  1. And maybe the Cubs sign Bryce Harper and Clayton Kershaw in the winter following the 2018 season....
  2. Considering how much Stearns got for Thornburg, it is certainly exciting to speculate on what we could get for Knebel. Problem is, jury is still out on Dubon and many of times a roll of the dice like Shaw doesn't work out... Having said that, there aren't many closers who are elite year after year. It would be a classic moment of "selling high" for Stearns to trade Knebel this offseason, and it wouldn't surprise me.
  3. Braun did have a .871 OPS vs LHP in 2017. He still has value.
  4. Kelenic to the Giants at pick #2 makes too much sense. I predict the Tigers take Hankins #1 overall
  5. adambr2 - you are probably right... There are quite a few questionable GM's out there still employed though. Never know...
  6. A young, hungry team coming off of a 86 win season?!?! What's not to like?!!!!
  7. Re: Broxton While, granted, it was in a small sample, Phillips hit .295/.368 vs RHP this year. I predict he will platoon with Brinson in CF, with Brinson occasionally getting starts in LF/RF too... Unless Braun or Santana is traded, Broxton will likely be the odd man out, especially considering that Perez/Dubon/Villar can play OF and fill the super-utility role.
  8. Stearns' MO is young, controllable talent I expect Phillips, Brinson, Dubon, Wilkerson and possibly Burnes to be on the 25 man roster coming out of Spring Training.
  9. Walker will be arguably the top 2B available across all of MLB in free agency. Doubt we keep him. Doesn't really fit the Stearns MO of "young controllable talent" I think the Brewers will clean house in the bullpen a bit: I predict at least Torres and Drake won't be back. Garza is already gone, we know that. I'll go ahead with my annual prediction that Braun will be traded. Villar will be back.
  10. I predict he'll be an Angel. Seems like the exact type of pitcher the Angels sign...
  11. The game recently where Shaw walked off the Cubs in the 10th....
  12. Brett Phillips finishing strong! Should be starting every game in CF vs RHP in 2018....
  13. Travis Shaw in 2017 vs LHP: .254/.316/.471 in 138 At-Bats Eric Thames in 2017 vs LHP: .186/.275/.402 in 97 At-Bats That is 235 very low production at-bats from the top of the order. Thames really should never hit vs LHP's, and it should be kept to a minimum for Shaw... Keon Broxton had 309 At-Bats vs RHP, hitting .220/.290/.417 vs RHP When you are looking for ways to improve the offense, in 2018, start with those 544 At-Bats Hernan Perez hit .319/.345/.451 vs LHP's btw .... Jesus Aguillar hit .301/.365/.524 vs vs LHP's It is simple lineup construction. You give the majority of the 235 total AB's Shaw/Thames had vs LHP to Perez/Aguillar, and you get better production vs RHP's in 309 AB's than what Broxton provided, that can improve the team plenty Brett Phillips vs RHP's .286/.367/.457
  14. Actually, I appreciate you starting the thread. It is very fun (for me) to speculate about and read other's takes. Roster building is a fascinating subject to me. I'm an unapologetic Stearns fan. I see the game changing rapidly and I think Stearns is ahead of the trends. He saw things that others didn't and built the roster accordingly and the Brewers became contenders ahead of schedule. I don't see a huge regression coming. I think the Brewers will keep getting better and better over the next 3-4 years, unless we get hit with horrible luck such as mass injuries/player suspensions i.e. The unforeseen forces that break a fan's heart etc etc I'm really interested in what happens with Villar. Counsell seemed to give up on him, or just thought he had better options (kinda the same difference). In August & September combined Villar hit .321 with a .345 OBP. Am I willing to bet my house that he's back to 2016 production? No, but there is reason to be optimistic. What is unclear is how Stearns views him. 2B in general is a big question mark. Hiura won't be ready until 2019 most likely.
  15. 20th pick? Is that what we have? By most accounts the 2018 Draft is supposed to be one of the best in a decade or two, so we can still get an impact player or two there.... I think 2017 does bode well for 2018. I see a nucleus of Arcia, Shaw, Santana, and Piña as players who took huge steps forward, gained invaluable experience, proved they can play and got the taste of being in a pennant race. Phillips in a smaller sample showed he can hit MLB pitching and supply plus defense. We have a young, hungry, smart GM who will likely pull off unexpected moves that can propel the franchise further forward.
  16. It is tough. Disappointing ending to an exciting season. I hope they don't "stand pat" with the offense and just hope for improvements from the young guys. I'll be interested to see if Stearns has given up on Villar the way that Counsell apparently has... Should be a fascinating offseason. Lots of questions left to be answered. Can Stearns find another diamond in the rough or three? They have money to spend....
  17. The Angels will sign him because.... well, that is just how the Angels roll.
  18. 2 games left and they've surpassed my prediction by two wins already. I think I was correct on Hader being the ROY, and Arcia has been a pleasant surprise. Missed on other picks. Sticking with my prediction of the Indians being WS champs....
  19. A "rebuilding" team still in the playoff hunt with just two games left in the regular season. No matter what happens the rest of the way, a tip of the cap and a big thumbs up on a remarkable season.
  20. Slightly shocked Thames is able to play. Figured he was done for the season after fouling that ball off his foot and having to leave the game. That looked bad
  21. I think it'd be a mistake to give up on Villar. Unless he has an injury or issue that the public isn't aware of, it seems clear that Counsell has given up on him at least for this season, but what remains unclear is how Stearns values him moving forwards. I doubt they'll keep both Perez & Villar longterm, especially considering that Dubon can likely provide similar production that either of them provided in 2017, except with better defense. I'd like to see us deal from a position of strength at the winter meetings and trade Brinson for pitching. Phillips can play CF. I'd prefer that we do not resign Walker, Sogard, Vogt and instead use that money on the bullpen.
  22. Anderson Davies Woodruff Suter Means we are looking for a #2 starter, not a #5! And that is presuming that Anderson isn't just a flash in the pan for 1.5 years....
  23. I'd really like to see the Brewers pay big money for Alex Cobb. In order to take the next step we need significant upgrades, and while I believe the in house options have potential I would feel much better bringing in a free agent who can really help, especially with Nelson out for awhile. Perhaps another trade like the Segura-Chase Anderson trade? Something needs to be done, I'm certain Stearns realizes it more than me and moves will be made
