  1. I think we need a 2B/3B in addition to a UTIL guy who can play SS, because somebody needs to start every game at 2B vs LHP, and if you only have one SS/2B then there is no backup SS on those days.
  2. I like Parra a lot, but it depends on the RP. The Will Smith trade worked out pretty well for us, if they can get another RP who is that good (plus salary relief to maybe sign a UTIL) I think it's a good deal.
  3. Melvin says the same thing every time he's interviewed, and it's never true. The bigger concern is that we seem pretty maxed out on payroll, so any moves will have to be via trade and given the overstuffed market there's a good chance simply no desirable trades present themselves.
  4. I could see the Brewers making a surprise bid, like they did with Aoki (a pretty big success). I doubt Kang costs much more than a $3M posting fee and a 3/$12M contract. Something like that. He fills a need as a potential SS/2B/3B bench player (not sure about his splits, but maybe he could platoon with Scooter), and if there's enough promise the Brewers can make him the everyday 3B starting in 2016.
  5. Interesting. Not only was Hector Gomez a top 5 prospect for the Rockies three years in a row (2008, 2009, 2010), but he was actually a Baseball America top-100 prospect in 2008 (#95 overall). I had no idea. Obviously that doesn't necessarily mean much (somebody like Jeremy Hermida was once the #4 overall prospect in baseball), but Hector Gomez is still only 26. Then again, he was embarrassingly bad as recently as 2013, so I don't think he is anything more than AAA depth and SS insurance.
  6. His ERA didn't tank last season, but even if you don't like advanced metrics (he had a 4.68 FIP and negative fWAR), a 4.8 K/9 for a RP is pretty concerning.
  7. Would have to give up more to get Cecchini in that deal. I am not sure who the Red Sox would want but it would probably start with a higher ranked prospect than Jungmann. Now Lohse for Craig and the Red Sox pay about $15m of his contract that would be fine. You think so? I feel like Cecchini is not a top-top prospect (his ceiling is probably an average-ish 3B) and they have no use for him anymore with the Sandoval/Hanley signings. Lohse deserves a nice return.
  8. I would be happy to take a chance on Craig if his inclusion in the deal is treated as partially a salary dump benefiting Boston. 1B/OF Allen Craig (and most or all of his contract) and 3B Garin Cecchini for SP Kyle Lohse?
  9. This was a team that was arguably the best team in the National League for the majority of last season, and which should have made the playoffs if they had played merely average over the last month plus rather than completely horrible. And that's with pretty bad seasons from Braun and A-Ram, our ordinary #3/4 hitters, who could conceivably rebound in a big way (and offset any drop-off from Gomez/Lucroy). I fail to see how this team is not competitive for 2015. Lind is a huge upgrade, in my opinion. Have you seen his numbers versus RHP? It bears repeating that he has been one of the five best hitters in all of baseball vs. RHP over the last two full seasons. That's not a massive upgrade??? I do agree with you though, that Melvin should not be content. The bullpen has some big question marks (not sold on Broxton as closer at all...), and the bench as it stands is very poor again (aside from Parra). At a minimum I think they need to add a 2B/SS who can hit LHP, another above-average utility guy, and a LOOGY for the bullpen. They really need a 1B/OF who can hit LHP as well (like Kyle Blanks), because there's no point in wearing out Lucroy by having him start at 1B on all of his off-days from catching. Trading Lohse or Gallardo to make room in the payroll for some of those pieces would be a good idea.
  10. Setting aside all the politics of the issue involved, Torii Hunter is a total chump for reacting like that. Number one, he's talking to the media, who for once actually did their job and didn't just ask "are you in the best shape of your life?" nonsense. Number two, Hunter has actively endorsed political candidates on this issue. If you're going to start leveraging your baseball fame to make political endorsements, you are opening yourself up to questions about it, sorry.
  11. Blech. I guess $1M and change is not too bad, but I hope it doesn't imply that they're going to give him way too long of a leash if he stinks again.
  12. Forcing Lucroy to play 1B on his days off is a bad idea in my opinion (not to mention the fact that he is one of the best defensive catchers in baseball, all metrics considered) when lefty mashers are so readily available. Sanchez would be a good fit, Kyle Blanks (OF/1B) even more so. In 2013 (for the Pirates, so while in the NL Central) Sanchez had a .428 wOBA vs. LHP (126 PA). The downside is he can only play 1B, but remember that in an extreme pinch Lind is a 1B/OF.
  13. Kemp stinks. Los Angeles would trade Kemp for Paxton/Segura in a heartbeat. It's the other teams that would never consider that laughable trade - especially Milwaukee.
  14. Dodgers acquire: James Paxton from Seattle; Jean Segura from Milwaukee. Mariners acquire: Ryan Braun from Milwaukee. Brewers acquire: Matt Kemp from Los Angeles; Brad Miller from Seattle. Hahahaha...
  15. Kyle Blanks (DFA'd in the wake of this trade) would be a great option for Milwaukee as a 1B/OF who can hit LHP but who is also a decent bench piece in games vs. RHP when Lind is starting. Then again the Brewers (I believe) passed on him for nothing last season when they had Overbay/Reynolds at 1B so doubtful there is much interest this time around.
  16. I wouldn't mind them taking a chance on Delino DeShields Jr. as the weak side platoon partner for Scooter. In his minor league splits he hits LHP about .50 OPS points better than RHP, so he fits the platoon, and even if he's not great next year it brings in another high upside prospect into the organization. If we go out and get a quality super-sub then DeShields would only be seeing a couple hundred PA all season and thus would be easy to stash. *Edit* In the Rule 5 draft, that is. Also not a non-tender candidate.
  17. If Tomas is an elite bat like Abreu (big if, obviously) then I could see them competing with a 1-2 of Goldschmidt/Tomas. And then you have Trumbo, who... hits HR I guess... Second-worst team ERA in the NL last season though. Hellickson not much of an upgrade.
  18. If I were a player getting voted in I would publicly decline on the grounds that it is embarrassing to be in a "Hall of Fame" that Barry Bonds is not in. (I'm none of the players listed though, sadly...)
  19. I would much rather have Cecchini than Middlebrooks and since the Red Sox just signed two 3B for some reason, he should be expendable. He's not that exciting though, would just give us the promise of 5-6 years with an average-ish 3B. Which would be a great return for someone like Gallardo.
  20. In case anyone is interested, unofficial ranking of NL Central prospects from Nick Faleris's BP chat: 1 - Addison Russell (SS, CHC) 2 - Kris Bryant (3B, CHC) 3 - Robert Stephenson (RHP, CIN) 4 - Jorge Soler (OF, CHC) 5 - Albert Amora (OF, CHC) 6 - Stephen Piscotty (OF, STL) 7 - Marco Gonzales (LHP, STL) 8 - Tyler Glasnow (RHP, PIT) 9 - Jameson Taillon (RHP, PIT) 10 - Jesse Winker (OF, CIN) 11 - Josh Bell (1B/OF, PIT) 12 - Alex Reyes (RHP, STL) 13 - Kyle Schwarber (C, CHC) 14 - Michael Lorenzen (RHP, CIN) 15 - Orlando Arcia (SS, MIL) 16 - Tyrone Taylor (OF, MIL) 17 - Billy McKinney (OF, CHC) 18 - Pierce Johnson (RHP, CHC) 19 - Gleyber Torres (SS, CHC) 20 - Jack Flaherty (RHP, STL)
  21. OK, we'll look at platoon splits. LaRoche had 21 HRs, a .390 OBP & an .891 OPS vs RHP in 2014, which is better than what Lind put up, especially in terms of HR power. So if you sign LaRoche and had to platoon him like they will Lind, he's still better than Lind. ??? Lind hit .354/.409/.533/.942 against RHP last season, and .309/.385/.539/.924 against RHP the season before. Quite simply the only thing LaRoche offers is that he is merely bad instead of unstartable against LHP. And that's not even a benefit, it's a disadvantage, because it leads the manager to start a terrible 1B against LHP rather than doing the smart thing and using a platoon.
  22. LaRoche hit .204/.284/.336/.620 against LHP last season. That might be passable enough that a lazy team can get by without strictly platooning him, but to me that's still a 1B who has no business starting against LHP, and thus is functionally no different than Lind. LaRoche has more HR and WAR over the last three seasons because he had much more playing time, since Lind was injured over that period whereas LaRoche's major injury was 2011 when he missed almost the entire season. Plus, WAR is misleading with Lind because Toronto was still starting him regularly in the OF, where his defense is quite terrible.
  23. Far superior defense, much better OBP, better overall hitting. A better chance of durability. I suppose it does depend on who platoons with Lind, however there is no reason why you couldn't also do a soft platoon with LaRoche LaRoche, career = -1.9 UZR/150 at 1B Lind, career = -4.0 UZR/150 at 1B LaRoche, 2012-2014 = .366 OBP vs. RHP (.364 wOBA) Lind, 2012-2014 = .380 OBP vs. RHP (.386 wOBA) LaRoche, 2012-2014 = .346 OBP overall (.347 wOBA) Lind, 2012-2014 = .351 OBP overall (.355 wOBA) LaRoche, 2011-2014 = 489 G, 2000 PA (35 years old entering next season) Lind, 2011-2014 = 457 G, 1734 PA (31 years old entering next season)
  24. Interested to hear why some think LaRoche will outperform Lind and/or a well-managed Lind platoon. In my mind the only advantage LaRoche offers is that he is merely poor versus LHP, whereas Lind sort of needs to be platooned, but really I don't see any other metric where LaRoche is better.
  25. Agreed. Am I missing something about the difficulty of making a move like replacing Hunter Morris with Cravy on the 40-man? Even if the organization hasn't given up on Morris yet, the chances of a team picking him up as a 1B/DH and him sticking all season are virtually nil. With MLB-potential RP there is always a chance someone will stash them at the back of their bullpen.
