Bartolo Colon is exactly the type of pitcher Doug Melvin would sign if he was still the GM. Thank God he is not! What exactly would be the point of signing a free agent pitcher? The Brewers aren't going to be a playoff team. Why waste money and take away innings from young pitchers who need development?
Gennett was the 36th ranked 2B in WAR in 2015. He is, quite literally, a replacement player. I have no problem with starting a replacement player at 2B in 2016 since it is a rebuilding year, but 2B is a big position of need
Was thrilled for Yost, Cain, Escobar and by default Wade Davis (part of the Odorizzi trade from KC to Tampa Bay) And thrilled that Doug Melvin is no longer the Brewers GM
Didn't Steamer predict that the Royals wouldn't even make the playoffs in 2015?!!! I believe that the game of MLB changes so rapidly that Steamer might be based on a outdated mode, in part.
I really think Sedar helps the Brewers a whole heckuva lot more than he hurts them. I would not exactly point fingers at Ed Sedar. Sedar works very hard at his craft. Tunnell is a true class act and an excellent veteran presence among the pitching coaches staff.
Khris Davis ranked 19th in WAR among LF's in MLB with 400 Plate Appearances or more in 2015. There is potential there. I like that his walk rate went up. He is a liability on defense and his offense would need to significantly improve in 2016 to make up for the defense (in my opinion). In a rebuilding year I suppose it doesn't really matter. If they can increase his perceived "trade value" and trade him eventually to a team that overvalues power (and get a nice return) that would be wonderful longterm. Yes infield defense is more of a priority. If Arcia is ready to take over at SS and they move Segura to 2B that would certainly help the defense. As a fan I have gotten used to the Brewers saying one thing and doing another.
"Khris Davis will be in the line up everyday" does not match up with "Improving defense is a priority." Meanwhile "Braun is doing well after back surgery" is good news if they can trade him
I think the real problem was the front office in LA, not Mattingly. MLB has turned into a young man's game and LA, with their huge payroll, is running players like Utley, Rollins, & A.J. Ellis out there for significant innings
Now that he's facing a team with far superior pitching, Joe isn't looking like as much of a genius anymore I fully expect the Cubs to spend a huge amount of $$$ on free agent pitching this winter
Not quite following that. Estrada's trade value was Lind. 2 years of Lind is more valuable in terms of trade than 1 year of Lind or 0.5 years of Lind. One has to wonder if this was a big point on why our coaches were let go. Tough pill to swallow seeing those guys pitch so well for other teams. Happy for them. But tough to swallow. Yes that was tough to see. Miller Park is not exactly a pitcher's park, but then again neither is Toronto or Texas I sure hope they trade him this winter (I think they will) and not wait as he could get hurt and his value would then be next to nothing.
I know it's always tough to trade starting pitching but imho, Marco Estrada was not going to be the difference maker for the 2015 Brewers experiencing success. Trading him coupled with having a lousy season has opened up some rotation slots for young guys that might actually have a future here and it's not like Lind played badly for us. Let's see what we get back in return for Lind before making a call on who won this deal. That is one (good) way to look at it, but reality is that the 2015 Brewers weren't going to experience success. Estrada should have been traded for a prospect not Lind. But then again such decisions led to a regime change in the Brewers front office, so if I look at it that way I'm thrilled with the trade!
Hindsight is 20/20 but the Blue Jays got the best of this trade so far. Estrada is a free agent after this season though and it remains to be seen what the Brewers get out of Lind next year in terms of production or in a trade.
Similar to how Gord Ash precipitated extra trades with Toronto, I wonder if this means we'll be making a few trades with Tampa Bay in the next few years
Lot of risk taking a pitcher that high. Tons of boom or bust in recent history. Pitchers who were Top 5 Picks since 2010: Jameson Tailon Drew Pomeranz Gerrit Cole Trevor Bauer Danny Hultzen Dylan Bundy Kevin Gausman Kyle Zimmer Mark Appel Jonathan Gray Kohl Stewart Brady Aiken Carlos Rodon Tyler Kolek Dillon Tate Position Players who were Top 5 picks since 2010: Bryce Harper Manny Machado Carlos Correa Kyle Schwarber Byron Buxton Kris Bryant Mike Zunino Nick Gordon Dansby Swanson Alex Bregman Brendan Rogers Kyle Tucker Clint Frazier While I agree it would be awesome to have an ace, lately the players in the Top 5 picks making the biggest impact on their teams have been position players. Last year there was only one pitcher taken in the Top 5, not sure if that is a trend or unique to that draft.
I'm a 3rd Base Coach. I even get paid to do it. We have dozens of fans at our games, however, not tens of thousands. JohnBriggs12 is correct, there is a fine line there. You want to put pressure on the defense, you want to be aggressive
Do we blame Kranitz/Tunnell or do we place blame on the front office, or a little of both? Personally I think Kranitz & Tunnell have done a tremendous job with sub-par talent. I don't have a problem with Stearns cleaning house but I think the team ERA could have been much much worse with lesser coaching
He's blocking Domingo Santana. He's coming off of a 27 HR season so he actually has trade value. His OBP is too low. He absolutely should be traded before his arby years kick in prior to the 2017 season. More than likely he should be traded this offseason
Just the beginning of what will hopefully be sweeping changes in the first year of the David Stearns era Here is the JS Online article, not much additional info http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/330721101.html
