  1. Regardless of whether one (inaccurately) thinks 3B is overall harder than 2B, I don't see how people could have watched Hiura last season and not come to the conclusion that his primary issue was in making the athletic plays that you have to make at 2B. His arm strength may not be elite but it was fine.
  2. Ah yes, I forgot that Keston Hiura is incapable of throwing a baseball (and also cannot hit fastballs!)
  3. What do you even mean? Hiura, the guy who is currently our starting 2B?
  4. Villar is an anomaly. Some of this may come down to the unique abilities of individual players, so for all I know moving Hiura in particular wouldn't work, but in general 3B is easier. There are guys throughout the league who are lumbering 3B/1B types that in no way could ever play 2B. Heck, even Jesus Aguilar played passable 3B in an emergency.
  5. Wait, Hiura at 3B. Pretty sure he would have a shot at worst defender in MLB history. He can’t play 2B and struggles making throws to 1B. Across the diamond? Oh my. :roll eyes Highly doubt he would be the "worst defender in MLB history" and from my perspective his arm has not been his biggest problem at 2B. 3B is down the defensive spectrum from 2B in my view.
  6. Pretty sure Jamie Dimon is below replacement level: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jamie_Dimon#London_Whale He's the kind of billionaire CEO/shortstop that you reluctantly take in a trade because you really want Zack Greinke.
  7. I feel like 2B is an easier position to field compared to 3B Not sure about that, but in any event I also wouldn't be shocked if they moved him to 1B. His bat will play anywhere, he was by most metrics pretty bad defensively last year, and they are trying to maximize their changes of winning now. (Let me now preempt the 1000 posters who will now jump in and explain to me that 1B isn't "easy" and that Hiura is too short, etc., by noting that I'm not advocating any of these just saying it's possible)
  8. If he was the same pitcher he would be far out of our price range. I do think that winning a Cy Young at any point in one's career nullifies any Jeff Suppan comparisons, as others were making
  9. I think it's much more likely that they are planning to move Hiura off 2B than they are going to trade him. (I didn't think his defense there looked as bad as some did.) I know his arm isn't his strongest attribute but I don't see why he couldn't move to 3B full time.
  10. Well nobody suggested it was likely. I'm talking purely about upside. Both have had runs of dominance and runs of sketchy 4.00+ xFIP peripherals. Part of why Verlander is a Hall of Fame talent is because he had a resurgence after falling back to Earth for a few years (and because he has been unusually durable thought his long career, but that's a separate issue). If you want a guy you can dream of putting up 200+ IP seasons with a sub 3.00 ERA, the only pitchers available this offseason are/were Cole, Strasburg, and Bumgarner. Bumgarner is still relatively young and one could at least argue that his fall from dominance is due to a few years of injuries that he is now on the other side of. Fair point above about Ryu having similar upside, but he's obviously unlikely to be as durable. 100 million+ for dreams of upside on 30 year olds is not something teams with limited financial capabilities should be doing. I think you'll find that nobody in this thread is advocating for signing Bumgarner.
  11. Rick Porcello won a Cy Young even more recently than Kuechel. Stuff changes. Rick Porcello had a 3.89 xFIP the season he won (for having 22 wins), and Keuchel has never stopped being a 3+ WAR pitcher. Sometimes stuff says the same.
  12. Dallas Keuchel won a Cy Young just a few years ago, y'all acting like he's chopped liver!

  14. I think the Nats probably deliberately overpaid to lock in Strasburg as their all-time franchise player. Not sure this affects the open free agent market much.
  15. Steamer likes him as a Saladino/Perez replacement: (projected) .303 wOBA, 86 wRC+, .256/.290/.434/.724, with decent defense
  16. Love it! And we needed a LHRP in any event. Mark this post for when Claudio proves all the jabronies wrong and returns to his 2016-17 form as a dominant deadballer. I wonder if given his contact-heavy approach Claudio was uniquely affected by whatever tampering MLB did with the ball last year?
  17. Had another thread on this, but trading for Joc Pederson and then signing CJ Cron is my dream scenario. vs RH 1B - Braun LF - Peterson vs LHP 1B - Cron LF - Braun
  18. The guy I want is 1B Roberto Ramos from the Rockies. He's absolutely mashed throughout his minor league career, but apparently scouts think he's a quad-A player. Didn't they say the same thing about non-prospect Khris Davis who just never stopped hitting?
  19. I think Cabrera is underrated as well and wanted him at the trade deadline last season (before he put up huge numbers for the Nationals...), but he is 34 and might cost more than Flores. I'd be happy with Cabrera on a one-year deal to man 3B though. For what it's worth, Flores is not devoid of power, over a full season he has been on roughly a 23 HR pace. 2017-2019 splits: Wilmer Flores - 1411 PA, .333 wOBA, 110 wRC+, .278/.325/.462/.787, 23 HR per 600 PA Asdrubal Cabrera - 1646 PA, .334 wOBA, 107 wRC+, .267/.336/.445/.781, 20 HR per 600 PA Eric Thames - 1288 PA, .355 wOBA, 118 wRC+, .241/.343/.504/.848, 34 HR per 600 PA Mike Moustakas - 1930 PA, .340 wOBA, 110 wRC+, .258/.318/.498/.816, 34 HR per 600 PA If you will only be satisfied by a starting 3B who is going to hit 30+ HR, you may be sorely disappointed next season. Thames and Moustakas are better hitters, but Thames is a 1B who needs to be platooned, and Moustakas just signed a $64 million contract.
  20. As long as he never starts a game (impossible with CC), and never pinch hits. He is only useful as a defensive replacement LATE in games. That seems a little harsh. We're definitely in trouble if he's a regular starter for us, but he did put up passable offensive numbers throughout his Brewers tenure: 796 PA, .318 wOBA, 93 wRC+, .222/.314/.422/.736 That's not bad for a defensive specialist fifth outfielder. Very similar profile to what the mighty Victor Robles produced for the Nationals last season, actually. Keon's 2019 season was a nightmare, of course, but that's why we are getting him on a minor league deal for nothing.
  21. My only criticism of their handling of Guerra is that I think he could have been useful depth as a starter. But since they transitioned him full time to a RP, I'm fine letting a guy with a 4.83 xFIP last year walk. Good luck to Junior!
  22. I'm not a huge Keuchel fan but I'd definitely take him at that price.
  23. Taylor is definitely the front runner, but he could always have a bad Spring Training. Corey Ray needs to repeat AAA after the season he had, I think he's only on the 40-man because they think he can still develop and didn't want to lose him to another team.
  24. In 2018 for the Brewers he was worth +1.1 fWAR in just 51 games despite hitting .179 and striking out 31.5% of the time, the bat is not the draw here (although he does give HR pop off the bench). No downside to this signing, and I wouldn't be shocked if he makes the roster as a fifth outfielder over Tyrone Taylor and Corey Ray. Yelich-Cain-Broxton defensive outfield of death
  25. Two thoughts: 1 - David Price would help the rotation, but he is owed so much money still that it would be difficult for the Brewers to take on that salary unless they were overwhelmed by a package with Rafael Devers or somebody, which the Red Sox obviously are not going to do. 2 - If the Dodgers sign Rendon, we should be burning up their phone trying to snag Justin Turner on the last year of his contract.
