  1. I actually do if Yelich is back to being an All-Star (not quite MVP) caliber hitter. It's a very balanced/deep lineup in that case. Do you think anyone is really overperforming right now? If anything we will get much better once McCutchen/Renfroe start hitting more consistently.
  2. It's so early in the season that this is somewhat circular though, as the "poor" pitching staffs have been poor in large part because the Brewers beat up on them. We tee'd off on Hunter Greene and he just threw most of a no-hitter last night, for example.
  3. Another Williams/Hader doorslam: 6 up, 6 K'd
  4. Cain started bad last year too and picked up the pace in the second half. I think it's hard to displace him internally unless Taylor really starts hitting (which he is not right now) given how good Cain's defense still is. I would love to bring in a clear upgrade like Ramon Laureano though. I also proposed Tyler Naquin in one of the trade rumors threads as a more offense-oriented upgrade.
  5. Laureano is not an elite elite defender in CF like vintage Cain, but he's a plus defender out there with legit one of the best outfield arms in all of baseball. I think Laureano is a fantastic trade target for us and might even be cheaper than what you've proposed, Brewcrew82. I'm not sure I'd give up two of Frelick/Mitchell/Small for him.
  6. I'd love to know if they are being extra careful with Hader due to his recent back issues, or if they just will never use him in a four-out role anymore. No better situation than there against Naquin with his extreme platoon splits.
  7. I feel like it should be an unbreakable rule that you always take a guy out after he walks in a run on pitches nowhere close to the plate ?
  8. Not to toot my own horn, but I never understood the immediate panic over the trade. Lauer had already put up a >2 fWAR season and was a young lefty SP with more team control and upside than Davies. Urias was a genuinely elite prospect (having recently been ranked top 25 in all of baseball) who had just torn up minor league pitching and who the Padres were selling low on after a rough MLB debut because they needed a CF and did not need a SS. Of course it is going even better than expected. I thought Lauer would be a solid #5/6 and did not foresee his breakout with added velocity, and I thought Urias would be a capable starting SS rather than having grown enough as a hitter to be our starting 3B.
  9. This would be such a relief, and honestly that's the kind of player he's being paid to be. The length of the contract reflects his MVP peak, but he's really not making that much per season. Five years from now it might be an albatross regardless, but if he can return to just his Miami form for the next few seasons then we are in great shape.
  10. He's real, and he's spectacular!
  11. All the Urena signing tells is that they like/liked Urena as a possible breakout candidate in the bullpen. You can never have too much pitching, this isn't an either-or as if they had signed a starting 3B to keep another guy in the minors. Honestly I don't think Lindbloom being kept in the minors for the last year has as much to do with the front office not liking him as it does with Houser/Lauer being absurdly good for most of the last year. They haven't needed another starter beyond the Top 5 and Anderson/Ashby, and maybe his poor start to 2021 convinced them that Lindblom pitches better as a starter only.
  12. Lindblom absolutely deserves another shot, in my opinion. I was surprised they moved on from him so quickly in the first place. He was good in 2020 despite an inflated ERA. 10.3 K/9, 3.2 BB/9, 3.88 FIP, He was pretty bad in 16.2 IP at the start of 2021, but even then he kept his strikeouts up (9.2 K/9), and more importantly the control issues that he showed disappeared in the minors, where he was fantastic: 104.2 IP, 10.1 K/9, 2.2 BB/9, 3.10 ERA, 3.17 FIP. He's been even better to start 2022. Keeping him stretched out as a starter for when we need one might counsel in favor of keeping him down for now, but I think he could be great in long relief and in any event he should definitely be back at some point.
  13. He has not been criminally convicted, no, but my point is that MLB just did a massive yearlong investigation with far greater resources than a DA's office would have in preparing a criminal indictment, and the commissioner's office evidently concluded that the allegations were sufficiently proven to hand down an unprecedented 2-year suspension. So it's not all just rumors and hearsay floating around.
  14. I like giving Hader some nights off. Keep his workload down for the postseason.
  15. Having Aaron Ashby as a Swiss army knife all season is going to be huge. This pitching staff is stacked!
  16. Not sure why everyone keeps saying the allegations are "unproven" just because the Los Angeles DA declined to prosecute with respect to one accuser. I guarantee you MLB has far greater resources and did a far greater investigation than any DA office in the country. Like, exponentially greater. This is a multi-billion-dollar institution that knows it will now be facing a massive countersuit from Bauer's team. Knowing Bauer's public persona, I would guess that the punishment is in part so severe because he was uncooperative during the investigation.
  17. Coming into tonight's game, Rowdy Tellez ranked fifth in the majors in xwOBA (.452!!) If he can break out this year and give us a reliable middle-of-the-order bat, watch out
  18. Not a fan of sending Brosseau down, he's been doing his job, but I get it. Just not enough spots. A nice luxury (and one I can't immediately remember) when I am actually upset because the last bench guy on the roster was doing too well to send down. What happens when Urias is ready, a reliever goes down?
  19. I thought Cousins looked fine. 14.6 K/9, 3.33 xERA, 3.19 xFIP even though the bottomline results were middling. We definitely have the luxury of letting him get fully healed up though.
  20. The Red Sox would never trade Devers for a couple years of Woodruff. Those kinds of awards-caliber player swaps do not happen (has such a trade ever happened?) because you only want an elite player if you are trying to compete, and if you are trying to compete you do not want to give up one of the elite players you already have. We could get some elite prospects for Woodruff, but that's too much of a risk when we are extremely competitive this year with a pitching-forward team. Weakening our pitching staff to get a slightly-above-average team offense is a bad strategy imo.
  21. It's early, but my biggest area of concern on an otherwise great team is CF. Hate to say it, but I think Cain is cooked. He can still play solid defense, but I'm not expecting an offensive rebound, and at the very least Taylor is too unreliable to be a regular replacement. I would love to send a mid-range prospect to the Reds for Tyler Naquin. He's a free agent after this year, so should be cheap. The Reds are in the ditch, so should be willing to sell early (even within the division). Naquin is not a great defender but he can credibly play CF, and he has some nice pop as a platoon bat against RHP. We have a fantastic lineup against LHP and could use some more offense against RHP in particular. He doesn't need to be the everyday starter, but can provide an offensive weapon to complement a defense-first CF like 2022 Cain or Taylor. We could send Taylor down to regain his confidence and, if Cain does not rebound at all further into the season, could go with a Naquin/Taylor platoon in CF.
  22. I would just sign Wilson Ramos. He's probably not looking for much at this point in the offseason if you can offer him a guaranteed major league spot to open the season. Unless he's injured?
  23. 8.3 K/9, 3.98 ERA, 4.13 FIP vs. RHB last season. Situational long relief? Keep in mind the expanded rosters to start the season.
  24. Yes, but as I understand it the Dodgers don't have a lot of leverage because now that they've DFA'd him he either has to be traded or goes straight to irrevocable waivers and can be claimed for nothing. The fact that he has an option left but they chose to DFA him suggests they won't be asking much.
