  1. I think I've mentioned it in other threads, but in the last couple of years my long standing favorite, "Glory of Their Times", has fallen to third place. "The 26th Man" is a surprisingly good diary-type book by Steve Fireovid. He had some help from Mark Winegardner putting together that book, and Mark's "Prophet of the Sandlots" is my new #1. It's one of those you won't put down, even if you don't have the time to read it. I knew the ending before picking the book up, but it still was simply tremendous. And I'm glad I wasn't the only one that took an eternity to read "90 Feet From Fame"!
  2. I wonder if Dock is Gary Daley Jr.'s uncle or something. From the Brevard County game the other day: Brevard County Bottom 5th . . . Pitcher Change: Gary DaleyJr. replaces Brandon Dickson. Charlie Fermaint hit by pitch. Taylor Green scores. Chuckie Caufield to 3rd. Stephen Chapman to 2nd. Kenny Holmberg hit by pitch. Chuck Caufield scores. Stephen Chapman to 3rd. Charlie Fermaint to 2nd. Jimmy Mojica hit by pitch. Stephen Chapman scores. Charlie Fermaint to 3rd. Kenny Holmberg to 2nd.
  3. I don't know him, but a new World Record in the 50m backstroke was set by this man last week: 50 m backstroke 24.47* Liam Tancock Steve Czabin had a segment this morning about funny sports names.
  4. I was very much in the same boat--I didn't know what I wanted to do exactly after college. Thus, I stuck with the "Business Management" major and got my bachelor's in that. I'm glad I had the balance in courses because my jobs since college have all been quite different. From collections to underwriting to my current marketing research position--each one required me to draw from some other part of my education. And yes, Samurai has a great point in that marketing can be very technical and you don't have to be a salesperson to be involved in it. I can narrow a target market down to a mighty fine point for any given promotion. There are algorithms out there that can fairly accurately predict consumer behavior. For example, if you take out a loan for a car we know that in 18 months you or someone in your household have a good shot at looking at another car loan. Combining that knowledge with some demographic and survey information I can usually get a mailing list of 100 or so that will have a very high propensity to take out an auto loan. My costs are minimized to the point that even if one of these folks take out the loan we come out WAY ahead. Sorry...sidetracked. But my point is I'm in marketing now but I never had to limit my career choices to just marketing. Go for the general marketing degree.
  5. Yes, the "Kohl's presents.." is mighty annoying--glad I wasn't the only one to think so.
  6. Rudy makes the sack on the game's final play and gets carried off the field. I go through the same process as TLB--"not this time". To no avail. I'll add my name to the list for Forrest Gump's grave scene. The end of "Philadelphia" makes it tough to stop my bottom lip from quivering, too.
  7. Where I live I can select whatever tank I want when I exchange, so I've never had any problems going that route. I've had them refilled, too, but I guess I just like getting a new (or at least new-looking) tank each time.
  8. Maybe not the universe, but they are the Florida of Wisconsin high school sports right now. I didn't realize the football/basketball thing had never been done before. Wow! The girls program never was all that great, but they are starting to build a little something, too. I heard E-S will go to Division 3 next year for basketball. Couple that with all the seniors that were lost and I'd say this title might be something that needs to be enjoyed slowly over time. On a sad note, though, I realize I am getting quite old. I remember a lot of these guys' dads playing. Heck, Lance Rongstad's dad was just a few years ahead of me in school. Coach Roginski was just starting out when I was in junior high (he was my football coach and Health Science teacher in 7th grade) and he hasn't changed much at all, so maybe that's some solice.
  9. I hadn't heard this one until Christmas letter from a relative arrived in our mailbox last December. It's not bugging me (in fact, I still find it hilarious considering the "prim and proper" source), but it fits in with the improper use of words/non-words/phrases: "Sometimes during the year we take our family for granite."
  10. Once again, it's me vs. Jimbo (or, more accurately, Jimbo's dad). Great run for this group from Eleva-Strum. Third straight state basketball appearance after only going to state twice before in their history. Football team is the defending Div 7 champs after last year's runner up result. Heck, the E-S girls are two games away from their first ever state appearance. Good time to be a fan!
  11. Should be a blast. Not to burst your bubble, but Hawaii, particularly the Big Island, has had a ton of rain recently. I'm not exactly sure, but I want to say that Hilo had 11 inches of rain a few days ago. Don't focus too much on the game. Consider renting a car to get out to the stadium. Traffic coming back to Waikiki (if that's where you are staying) is rough after the game, but at least you won't have to wait for a bus.
  12. Gulp. I have a dilemma. Do I join with you guys and mock the listing? Or do I go to my basement bat rack and silently gaze upon my "good as new" version of the same Hammonds bat with somewhat diminished appreciation?
  13. I either purchased or received the Bluebook as a gift from 1998 to 2005. It seems to me there wasn't an option in the professional edition for the three ring binder version but I could be mistaken. I see that it is available in this format this year, so that scratches one suggestion off my list. I wasn't very happy when the editions were split into pro versus college. Sure, information on both is available but basically at double the price it was before the split. The historian in me says you could have an extremely vital research source here if you included a complete necrology of major and minor league players from the past year. The information is out there--maybe you need to talk with SABR--but to put it all in one place would be great. It would be great to have a few lines about the players career if at all possible--especially for the minor leaguers. You could also include sort of a travel tips section for each park. Include times when gates open, nearby hotels, and maybe even promotional schedules with a later update. Autograph hounds might be appreciative of any tips for best places to score them--I think there is a similar baseball book out there with this data, but again--the Bluebook is more complete. The daily schedules are an absolute nightmare to read (at least they were in the 05 version). Not sure how they could be improved, but it could be looked at. That's all I can think of for now. Hope there is a nugget or two you can use. Good luck!
  14. Thanks for the input everyone. I wanted something for my car because the sports radio I listen to in the morning now comes in for maybe 15 minutes of my 40 minute commute. Plus all of the FM radio stations I like up here in the hinterlands have converted over to Christmas carols now, so if the sports talk gets annoying I really can only go to my CDs now. As a bonus, this sort of doubles as an mp3 player that records from XM, so I can bring it in the house (won't get stolen from the car--nice feature) and even if we can't get live reception I can still play a recorded station for music. And yeah, I'm drooling over the baseball content. Thanks again!
  15. Hello all- I've been considering going with XM Radio for a while now. I was just kind of wondering if those that have it think it's worth the money, if there are any service issues with it, customer service problems, etc. A couple of specific questions as well: I'm thinking of going with the Nexus 50 radio/MP3 and a car kit--I wouldn't need a special radio in the car to listen to live XM, would I? If I understand it correctly the Nexus would just transmit to a specified FM radio station and I could listen live through my car stereo. Am I wrong? I'll save the dumbest question for last: is the radio hard-wired to the antenna at home? If so, I couldn't really use it in my basement as I have no south-facing window. Thank you very much for the advice. Jason
  16. I'm looking for a credible link, but according to some comments on mlbtraderumors.com, Linebrink has signed with the ChiSox for four years, $19M. Please feel free to move to "rumors" if appropriate linkage can't be found.
  17. I've asked this same question for other trades, so I'll bring it up again: what would this package equate to in terms of Brewer prospects? I have some theories, but I'd like to read other opinions.

  19. Yeah, that is too bad. Hopefully he'll get to it in the offseason and get it back to you. And me, too, for that matter as I have a photo out to him as well. When I was eight years old (1979), I found the mailing addresses for the Kansas City Royals and Milwaukee Brewers. I wrote letters to Amos Otis and Jim Gantner and asked if they would sign the card I enclosed. Gumby's came back within a week, but no sign of the Otis card. Fast forward--a lot. I'm a junior and getting ready to go to my high school team's baseball game. I'm on crutches because I had hurt my knee the previous game in a home plate collision. Still a bit bummed out over the prospect of missing most of my season, I hobbled out to the mailbox and saw an envelope addressed to me by a kid. In the envelope was the Amos Otis card, signed. Nearly ten years after I had sent the card, it came back and brought me some joy.
  20. I love the autobiographies of Eldon Auker (as Pedro noted), Ned Garver, Billy Werber, and Virgil Trucks. Lou Boudreau's was a good, but short read and Birdie Tebbets was interesting as well. Maybe it's just me, but I'd steer clear of the Red Schoendienst book. It just didn't hold my interest too much and I'm not sure why. Those are the autobiographies I thought of off the top of my head. I'm sure I'm missing a few.
  21. According to the New York Daily News, the Yankees turned down a deal for Eric Gagne that centered around Double-A pitching prospect Alan Horne. Who would Alan Horne most closely equate to in Brewer prospects?
  22. While in Hawaii, my wife and I were picking up a few things at a surf shop on the way to do some snorkeling. The guy in front of me in line was Donnie Osmond. We actually rode the same bus to Hanauma Bay. Actually, during a layover on that same trip, I saw Bob Barker at the LA Airport filming a commercial.
  23. I got in one game last night for PS2--I like it so far but I had trouble with a couple of newer features. I'm not entering any tournaments any time soon, though, so I'll just keep practicing when I can. Honestly, with the requisite "one game-small sample" mentioned, I don't know that it's much better than last year's version on PS2, but maybe that has something to do with the user (me) rather than the game. Keg--does that person with the rosters also do other games, like NCAA Baseball '07? I'm so naive to gaming things like this, so I've played all of these NCAA games with just numbers. It would be cool for the announcers to mention names.
  24. I agree--this one was a clunker. Judging by the fact that it took over a day for anyone to post about it, I'd say that could very well be the opinion of several. Let's hope for a bounce back next week.
