  1. Have their own AAA guys hit against him in practice and see what comes of it. Or send him to Wisconsin who isn't in playoff contention and let him throw a lot of pitches.
  2. I liked Aguilar a lot more than most. But RH 1b-DH types who aren't playing regularly don't command a big return. I think the AL is Aguilar's ideal location. I give the trade a C-minus. Faria looks very similar to a number of guys they already have but they need healthy arms right now so he seems to fit the bill.
  3. The point here is irony. It' s not that he earned let alone deserved something from the Brewers. Stearns is a very sharp GM and this is not a knock on him. The Phils offered him a roster spot and chance to start. They said they had an idea how to fix his problems by changes in his pitch selection. But Smyly could quickly revert to his form prior to the Phils. This situation just points out in a dramatic, but very short term way, the importance of timing in player decisions.
  4. 13 innings pitched - one run given up.
  5. If you were the Brewers who would you put on the mound on Tuesday-Lyles or Ponce?
  6. Easy pass for me. Stroman is not much different than Anderson and Chacin - hardly an ace, with up and down years. With Woodruff out I wouldn't mortgage the future. I'd stay pat and work with what they have right now.
  7. I'm not as enthusiastic about Ray as some. But assuming they want a reliable or better starter and\or a quality reliever I would be willing to offer among the following minor league players (with Arcia the exception): Arcia or Dubon; Corey Ray or Trent Grisham; any pitcher(s) except Rasmussen, Ashby, or Antoine Kelly; any position players except Turang, Feliciano, or Lutz. This would adequately protect depth the next few years.
  8. Because of Rasmussen's prior injury and this being his first pro season I believe they'll keep him in Biloxi in a steady role through season's end. That would be quite a debut for any player.
  9. I wouldn't go into a buy or sell mode. I don't see them getting enough value in return this year as buyers and sell offs would throw them into a rebuild. I'd work to stabilize as many pitchers as possible under multi-year team control, demote Shaw and Arcia, and promote Hiura and Dubon.
  10. I'd offer Phil Bickford and, since we no longer have Andrew Susac, Jacob Nottingham.
  11. I'm satisfied with the lefty pitchers, the two catchers, and the switch hitting left-fielder first baseman. In today's game speed without power doesn't play that well and they have plenty of RH relief pitcher prospects. Many picks remain but having followed all the Brewers drafts over the years this one is uninspiring.
  12. Finally they pick a lefty whose profile at least reminds me of Tyrone Hill, whose career ended far too early due to injury.
  13. Initial reaction given the players available: Huh?! Positives. A lefty with good size and dominant for one season at least in a college league. For Brewers, already had his first major arm surgery. Funky delivery creates deception. Has very good control of below average fastball and maybe a changeup. Negatives. Apparently hasn't successfully developed a breaking ball or ability to control one. Certainly draftable but sounds to me at best like a day two pick. But I don't expect too many mistakes under Stearns and can only hope for the best.
  14. I don't care why they did it. I disagree. Hiura's advanced right handed bat and the position he plays (at least as well as Shaw or Moustakis) is more beneficial than Eric Thames.
  15. Burnes should be sent down and start and pitch as many innings as needed to straighten him out. There are plenty of options pitching better than him right now. I'd move Thames one way or another to enable activating Shaw. He can get at bats at 1B and 3B and ph. Hiura should be kept because he's a much better hitter than Thames now and gives them better righty-lefty balance. Aguilar is also a better hitter than Thames.
  16. For what it's worth, except for Lopez and Harrison, the Brewers obtained those prospects in trades.
  17. As a Milwaukee baseball fan since 1957, I agree with Turborickey. My theory about Molitor's departure was that Selig sacrificed him to make a financial viability point. Molitor has Minnesota roots that he's been loyal to, not Wisconsin. I see no particular reason to bring him to Milwaukee. At most, I'd let him apply, but I'd evaluate him no differently than an outsider for any particular job opening. Counsell should be kept.
  18. They also promoted 1B-OF Weston Wilson to Biloxi. Could be to enable him to go to Arizona Fall League.
  19. Shaw's switch to unfamiliar 2B might also cause a downshift in his offensive production.
  20. Trade non-core players or non-top prospects if you can get some help this year. Team good, but too many better teams this year in and out of division and league.
  21. They need to find out who goes forward on the 40-man roster; see how competitive this roster is through the end of the season. I wouldn't be afraid to trade mid-level prospects for a rental or upgrade at positions of need. But they have too many prospects on the cusp of solid major league status to get too wild in trading them.
  22. The strategy, as discussed above, appears a lead off hitter, improved defense and fewer strikeouts, which they've accomplished. I wouldn't evaluate the moves until the whole picture is clarified by follow up moves. Unlikely they aren't part of the plan.
  23. My 2017-18 plan would very selective in free agency. I wouldn't spend a lot on stop gaps. If I spend in free agency it would be for quality and longevity. Actually, I would continue the rebuild at least one more year. They had a number of unexpectedly good performances, which is often not a harbinger of future success. I'd like to see more of what we have than what we don't have now.
  24. I wouldn't bring up anyone not on the 40-man. A third catcher, to free up the 1-2 catchers for pinch hitting. Left-handed reliever-Wang. LH bat- Phillips. Not much more.
  25. I see the exchange value as in line with other trades by Stearns. They need another LH power bat. Shaw can play 3B, apparently well enough, 1B and outfield. He's controllable in the long term. Right now, Shaw is what he is, but sometimes these guys bloom in their later 20's. Consistently with one type of player they've been picking up - guys like Broxton, Susac, Villar, Perez, etc. They had no higher level SS prospect that can hit. Isan Diaz will be a 2B. I would expect to see Dubon assigned to AA. Diaz could be jumped to AA, but it would be as a 2B. If he's assigned to A+, he'd probably play SS another year because they have a number of decent 2B candidates. Hope that Pennington at least can provide bullpen depth in three years when they should have started getting pretty good.
