  1. I've used bankingmyway.com to research rates for different products. It's usually fairly accurate and updated. I'm not sure where you live, nodak, but there are quite a few 6-month CDs in Wisconsin that are paying 2% or better. The credit union I work for has one at 1.7% APY if you have five services with us (1.45% if not). 0.20% is incredibly low. Our savings accounts here are better than that.
  2. My family and I went this past Sunday and were a little disappointed. Had the staff enforced the line, I'm sure a solid majority of the people there could have gotten everyone on the team. The players went to the concourse for the autograph session. One of our board members here sent me an awesome Josh Prince/Brett Lawrie photo and while my son wanted all the players (he ended up with four) I just wanted that picture signed. Fortunately, Josh saw the picture, loved it, and reached out so he could sign it for me. In fact, he then asked "would you like me to get Brett to sign it, too?" "That would be great!" says I. He signed it and turned around, but Brett had already bolted for the locker room.
  3. I was wondering the same thing. He's a big Rickey Henderson fan, right? Maybe he is spending some time in Cooperstown?
  4. Four more gored today at Pamplona. No fatalities, but at least the bulls were trying. . . Classic. My boy (pictured) last night ran his "career" (10 innings) K/BB ratio to 22/4. He did give up his 5th hit, though, so naturally there was no dessert at dinner.
  5. Besides the typical baseball collecting (which I enjoy immensely), my "me" time is mostly spent researching and writing about baseball history, particularly as it relates to my home town of Eau Claire. I've been published in a couple of SABR books and even got a book deal of my own a few years ago. I'm about half way through a follow up book--this one will likely be self-published. In 2035 or so, at the pace I've been going at lately.
  6. Is the bat a Little League model? If so, value takes a nose dive generally. I used to collect bats and gloves pretty heavily, but have tailed off in the last few years. Pure guesses at this point, but an adult model in nice shape could probably bring $30-35 and a kids model maybe $15-20.
  7. I liked the fact that he corrected Rome on the "Moneyball" reference, asking him to look at an old Sports Illustrated with the Ted Williams "The Art of Hitting" article. Excellent interview. Macha made sure his point of view came across, but he did it in a non-condescending manner. Refreshing!
  8. He can't afford to go to the games anymore. That's twice in the last five minutes that I've had to do the fake cough bit to cover up laughter.
  9. Getting an actual fielder's glove is quite a challenge since the players don't go through them like they do batting gloves and bats (even so, the bats and batting gloves are not necessaily "plentiful" in the secondary market). I'd say the $100 was a steal for the Cameron glove. Heck, if you went to a sporting goods store to pick out a new glove with similar quality I doubt you could touch one for that price.
  10. I agree--I think it will be Lawrie with Dykstra in second. The fans are Brewer-crazy. But I'll vote for Aumont, too.
  11. Now I know what the Holy Grail looks like. Simply amazing work!
  12. I remember watching that HBO piece, wondering how in the world a guy who, let's be honest, isn't the brightest in the world could just pick up trading and be some sort of genius. Just a bunch of smoke and mirrors, probably. The one analyst "nailed" it--he just reports the wins and lets the losses slide. It's a long article, but a good one. Unfortunately, I have this incredible urge to use the word "dude" excessively now. Does everyone he's associated with talk like that? I expected his mother to say "Dude gave me stress..."
  13. Looks like Jordan will make his major league debut tonight against the Braves. I, too, began following him when he was in Eau Claire.
  14. Wisconsin is piggy-backing their starters, at least for the early part of the year (I don't recall if it is permanent or not). Scarpetta started and Nieves came in in relief on opening night.
  15. A month or so ago, in an effort to take my son's attention away from Pokemon, I asked my brother about his extra Strat game and he agreed to get it over to me. He also included a bunch of cards he had purchased or had from his many years of playing Strat. We were finally able to connect over Easter. Since the time I suggested Strat to my son, though, we were introduced to Topps Attax. It's an extremely simple game that can be played in literally a couple of minutes, but it has at least some strategy involved. I have a feeling the simple "battle"-type Attax game will reign supreme over a somewhat complicated (at least for a nine year old) Strat game for quite some time. Either way: mission accomplished. the Pokemon cards are gathering dust in his closet!
  16. Wow--thanks again for the great offers. Please put me in for the Judy Johnson 3x5. Thanks!
  17. got back cecil cooper, billy spiers and darryl hamilton yesterday Wow--that must have been a fun trip from the mailbox! Great day! I haven't done any TTM for the past year but I think I'll get back into it. My son and I are digging through some football cards from the 80s and early 90s and pulling out Packers and other cards that might be neat to have signed.
  18. Dave Weber (minorleaguesingles.com) breaks up team sets and sells singles of players--usually about $2 a pop. Awfully nice guy, too. He may be on vacation right now, but if he is he'll get back to you as soon as he can.
  19. Gamel is pretty tough TTM, but there isn't a very large sample on scn to work with. He's only 3 out of 17 reported there, but at least a half dozen were sent in the last 5 weeks or so. If you have something easily replaceable for him to sign, I think I'd probably wait until the minor league season begins and send it to Nashville. Would others agree that it's too late to send to Spring Training addresses, not just for Gamel but for everyone? Even though it would get there on time, it's likely to be buried under a bunch of earlier requests. And who is to say the player will take their mail with them after they break camp.
  20. I have a friend at work who is trying this, and is making it seem like he just split a damn atom. I loved this line. Inspired, I got up at my normal time of 5:00 today and decided instead of working out trying to lose weight I would split an atom. It was a great day because, contrary to a normal morning, I at least made progress on the atom. Seriously, though, there shouldn't be a right answer to this. Sure, I get up early and maybe somebody envies me for that ability. But I envy those that can stay up past midnight, too. It's a wash.
  21. Ichiro bobble, please. Very kind of you--thank you!
  22. Please put me in for the Weeks bobble. Your generosity is very much appreciated.
  23. My grammar police pet peeve is "the point is mute." The point is silent?
  24. BCBF--If you want to send me your address, I'll send you a few extras to get you started on your wall. You probably already know this, but sportscollectors.net is the best $15 a TTMer can spend in a year.
