  1. Name one player other than Pete Rose or the PED suspects who was excluded for "character and sportsmanship". You can't, because this witch hunt is a modern invention of angry writers who have never touched a baseball bat. If you think it's legitimate to exclude Barry Bonds from a baseball "Hall of Fame," more power to you, but as a baseball fan I therefore consider it a dumb, ridiculous institution and I think we should stop paying any attention to it sooner rather than later. (P.S. - players have always cheated. People just get scared by PEDs because of the manufactured witch hunt)
  2. Yearly reminder that the entire institution is an irrelevant joke as long as Bonds and Clemens (short list for greatest player and greatest pitcher of all time) are not in it due to petty grandstanding by BBWAA members
  3. He was pretty good in 2014 (316 PA, 1.3 fWAR) and in the two seasons before that, by which I mean "good" for a scrapheap player who will cost us nothing. Last year he was bad (94 PA, -0.5 fWAR), but that may have been due to a .194 BABIP. Another smart pickup who might contribute in CF or as a utility player.
  4. I'm not passing judgment on the story because I simply don't care, but the guy is surely going overboard with the denials in order avoid any potential defamation liability. What he says/denies at this point is meaningless.
  5. Honestly who cares if we lose 100 games? Nobody thinks we're going to compete, so what does it matter. Maybe that's just me though, given I'm one of the few (?) who almost prefers terrible, rebuilding teams. Much more relaxing season as a fan and lots of interest for those of us (as in Brewerfan users) "dedicated" fans.
  6. Projection systems are far from gospel, but Steamer for example projects Pinto to hit just slightly worse than Lucroy. Obviously there's a huge defensive gap, but I don't get the pessimism here. Much more upside than Maldonado (who is a perfectly fine backup, mind you).
  7. Nieuwenhuis has 2.5 fWAR in 693 PA, Schafer has 0.0 fWAR (I'm surprised it's not negative to be honest) in 646 PA. Nieuwenhuis is not very good, but he is at least a MLB caliber hitter and somewhat plausible low-end starter. Logan Schafer is not, he's strictly a defensive sub.
  8. Wow! Pinto was a Baseball Prospectus #56 prospect as recently as the pre-2014 list. Still only 26, wasn't that bad last year. Hope Lucroy is gone and we can see what Pinto does in a full season as starting catcher.
  9. Yes, but the question was whether we should spend more by putting that money into signing international prospects, or by putting it into a SP we don't necessarily need in the hope that he has a great first half and can be traded for prospects. I would argue that $10M (for example) could net a lot more talent on the international market than trading Latos would get us.
  10. Don't you only get so much to spend in that category now? And can't they do both? There are caps but you can blow past them, like the Dodgers or Cubs. They could do both in theory, but not if Mark A only has $X to spend.
  11. Latos is an obvious bounce back candidate if you look at his peripherals. It's not like he's going to be cheap though, so I'm not sure if it's worth the gamble. Would we be better served just spending that $10+M on international prospects?
  12. Count me in for any trade the nets Giolito. I'd doubt they'd move him; Arcia would need to be involved I'd think. Maybe not, but the Nats have a pretty small window while Scherzer is still dominant and before Harper leaves for a $500M contract. Lucroy would overlap nicely with Harper's tenure. Of course, they would have to really love Lucroy (which is entirely possible) to trade Giolito.
  13. C Jonathan Lucroy LF Khris Davis 2B Scooter Gennett for RHP Lucas Giolito 3B Anderson Franco C Spencer Kieboom
  14. The problem with Gennett is that he's a platoon player with no positional flexibility. I don't think a contending team would want to waste a roster spot on him, or in any event they wouldn't give up much in a trade.
  15. A decent haul from the perspective of the Nats system, but are any of those guys even top-100 prospects? Not enough for Lucroy.
  16. Didn't we pass on him in the Rule 5 draft?
  17. Davis is an average major-league corner OF. He's clearly a pretty poor defender, and his offense is extremely streaky. His bat is power over plate discipline (sub-.300 OBP two years ago), so he is more of a bottom-of-the-order hitter. None of that militates against trading him, but what does is that we are in rebuilding mode and are not going to compete for a few seasons. Davis brings nothing to the franchise given the position we are in. He has no further upside and he's only going to start getting expensive. By the time we are competitive again he'll be a free agent or supplanted. There is 0% reason to start Davis over a prospect like Santana. If Stearns has any common sense he will trade Davis this offseason to maximize his value.
  18. Segura is a replacement level SS, and Middlebrooks is more or less a replacement level major-league 3B. He's not exactly Yuni B out there.
  19. 100% agree. I've been baffled as to why anyone would prioritize Davis over Santana on a rebuilding team, especially given that Santana has destroyed AAA, had a huge hot streak out of the gate last year in MLB, and finished with a respectable .768 OPS (Davis = career .809 OPS). Oh yeah, and he's actually a solid defender...
  20. Just glancing at stats and blurbs, Broxton and Rogers seem roughly equivalent, except one is a CF and one is a 1B. Older players in the minors with solid stats for their positions who might be able to claim a MLB starting job. Leads me to believe that Stearns thinks 1B will be easier to fill than CF, either because he wants to play Cecchini there with Middlebrooks at 3B, or because he likes the market for 1B (which does seem pretty solid - plenty of guys like Alvarez who you can sign and hopefully flip if they have a good first half). Supak obviously just a huge bonus in that situation.
  21. I think Peralta still has more value than that.
  22. The Chicago-helium going into the Schwarber hype is hilarious. Eddie Mathews???? Excuse me for being skeptical about a guy with a 30% K-rate (even in the minors). Yankees prospects used to be hyped like this, now it's the Cubs I guess.
  23. To be fair he is only 26. His body type might not age gracefully, and his bat is nothing special but the majority of this contract is his prime. Parra has shown us the volatility of corner outfielder defensive metrics but Heyward has been graded outstanding for awhile now. Best thing to hope for is Cubs tv is a disaster... http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/despite-risks-cubs-eyeing-own-tv-network/ Age is only half the story. I don't care how old you are, it is very difficult to stay a consistent All Star caliber player for the life of a $200M contract. There is a popular notion that if you are putting up 5 fWAR season in your mid-20s you're going to keep doing so well into your 30s. In reality, that makes you a Hall of Fame player, not something I would bet on for anyone.
  24. Good, let the Cubs go all in for a window that overlaps with the Brewers rebuild. Keep on stacking up the albatrosses for 4+ years from now!
