  1. http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/rodrial01.shtml Ok, but Alex Rodriguez was a teenager with barely any professional experience, and was an elite defensive shortstop...
  2. Talk to me a year from now. I think Taveras will be one of the best hitters in the National League, and I don't think it will take him very long to get there. Come on, Wily. Settle down, big guy. No more freebies. I know it's a tiny sample size but I don't know how many players have been so horrible to start their careers and ended up turning it around and living up to their prospect hype. Here's hoping he's Corey Patterson #2.
  3. Maybe St. Louis should have traded for Parra, not Milwaukee Oscar Taveras - .239 wOBA (105 PA) Logan Schafer - .247 wOBA (119 PA)
  4. Why the heck are you letting Wily swing there?? Just have him do the old Ben Sheets watch-three-pitches and leave the bases loaded for Gomez.
  5. Honestly, this is an easy way to immediately improve the team in both 2014 and 2015, and I don't understand why they don't do it.
  6. Holliday/Jay/Bourjos/Taveras is a really pitiful outfield, given the way Taveras has been incapable of hitting major league pitching.
  7. Good news for anybody hanging on to a #26 Manny Parra jersey! (Close enough)

  9. That was 260 PA and the only time in Braun's career that he hasn't destroyed the ball. The same season he also put up a .956 OPS at AA. Ryan Braun was also a top 10 draft pick, and was universally considered a top-50 prospect in all of baseball by 2006. Mitch Haniger is not a great prospect...
  10. I'm not sure a straight platoon is in order, because I wouldn't want to mess with Davis too much (who actually has been quite solid), and since Parra is having a down season at the moment, but I did some cocktail napkin math: Parra career v. RHP = .286/.335/.425/.760, .327 wOBA [+11.0 UZR/150 in LF] Davis career v. LHP = .294/.345/.632/.977, .418 wOBA [-2.5 UZR/150 in LF] If we assume 1/3 of PA against LHP, 2/3 against RHP, and just applying those weights to the above numbers (like I said, far too simplistic most likely), you get a combined line of: .288/.339/.494/.833, .357 wOBA [+6.5 UZR/150 in LF] Closest full-season stat line I could find to that was Alex Gordon in 2012, when he had a .357 wOBA and +7.3 UZR for a season fWAR of 5.6
  11. I don't think you can even come close to comparing Dykstra to Haniger, I think that is a very big stretch... How so? 38th overall pick (Haniger) versus 54th overall pick (Dykstra). Going off John Sickels rankings, he had Dykstra #9 in the system, and Haniger #7 in an arguably much more shallow system, both C+ prospects. Neither had very impressive minor league numbers. Plus, Haniger isn't married to Meadow Soprano.
  12. Tampa Bay's somewhat confusing return suggests to me that they wanted MLB or near-MLB players back, and not just elite prospects to rebuild with. Maybe Nelson fits the bill there, but if they were asking for other MLB pieces I'm glad a trade didn't happen.
  13. Great trade for Tampa Bay! It's a small sample size - only one tenth of a season at 52 PA - but Nick Franklin has been pretty impressive this season with a .363 OBP! (Wait... that's his OPS...?)
  14. I'm a little late to the party, but I think this is a great move. You have to evaluate defense with a few seasons' worth of defensive metrics, and Parra is an elite defender that brings a ton of value just with his glove. Last season he was a 4.6 fWAR player. I mean, come on, who cares about his 2014, that is an outstanding return for Mitch Haniger. This reminds me a lot of the Nyjer Morgan trade, and I think that worked out pretty well for Milwaukee. Who is not excited to see the combined defensive prowess of Parra + Gomez?? *Edit* Btw, Haniger has a .316 OBP at AA with 19 BB versus 41 K, I don't really see how you can compare him even to Michael Brantley who was not an elite prospect (Brantley's worst season in the low minors he had a .386 OBP with more walks than strikeouts...). Hanger is a solid prospect but nothing special until he proves otherwise. Kind of like Cutter Dykstra when we traded him for Morgan.
  15. Apparently Cespedes can become a free agent after 2015. So Boston really only got a competitive balance pick and one year of a decent outfielder. Not a great return compared to 6 years of a high-end prospect or two.
  16. Keep in mind Nelson for Price also dramatically improves the team for 2015 as well. Gomez, Braun, and Lucroy are all in the tail end of their primes, most likely, so need to make bold moves to compete in the next couple years. After that there are probably going to be down years until the next generation of prospects comes up. Nelson is sort of a "lost generation" of Brewers prospects - there's nobody else following in his footsteps for a few years or more.
  17. The original rumor was that the players they are discussing are Nelson/Coulter/Thornburg, but I actually wonder if Milwaukee wouldn't be throwing in the competitive balance pick too. Otherwise seems like a low return giving the number of teams interested in Price.
  18. Not that Nelson isn't valuable, but isn't his realistic ceiling basically a workhorse #3/4? I'd love to have 6 years of that kind of pitcher, but we're not trading a future ace here, and we would be getting 1.5 years of a legit ace. Honestly, we traded a much higher-upside prospect (at the time) in Brett Lawrie and that was just for boring Shaun Marcum. Coulter looks promising too but setting aside his impressive 2014, remember that he wasn't even deemed worthy of the BA Top 10 coming into this season. No brainer trade to me.
  19. Nelson/Coulter/Thornburg is really cheap for Price. I would do that instantly.
  20. Gomez/Braun/Lucroy 0-for-12 is not a recipe for success.
  21. Yeah that one brief, fairly restrained press conference he gave that one time was really quite outrageous. :roll eyes *Edit* My theory is that Braun is the most reviled 100% just because he is perceived as a cocky fratboy/prettyboy kind of guy. (JimH5, you're allegation of him "preening" seems telling, what does that even mean in this context?) I really don't even think that reputation is totally fair, but if he looked different and had a different personality I guarantee you the media would be more forgiving. Not that he's a Hall of Famer, but Melky Cabrera went so far as to create a fake website and a bunch of ridiculous lies to avoid his suspension, and nobody seems to hate him. All Braun did was seize upon legitimate procedural blunders in the chain of custody of his sample to create reasonable doubt and argue his case at an arbitration hearing. The media blew it out of proportion probably because somebody like Buster Olney hated guys like Braun back in college.
  22. Oops, just created a new thread about Carp though I guess it fits in this Red Sox thread too. I agree though, Carp is a perfect fit for what the Brewers need right now. He doesn't even have to bounce back to be an upgrade.
  23. According to the Boston Globe via MLBTR, 1B/OF Mike Carp has officially requested a trade from the Red Sox: http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2014/07/mike-carp-requests-trade.html I feel like he is a perfect target for the Brewers: He's left-handed, he can platoon at 1B with Reynolds and can serve as a bench bat and fourth outfielder otherwise, he is a buy-low candidate, and the Brewers have allegedly already been scouting the Red Sox. Last season Carp hit .296/.362/.523/.885 in 86 games, and his disappointing 2014 season has still been better than Lyle Overbay's (both overall and vs. RHP), and while he is not a great defender in LF over his career he appears adequate at 1B. ZiPS projects him to hit .252/.323/.423 over the rest of the season, which is a huge upgrade over Overbay and/or Schafer, and a change of scenery might just spark him to replicating some of his 2013 form. I see zero reason not to try to trade for Carp ASAP.
