  1. AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH this is more like it
  2. apparently the PTBNL could be "substantial", as in an MLB'r
  3. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/08/pirates-acquire-marlon-byrd-and-john-buck.html Pirates Acquire Marlon Byrd And John Buck By Steve Adams [August 27 at 1:09pm CST] 1:09pm: The Mets will receive minor league second baseman Dilson Herrera and a player to be named later, according to MLB.com's Anthony DiComo (on Twitter). Herrera, 19, is having a strong season at Class-A West Virgina. The Colombian infielder is hitting .265/.330/.421 with 11 homers and 11 stolen bases in 479 plate appearances. Herrera ranked as the No. 20 prospect in the Pirates system prior to the season, according to Baseball America, and his solid play in 2013 has him currently ranked 11th among Pirates prospects by MLB.com's Jonathan Mayo. In their scouting report, BA noted that Herrera has plus speed and surprising power for someone of his size (he's listed as 5'10" and 150 pounds) with the ability to hit the ball to all fields. BA feels that his lack of arm strength will limit him to second base, and Mayo agrees. Mayo adds that Herrera had no problem adjusting to the game after coming to the United States, and he projects an above-average hitter and well-above average runner. Mayo also ranked Herrera as the ninth-best second base prospect in all of minor league baseball. 1:01pm: The Pirates have acquired outfielder Marlon Byrd and catcher John Buck from the Mets, according to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York (on Twitter). Earlier today, Rubin reported that in the wake of Matt Harvey's injury, the Mets were exploring trade options and had placed five players on waivers, including Byrd, Buck and Pedro Feliciano. Byrd (pictured on the right) was claimed by an unnamed NL team shortly thereafter, which clearly was the Pirates. It's unclear whether Buck cleared waivers or was also claimed by the Pirates following a season-ending injury to backup catcher Michael McKenry. Byrd, who turns 36 on Friday, is having a surprising career year despite his age. In 464 plate appearances, he's batting .285/.330/.518. His 21 homers and 136 OPS+ are both career-bests. Byrd is no longer a regular center fielder (just two games there in 2013), but his defense in right field grades out to a solid +6.6 UZR/150, and The Fielding Bible pegs him at nine runs saved. He's owed just $130K for the remainder of the season before he will be a free agent, so he's an affordable upgrade for the Pirates, financially speaking. Given that salary, it's a surprise to see that the Reds didn't place a claim to block the Pirates from acquiring him. Cincinnati is just 3.5 games out of first in the NL Central while the Pirates are a half-game back of the Cardinals. All three NL Central teams would be in the playoffs if the season ended today, but the Reds and Pirates would face each other in the one-game Wild Card playoff. Buck, 33, has cooled off considerably following a meteoric start that saw him club 10 homers in his first 25 games (23 starts). Since May 1, he's hitting just .206/.290/.302 with six homers, and he's owed $1.1MM. However, with McKenry out for the season following surgery to repair a torn meniscus, his pop and veteran leadership should be welcome additions for Pittsburgh. Buck has also caught a strong 30 percent of potential base-stealers.
  4. Yovani Gallardo -- Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (on Twitter) reports that Gallardo has been placed on waivers by the Brewers. The starter drew interest this summer as a player who could help not just for 2013, but beyond, as he is under contract for $11.25MM next season with a $13MM club option for 2015. Gallardo is having a down year, but he has had two strong starts against the Reds this month since coming off of the DL. For his career, Gallardo owns a 3.76 ERA with 8.9 K/9 and 3.5 BB/9.
  5. 3 against a struggling pirates team, could end august on a strong note!
  6. I agree to an extent, but how many of those old era pitchers began pitching from when they were kids? Its an honest question, something ive always wondered.
  7. thats why im not worried about Arroyo
  8. man, I forgot Burgos! I think Hellweg and Nelson stay in AAA next year with Jungmann and Pena, and Burgos/Thornburg/Fiers/Hand/Figaro will all be in Milwaukee to fill the pen/rotation
  9. I guess it's possible--but I think Braun's case is done, and he should be free to discuss his own case and rightly deflect anything that would impact another player's case. I don't think any others have faced live questions, though Braun's case is pretty unique in that he has been very public in his defense. Trenni's tweet, cited earlier on here tonight was right on the mark. He should be as public in his admission. The most unique thing about Braun's case, as compared to the other suspended players, and any other athlete that I know of for that matter, is that it leaked out that he had a positive drug test. From there on, he was FORCED to either make a public defense or throw in the towel and give up his appeal. And, when he won his appeal, he had to be adamant that he never used PEDs or people would have interpreted it as admitting that he was caught and won his appeal only on a technicality. If you don't believe me, go back and look and some message board threads that began as soon as ESPN reported the positive test. the masses certainly didn't need to wait to hear any facts before proclaiming Braun a cheater and a liar. Take away that leak, and Braun's case would be a lot more like the other suspended players, the main difference being that he's a bigger name. Nobody seems to be so outraged (in fact most people probably don't know) that Melky Cabrera tried to appeal his positive test by creating a phony website to support a claim that he didn't know what he was taking. And I don't hear the lynch mob out after Jhonny Peralta, who said publicly that he never took PEDs and that anyone who said otherwise was lying. I haven't seen any of them holding press conferences to explain their behavior. I completely agree with the posters who say that those wanting more of an apology from Braun will never be satisfied, and that they are looking for reasons to justify their outrage. If Braun had made a public statement, they would have blasted him for looking insincere. Maybe Braun and his camp are learning a lesson from the Tiger Woods episode. For how many weeks was Woods the target of public scorn and ridicule, and his public statement of apology didn't help him. It just gave the news outlets more film footage to mock him with. But, you know what, after he went through the grinder of playing in his first tournaments the frenzy died off. It's not because people forgive and forget, it's that they get bored and move on to something else. How Braun is perceived 1, 2, and 10 years from now is going to be shaped by what he does on and off the field from this day forward, not whether he made his apology in writing or in person. well said for your 2nd post on the forum
  10. wait for it........................... wait for it................................ waaaaaaaaaaaiiiiiiiiiiiiiit for iiiiiiiiittttttt...................................................
  11. seriously, is Buster in a writers Union? The Grievance process is there TO BE USED BY UNION MEMBERS! He appealed because AT THAT TIME he thought the sample process was faulty and caused the spike and he grieved THE PROCESS, not whether or not he cheated.
  12. blocked at work as "suspicious"
  13. you know what helps heal injuries completely? being suspended for 65 games.
  14. It was "fun" while it lasted, but the previous topic was getting rather unwieldy. I'm told by the experts that such large threads tend to hurt board performance. Yeah, i can understand that part, and im not really upset at all, i guess it should have been in blue
  15. im really upset this is a separate thread and we wont break 100 pages about braun
  16. http://i.imgur.com/hHy98.gif OK dlk9s, who would you recommend? KEITH OLBERMANN
  17. after everything he's been through, why would he lie more? not you, but people honestly think that are tinfoil hat wearing suckers
  18. ichiro got number 4000 today
  19. I dont think what Tom H. did was wrong, he pretty much reported on it and ended by pretty much saying "come on, really?", but Buster Onleycaresaboutaheadline can turn in his credentials at the nearest garbage can on his way home tonight
  20. aaaahhhhhhhhhhh, now this is the Gorzo I remember from the Pirates...
