value. Especially at his price. We trade a spare part for minor league depth with a nice combination of pre 40 man roster guys and AAA talent with options remaining to keep the major league shuffle functioning. Good luck Keon, you were fun to watch. On defense anyway.
  5. While I agree defensive metrics not very accurate in general and even less so in small samples I think the eye test is also very suspect. It comes with preconceived ideas that is hard to filter out. If you think the guy is going to suck to begin with you are far more likely to remember the bad than the good. The same holds true the other way around. It's just human nature.
  6. When a team uses new, innovative approaches it is hard to get accurate projections from analytic based evaluations. Analytics takes time to compile stats to evaluate. The very definition of new and innovative means that isn't available. Using traditional metrics for a new approach fits like a square peg in a round hole. FWIW I wouldn't be surprised if Aguilar does regress considerably but I also don't think this team's success last year was due to a bunch of guys having a career year. For every Aguilar there was a Santana.
  7. The general consensus is Hiura will be an average MLB defender at 2B. His college arm injury led to a lot of unfounded speculation that he's a poor defender. Add to that if he ends up an average defender he will be an upgrade over Gennett.
  8. I was following a dump truck today that had passing side written on the left mud flap and suicide written on the right side. It was driving in the left lane going 60 mph.
  9. While Thames may not have passed the eye test he actually rated far better than terrible in as an outfielder in defensive metrics. He certainly is not a waste of a spot. Saying things like terrible, no value, a waste of a spot and the worst in MLB history is hardly ever accurate. Saying Yuni B was the worst first base option ever being the one possible exception. Defensive metrics mean nothing for an outfielder on that small of a sample size. Fair point but nothing does in such small samples. That includes the eye test. I think the eye test is overly influenced by the assumption he wan't going to be good because he is a first baseman by trade.

  11. The problem is he probably isn't going to get regular playing time next season. There is a legitimate argument to use Thames over him at least some of the time. If Gamel played center field it would help but he doesn't so that isn't helping. The only other place he can play is first but the same problem arises there with Aguilar and Thames. Which is why I think his value is tied to 2020 and beyond barring injury.
  12. I don't think sending Gamel in AAA and come up if needed is the same thing as saying he is AAAA depth. I think the reasoning behind bringing him in and sending him to AAA is to have that extra year on the back end if possible and have better than AAAA coverage now.
  13. Am I the only one here who thinks they are targeting Gamel for AAA this season with the idea he can come up for injury needs? We have Broxton to cover center on Cains days off and late inning a defensive replacement. We also have Thames to take over for the days Braun is off with Perez in the wings as well. I just see Gamel as more of a 2020 major league outfielder depth than an opening day major league guy this season.
  14. I see Gamel as the swing man between AAA and the majors with Thames as the guy who plays when Aguilar or Braun don't. You might be right though. I could also see Thames being dealt. I wouldn't mind if he was. But I also see the value of two guys who have had more success in recent years at the ML level than Gamel does. Why not use them and have Gamel as a legit MLB type backup in AAA if needed? It doesn't hurt to have another year of service time by him sitting in AAA if he's not needed.
  15. A lateral move but probably a better fit. The upside seems to be on Santa's side but the extra low minors pitcher migates that somewhat. We need to keep the farm stocked as well as upgrade the major league roster. Getting someone who fits the major league roster better while adding something to the minors isn't a bad thing. With Braun being less than a full time starter these days it might have been nice to have Santana but this also gives Thames a place to play when Braun doesn't.
  16. The same would be true if he didn't have a no trade clause. I think the better thing for us is they suck, he refuses to be traded and they are stuck paying him.
  17. I tried Vue and it's not bad but less than stellar to navigate. I only used it for the free week because I can't get Sunday night games at home so I didn't really set it up with a lot of personal settings but it wasn't as easy as regular cable guides to find what I want. My guess is it will eventually get better. The original Amazon prime interface was pretty brutal too but got better.
  18. Everybody is different so I can only speak for myself but I never expected or cared about a card from people. We understand we live longer than they do. We also know we care more about them than pretty much everybody else. If you want to show some sympathy strike up a conversation about pets in general. People who have pets love talking about animals in general so maybe ask where she got her cat, what kind was it, was it a rescue or if she plans on getting another. Edit: I didn't notice you said being put down not already down. That just sucks and there isn't anything to do about it. Definitely wait until after to send anything. Talking about pets in general is ok if you are in a situation where you feel you should say something. That allows her to steer the conversation to or away from her personal situation as she feels most comfortable with.
  19. He doesn't give up many home runs or walks. It takes three singles to get a run.
  20. Why do people come to our shop and complain our prices are too high while paying for it? We are a mom and pops specialty shop who survives on quality over quantity, not a discount chain. It's like going to a five star restaurant and complaining their food is more expensive than McDonalds.
  21. No it isn't. It is giving up the chance to get the next Lutz combined with the risk of getting the next Shane Watson or Ryan Bolden.
  22. That must be where the origination of what I read came from. Thanks for posting it. I got mine second hand but from someone I trust to be accurate.
  23. Just a tidbit I read about the 40th pick. Of the 54 players selected there 18 made it to the majors so far. While I'm not a fan of WAR, in this instance it might be useful for a general idea of the value of that pick. Only nine had a positive WAR. Going by career WAR Claudio would have been the 6th best pick at 40. So the pick might have got us a better player but odds are against it. I think some of the draft pick's value in some eyes are the dream of what could be. It's like being offered the choice of a lottery ticket or a dollar bill. The dollar is less exciting but probably the better deal.
  24. Someday someone will try it. Using two ground ball pitchers to hide the defensive shortcomings and it might even work. Or, it turns out to be Kotsay in center.
