  1. As a Baseball fan I think it is great to see Gordon going back to the Royals. Good to have players on the same team for most of their careers.
  2. I would never punt beyond my own 35 yard line. Depending on the makeup of my team I might extend that back 10 yards even. With a strong offensive line you really should be able to average 2.5 to 3 yards per carry, and dink & dunk enough screen passes and pick passes to keep defenses honest. Anyways the evolution of the NFL at this point is somewhat similar to MLB back in Babe Ruth's day when a pitcher with a runner on 3rd still pitched out of the windup, allowing for players to frequently steal home, or the "genius" who thought that the Maury Wills types were leadoff hitters because they were fast.
  3. Someday teams in the NFL will rarely punt. It might not be until my (not born yet) grandchildren are in the old folks home, but at some point the stubborn old monolithic of football coach groupthink will figure out the mathematical probabilities of actually using 4 downs to get 10 yeards instead of 3. I could spend months on end explaining why I prefer Baseball more than Football.
  4. My favorite moment was Rickie Weeks' line drive HR that put a dent in the train in Houston
  5. In a vacuum, I would perhaps agree. However I think it is naive to think that there aren't several players who did Steroids already in the Hall of Fame. I knew a bunch of high school athletes in the late 70's/early 80's that were on steroids. To think that none of the early 80's MLB players were on steroids just doesn't seem logical. Wouldn't shock me in the slightest if it turned out that Biggio & Randy Johnson did steroids. Johnson in particular had that weird spike in effectiveness after the age of 40. Nolan Ryan is another one who wouldn't surprise me at all.... players like Molitor who were on cocaine, you think they never did Steroids too? If you told me that 70% of MLB during Bonds' peak years were on steroids, it wouldn't shock me in the slightest. Now, are we ready to discuss all the amphetamines that Willie Mays & Hank Aaron took? You think that didn't effect performance?. Most people just shrug their shoulders as if it was an extra cup of coffee those guys drank. Mays & Aaron played most of their careers on drugs.
  6. I agree. The potential for injury or a poor season are too high. I would expect that the Brewers would trade Davis shortly after Cespedes, Gordon & Upton are signed.
  7. In general, I think signing international free agents is a way for a small market team like the Brewers to even the playing field a little. You end up getting the player before or during their peak years and you get a chance to seriously increase talent level on a roster. Not sure if this particular pitcher is the one to go after but again in general I do think that international free agents are who the Brewers should focus on with their money. Don't sign MLB free agents, don't extend your own players on the wrong side of 29, draft & develop players and trade them for prospects when they get to their walk year. And sign International free agents. For every $10 million + contract that the Brewers don't make by avoiding the likes of the Aramis Ramirez/Matt Garza types and instead spend that money in the Dominican Replublic & Cuba, the team would be much much better off.
  8. That is difficult to imagine considering the personnel losses they have had and the lack of upgrade in pitching. I like your optimism but I have a hard time seeing where it adds up. I think, considering the age and injury issues with the most important pieces of 2015 (Braun/Lind/Gomez/Lucroy), the Brewers ended up being exactly what they were. Hey I predicted them at 82 wins, too, but like many many others I was wrong. MLB is trending younger. Lucroy & Braun are on the wrong side of their prime, the rest of the roster is at or below average (other than perhaps Davis, speaking strictly in regards to offense) and the Crew plays in a tough division. We'll see what the rest of the offseason has in store but this looks like a 100 loss team, to me.
  9. That is a scary way of thinking. They were, quite literally, a 94 loss team. Is there a particular methodology you are using to say that they were a .500 team in terms of talent? And of course we need to factor in that Gomez, Parra, Rogers, K-Rod, Lind & Fiers are all now gone off of the 2015 team too
  10. Griffey is a no doubter. Piazza should get in, hopefully he does I'm among the few (?) who think Bonds & Clemens should already be in. It wouldn't shock me to see Griffey be the only one who gets in this year
  11. We'll certainly know more in 2018 but the current trend is younger players are more valued. At 29 he may be beginning a decline, or may just have a year or two of peak value before his decline.
  12. Weeks was a great draft pick. Injuries curtailed what was likely a perennial All-Star career.
  13. Braun ranked 32nd in MLB in Defensive WAR among LF's in his MVP year of 2011. Khris Davis ranked 39th among LF's in Defensive WAR last year (minimum 300 at-bats) They are both well below average defenders. Arguably they are brutally poor defenders.
  14. Fields is a plus defender. Struggled hitting in AAA in both '14 & '15. Has a fairly good walk rate but doesn't steal a ton of bases. Had a 1.000 Fielding percentage in 2014. Career .990 Fielding % as a minor league CF Bats left, throws right. He had a really weird reverse split in 2014 where as a LH hitter he couldn't hit RHP (.198) but hit .286 vs LHP in AAA. He hit .302/.370 /.470 vs RHP in AA ball in 2013 Wouldn't shock me to see the Brewers give him a shot. He'll only be 25 next year
  15. Davis & Braun both in the same outfield makes no sense in any sort of new paradigm. Both are below average left-fielders. The old days of trying to fit inefficient defense into the lineup in order to get more HR's is hopefully behind us. Braun & Davis may remain in the same outfield next year as it is just part of the rebuild but I highly doubt they will both be on the roster beyond 2016
  16. Obviously a lot can change prior to June of 2017, but two college players come to mind: Catcher JJ Schwartz of Florida, and Outfielder (and Wisconsin native) Jeren Kendall of Vanderbilt
  17. Some of the players Stearns is bringing in (Broxton & Villar in particular) have the potential to be contributors in 2018/2019. It is not inconceivable for those 2 to make dramatic steps forward in 2016 along with revitalized seasons from Braun, Segura, Lucroy & Gennett. Say all that happens and Davis continues developing, the Crew could have a strong offense. Still doesn't help the pitching though.... The Brewers as currently constituted could be an 85 win team if everything goes right. That is a lot of "if's" though. Another "if", if they trade off Lucroy/Braun/Davis, could clinch a 100 loss season
  18. The "Prince Fielder hit 50 Bombs Deck"? You could take out the bullpens and move the fences way back, rebuilding the bleachers for new bullpens. It would cost a lot of money. Not too many teams have won the World Series in hitters parks in the last 20 years. The only ones I can think of are the Phillies, Red Sox & Yankees, all of whom have huge money for pitching.
  19. Hard to imagine such a hot start unless our pitching staff transforms their abilities. If Nelson/Peralta/Jungmann start pitching like 2015 Greinke, then it could happen. It is difficult enough to make that happen, and even more difficult considering that Miller Park is a launching pad Wonder if Stearns has gone beyond considering moving the fences back to actually approaching Mark A about it. Kinda doubt he has but I would imagine he realizes how much more compatitive the Brewers could be, and how much easier the rebuild would be, if Miller Park was a pitcher's park.
  20. On paper at least it could be the best 1-2-3 in History. Considering that Betances can often go 2 innings, that could mean that most games are over if the Yankees have a lead after 5 innings.
  21. As a Wisconsin Baseball fan it is exciting to see 2 Wisconsin kids, Ben Rortvedt & Gavin Lux, in the Top 50. I actually thought Rortvedt would be in the Top 15-20. I've heard he may go in the 1st Round. Not sure if he will stick at C in the pros, but he has a legit bat. I've seen Cooper Johnson from Illinois play. I've heard scouts talk about how his arm and defense at C are MLB ready right now. Not sure if he'll hit well enough to be a MLB starter though
  22. Pinto hit just .228/.304/.354 in AAA last year and threw out only 20% of baserunners in 2014/2015 combined in AAA. I would think he is just organizational filler, maybe Maldanado's backup if we trade Lucroy
  23. THEN the Brewers will sign him and watch him slowly decline until the wheels completely fall off . No worries. Doug Melvin has retired
  24. I have no doubt he'll put up a 2.95 ERA season with the Cardinals wish that was in blue
