  1. This is fair, but any franchise also has to balance winning now with winning long-term. Both Shaw and Hiura are potential long-term assets for us. I'm guessing few of us would trade Brice Turang for a 1.0 WAR upgrade somewhere else.
  2. There's no bigger Hiura fan than me, and I don't really see the issue with this move other than the empty symbolism of him getting called up and staying up. Shaw has a ton of value for the franchise if he can rebound. It's worth giving him another chance now that he has had time to clear his head, and if the Mayor of Ding Dong City returns we will all be celebrating. But you can also bet he will be on a short leash and if he continues to struggle will be gone. Hiura could be back fairly soon even without an injury.
  3. I'd like to see them take Michael Busch, who Fangraphs has going to us in their latest mock. A bat-first 1B is a good strategy for betting on a possible star this low in the first round.
  4. We lost to the dodgers because we couldn’t hit their pitchers. Period. Our pitching, especially our pen almost won the series despite our lack of offense. Again, im confident Stearns will add a quality disciplined bat, hopefully that will make a difference in the playoffs. We lost because the bats got ice cold at the wrong time, not because of the composition of the team. Obviously payers like Yelich, Cain, Moustakas are more than capable of hitting Dodgers pitching.
  5. All depends on what the Brewers scouting department thinks, because his stats certainly are not inspiring for a 1B-only prospect, even if he is still young. If we are giving up a big prospect haul, I'd rather target an established veteran under team control for a shorter period of time. (Would San Francisco consider shopping Brandon Belt?)
  6. The reason it's a hard decision is because Aguilar and Shaw are under team control for several more seasons and we have every reason to see if they can rebound.
  7. Himself for not trying to improve sooner? The coaching staff for not helping him? I sent Arcia a letter a few seeks into the season telling him he should start trying to improve. He sent me a response "Thanks I never thought of that!" plus an autographed bat. Guess it's working.
  8. This is fairly miscellaneous so I'm putting it here: as Caleb Smith continues his transformation into an ace, I forgot that the Brewers grabbed him in the Rule 5 draft as recently as December 2016 and then sold him the same day to the Cubs (who later returned him to the Yankees).
  9. Shaw has been brutal overall, but in some ways better than you think. Aside from his strikeouts being way up (which could be a result of him pressing), his batted ball and hard-hit percentages are not significantly different from the last couple years. That lines up with his splits vs. RHP, where he has been mediocre (.284 wOBA), but within the realm of being a bit unlucky over just 120 PA. The problem is that he is basically Ben Sheets against LHP (.098 wOBA !!) and yet Craig has let him accrue almost a quarter of his season PA against LHP (34 of 154). How did that happen with Perez on the team to platoon with him? I know you can never have a perfect platoon where a guy faces 100% his favored pitching, but if Shaw was not facing so many LHP (almost as many as if there was zero platoon effect) then his overall season would not look so horrendous and I think we'd all have more confidence in his HR/FB% going up and his numbers rebounding.
  10. Imagine if Shaw and Aguilar hadn't collapsed this season? Could have had 4/5 of our infield on pace for 30+ HR season, and oh yeah throw in Christian Yelich in the outfield.
  11. Are there any draft prospects who could be rushed to the majors this season (probably as RP)? Not a crazy strategy at #28 if so.
  12. Hiura is one of the top prospects in the world and had an .800+ OPS like two days ago.
  13. Nelson has pitched a grand total of 19.0 IP in real games over the last two years. Keeping him in the minors a little longer has nothing to do with service time or him not being good enough to push Anderson back to the bullpen.
  14. Probably not, because we'd have to dump Aguilar first which I still think is very unlikely.
  15. Any Brewers-specific draft rumors, rather than rehashing the (extremely wrong) argument that trading for Claudio was foolish? Seems awfully quiet this year with the draft just over a week away. Though I guess picking as low as we are there's really no way of predicting who we are targeting.
  16. Really? .260/.376/.902 36 runs. 13 HR 34 rbi 29 bb. 36 ks Ops+ > 146 Edwin Encarnacion ^^ 29 walks and 36 ks = professional hitter ^^ 2017-2019 stats: Edwin Encarnacion, .362 wOBA Eric Thames vs. RHP, .366 wOBA Danny Valencia vs. LHP, .353 wOBA (This is actually an unfriendly data sample for Valencia, whose has a career .371 wOBA vs. LHP) Meanwhile, Encarnacion is a DH-only player who shouldn't really be playing in the field.
  17. Good for him, but I don't see it changing anything. He's in a unique situation where he was a top-10 pick that missed out on his payday and now his consensus value has tanked, so clearly a Japanese team still sees his potential on the higher end of things.
  18. If we are permanently giving up on Aguilar, which is what this trade would necessitate roster-wise, then we could get better production than Encarnacion by signing Danny Valencia for nothing and platooning him with Thames.
  19. I just went and counted. Guess how many 95.5+ mph pitches Hiura has swung through so far in his lengthy MLB career, which has given rise to this narrative? A grand total of 4
  20. lol, Brewerfan.net has decided Hiura can't hit fastballs? Anyway, congrats on the first homer, kid!
