  1. Strongly agree. Load up with a bunch of guys in the farm system that throw 98+. Thornburg alone brought back tremendous value.
  2. You have to wonder if the 2 years $14 million guys will out produce somebody like Adrian Houser... And/or if we add to the starting pitching through trade or free agency can you move Woodruff to the bullpen and would a 2 year $14 million guy out produce Woodruff? To answer your question, I believe Reed, Tony Watson, and Brian Duensing are still available right? As well as Wade Davis & Greg Holland?
  3. Archer would improve our pitching staff, I don't think anybody could deny that. It just comes down to the price of getting him and whether that is worth it. I wouldn't want to give up any of our top young pitchers for him. Burnes, Hader etc...
  4. Phillips actually had a better WAR last year than Braun, 1.4 to 1.2, and Phillips only had 98 plate appearances!
  5. Just playing along, I would think the O's would ask for Hader + Woodruff + Brinson for Manny I would actually accept that trade, but only if I could get Manny to sign a 5 year extension first....
  6. I assume they mean better than 2018 Braun. I don't see either one approaching Braun's 2007-2011 numbers, but in terms of WAR it isn't that huge of a stretch that they could out produce Braun in 2018 and especially 2019. We'll see. It does remain to be seen if Brinson can actually hit MLB pitching, but we can reasonably assume that he can, based on what the experts say. Whether Brinson is as injury prone as Braun is a greater concern, for me anyways... I think Phillips is a lock to be a 4 WAR player in 2018 if allowed to play 145-150 games or so... They may end up platooning him if he can't hit LHP...
  7. Cole, Archer, Lance Lynn and Cobb are all good solid starting pitchers who, if healthy, will likely put up a 3.75 ERA and 110 or so ERA+ ... i.e. Pitchers who won't be Cy Young candidates but can help a team for sure You just have to be very careful as to the return. I think it is likely that Woodruff, as just one example, can put up similar numbers....
  8. Merrifield is the likely target. Duffy and Herrera are too risky considering the price and injury concerns. I personally would not want to give up on Villar. The talent of Villar is huge, he hit well in the last few months of 2017. The Brewers have inside info about Villar that I of course am not privy to....
  9. Phenomenal? Not exactly. He was pretty good. Based on his career history and the general volatility of relief pitchers anyways, it would be a roll of the dice as to whether Swarzak ever pitches as well as he did in 2017. To answer the OP's question: no, I'm not losing patience. It is a lot of fun to discuss and speculate whenever the Brewers make a move, but what I want is great moves regardless of how soon they happen.
  10. Highly unlikely. One year of Machado? At what cost?
  11. In terms of "selling high": man oh man could they get a lot back for Knebel right now. But I won't beat that horse to death I'm hoping they keep Hader in the bullpen. He looks like an extremely valuable weapon there....
  12. When you see Yelich in a few games here and there the talent definitely jumps out at you... But look at his stats. He is not a superstar. Granted he is only entering his age 26 season, maybe he'll take that next step. So far he's just a good solid 3 or 4 win player. Santana outperformed him offensively last year. Not worth selling the farm for https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/y/yelicch01.shtml
  13. The Brewers have a surplus of outfielders. I'm not convinced that in 2 years Yelich will be better than whichever of our CF prospects wins the job full time (Brinson, Phillips, Harrison etc)
  14. Overpaying for 2 years of a player who has had one great season in his career. OK then
  15. It is only troubling if they don't do a single thing, and even then perhaps they feel they have internal replacements available. Wait and see what they do. I trust Stearns. I'm willing to bet they'll sign someone different who will out perform Swarzak.
  16. Monty - I think that is the thing... We have MiLB pitchers who can come up and be effective out of the pen. As an example, anyone who will say that they knew Knebel would be as great as he was prior to the 2017 season is likely just kidding themselves. In fact the Brewers should consider trading Knebel and getting a king's ransom for him. Just look at what Thornburg brought back. I'm not saying that the Brewers shouldn't sign a free agent relief pitcher, I think they will... But folks getting upset because Swarzak got signed by the Mets might be overlooking how inconsistent most MLB relief pitchers are year to year. Considering that, Stearn's job is to project which players will have breakout years in 2018, not react based on 2017 results. Leave that approach to the Dombrowski's of the world.
  17. Swarzak had a very good year last season. Not elite, but very good. Entering his age 32 season, he's had exactly one very good season. That combined with whatever proprietary evidence the Brewers possess internally has me trusting that it was wise to not try to match the Mets' overpay. Patience, grasshoppers, Papa Stearns is just getting started
  18. 1). Invest significant money in the international market. Sign two of the top available international players, whether that from Japan or the DR Do not trade away any top prospects, unless it is for upgraded pitching Don't give on Villar.
  19. John Smoltz can be such an annoying announcer. We get it, you don't like seeing so many relief pitchers in one game. Maybe stop pushing your agenda and call the game! I hereby apologize to everyone here for ever complaining about Brian Anderson. Buck & Smoltz make Craig Coshun and Jerry Augustine seem like Vin Scully, let alone BA & Rock...
  20. it would be so nice for the brewers if Villar returned to his 2015 self and the brewers could rely him to hit leadoff everyday. 2016 self? Yes. I think Villar hit a lot better from August on. The stats say so... I sensed that Counsell gave up on him
  21. I'm relatively convinced that Nate Orf can hit MLB pitching. I hope he gets the opportunity. Could be a nice little platoon with Sogard until Hiura is ready.... Personally I would go with Villar for 155 games or so at 2B in 2018
  22. Could see Schwarber plus something to the Red Sox for Price.... The Cubs are stuck with less than elite pitching and not enough ammunition via the farm system to trade for great pitching. Not likely to buy their way out of the hole they dug for themselves to win another World Series in the Bryant/Rizzo window
  23. Congrats to Craig! Is this award a reflection completely on Counsell? Or is this the writers still thinking the Brewers suck and Counsell was a miracle worker?
  24. Old Tigers bringing in old manager. That franchise needs a complete rebuild. Not sure if Gardenhire is the right pick for a rebuild.
