  1. [sarcasm]Don't worry, if/when Braun hits 40 HR next season, Olney will pen a thoughtful analysis of the return of Braun's power and apologize for this his good faith mistake with piece. A tough investigative journalist like Olney is nothing if not fair.[/sarcasm]
  2. Surprisingly poor return for San Diego. Even in his down seasons Headley is an above-average 3B because of his defense. I guess you're just getting a couple months of him, but still. I would be love for the Brewers to move A-Ram to 1B and pursue Headley this offseason if this foretells the kind of contract he's going to be available for.
  3. Hard to believe people actually pay money for the privilege of reading Buster Olney's thoughts on anything.
  4. Love hearing these insights, thanks Josh! Looking forward to seeing JJ pitch again for Milwaukee.
  5. I don't remember, but how did we end up getting Jeffress back again? His numbers with Toronto last season were great. (Really his numbers have been great everywhere but Kansas City).
  6. I've only been following it in passing, but my understanding is they offered $6.5M, then they found the UCL issue, then according to Casey Close they came back and offered him like $3.1M (whatever the minimum is that they had to offer to get a pick next year), until the day of the signing deadline when they upped their offer back close to $5M. Seems pretty shady to me. If they had gone straight to $5M after discovering the UCL issue then I bet a deal would have gotten done.
  7. The Astros look pretty bad to me. They were trying to low-ball Aiken and use their superior bargaining position to force him into accepting (because hey, what high school kid isn't going to take a multi-million dollar deal) so they could save money and/or spread their bonus pool to other players, and it blew up in their face. Jeff Hoffman got over $3M and he's having full-blown TJ surgery, but Aiken is worth half as much as he was originally offered because of some medical abnormality that may or may not even be an issue? Seems insulting/manipulative if I'm the player. I suspect the Astros front office just handled it poorly and burned all of their bridges with Aiken and Casey Close. Maybe if they had dropped to $5M right off the bat (rather than going back up to $5M as a last resort) a deal might have happened.
  8. I was surprised to see that Ryan Braun has the 6th highest wOBA among NL outfielders (and one of those ahead of him is Seth Smith, who I think has had somewhat of a platoon role?). The rest are legit MVP-discussion players: McCutchen, Stanton, Puig, and Gomez. Pretty good for a guy who's been battling injuries. Though I'm glad Braun is the caliber of player where that level of performance is considered disappointing.
  9. Melvin should target a package of Garrett Jones + Steve Cishek.
  10. Assuming the Brewers could absorb his salary, in all honesty I would rather have healthy Cliff Lee than David Price. Of course, it's unclear how healthy Lee is right now.
  11. Building a package around Nelson would make a lot of sense. The Brewers are in pole position for a playoff run but they need a front-end starter, and Cliff Lee is one of the most reliable in the game. I would have zero qualms about trading Nelson+ for Lee. Would prefer not to trade anybody from the next wave of high-upside prospects in the low minors though (like Coulter/Arcia/Taylor/Diaz/Medeiros/Gatewood/Harrison), so not sure how much Philadelphia would want.
  12. Even though the Astros aren't in the NL Central anymore, I still delight in seeing them flounder.
  13. Even Weird Al is mocking the Cardinals now! (And our old friend the Morans guy) 1:13
  14. I think realistic/likely goals are: (1) Braun/A-Ram make up the difference for the inevitable drops in performance from Gomez/Lucroy. (2) The pitching staff has an unspectacular but solid second half. They were pitching above their heads to start the season, but if all five pitch like #3's (totally doable), then that should be enough to hold on. (3) Roenicke shows a willingness to ride the hot hand if K-Rod or another back-end reliever starts to collapse/implode down the stretch.
  15. I think it's time we give Melvin some credit for being a good evaluator of horrible players. Lyle Overbay = -0.2 fWAR, 199 PA (Bad) Corey Hart = -0.6 fWAR, 187 PA (Worse) Kendrys Morales = -0.8 fWAR, 138 PA (Worst) Ok, so he missed on Juan Francisco, but still...
  16. I don't know about the Brewers in general, but a customary big second half from A-Ram should help. He's maybe the most notorious second-half player in baseball (as in, he has huge first-half/second-half splits), so him heating up plus Braun rebounding could be huge.
  17. Gomez is a punk, Scooter is a runt. They both went down to Berlin, joined the Ice Capades. And oh, I don't know why.
  18. I'm weirdly not that upset. Maybe it's just me, but not only did I never expect them to do as well as they did this season (so far), but even when they had an amazing record it just never seemed like they were that good. I never stopped waiting for the other shoe to drop and now it finally has. Makes it much more palatable going into the All-Star break to step back and say: this is a so-so team that was somehow handicapped one of the best records in baseball through >1/2 the season, and now they still have a solid chance of making the playoffs (where anything can happen) even just by blundering through the second half.

  20. Melvin needs to get on the phone!!! I've said it before and I'll say it again: This team is only a starting first baseman, a starting shortstop, two backup outfielders, a backup utility guy, a few back-end relievers, and four starting pitchers away from being a playoff-caliber team!
  21. On the bright side, Thiago Silva now looks like the greatest/most important player in the universe given Brazil's performance without him.
  22. I think it was this? (He doesn't do a very good job of it) http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/744995/MolinaEyes.gif.opt_medium.gif IIRC, T-Plush had called them the "crying birds" on Twitter.
  23. Oh Gods of Baseball, let slip the dogs of injury (in the vicinity of the Cardinals/Reds). For the Brewers stink, and shall not win the NL Central otherwise.
  24. I see absolutely zero to like about Ramirez other than the fact that he had a passable AAA/MLB season a couple years ago. He hasn't even been highly regarded from a prospect standpoint. Why exactly would we trade Marco Estrada (or even somebody like Gindl) for this guy other than the fact that he's relatively young? (Mariners fans want Taylor, Haniger, or Roache? Puh-lease...)
