  1. Wow this is one of the strangest in-game threads to read. Approximately 60 comments about the weather and how this team is embarrassing followed by approximately a half dozen positive comments.
  2. No disrespect but you were told by who? How much validity does it have that you were told in the in-game thread?
  3. It would be incredibly expensive to retrofit an A/C system to the park, not to mention the added electricity costs. And where would the A/C infrastructure go? Most large buildings have the A/C units on the roof. Even without that option, the building was not planned to have A/C from the start, so something would have to move to make room for the new equipment. Miler Park is heated and air conditoned throughout, except for the seating bowl/playing field. I know this to be fact, as I was part of the installation crew. I left just a few days before the crane collapse. With all due respect, I read your post and thought well if it is everything EXCEPT the seating bowl and the field what else is there? I guess it makes sense that the luxury boxes and clubhouse would be air conditioned. I just think that if your sitting in a regular seat in the middle of the summer, if the seating bowl isn't air conditioned... the stadium isn't air conditioned. I remember reading about the stadium and how they said it would be heated but not air conditioned. I think when it is discussed people generally mean the seating bowl and the playing field.
  4. I'll agree with Gamel getting 5 or 6 starts a week, McGehee 5 or 6 starts a week at 2nd and Counsell can get 1 a week at each position and the way J.J. is playing Counsell should get 1 or 2 a week at short too.
  5. Public Enemies is coming out in July. I wasn't around during John Dillinger's time but my English 101 research paper would tell you that he was a beloved bank robber. Also while it is a bit of a stretch, there is Robin Hood. It's not that crazy to like someone for doing something illegal.
  6. First of all we aren't comparing Joe Morgan to me. The discussion is about Joe Morgan/Harold Reynolds vs "stat geeks" or statisticians. My understanding is we are debating about the types of player you would want on your team or would build a team around. More or less batting avg. vs OBP or OPS and what is more useful to determining value in a player. Next we aren't discussing climbing a mountain. If you'd like to use that analogy lets really get serious about it. If you (assuming you aren't a superior athlete) wanted advice as to how to climb a mountain would you turn to... A. A former mountain climber who climbed mountains years ago before advances in technology and changes to the environment happened who is going to give you advice based on what the mountain was like when he climbed it? Or maybe this former mountain climber made it up and down the mountain based on their physical condition that you don't possess despite their lack of superior survival skills. B. Some "mountain climbing geek" who has never climbed a mountain but has studied success rates of every mountain climber in modern times and what they did that was successful vs what unsuccessful mountain climbers did and how their strategies and performance differed from the successful mountain climbers. Now that your analogy is a little closer to what we are ACTUALLY discussing, which mountain climber would you choose based on logic? Back to baseball instead of mountain climbers. The reason the stats that Joe Morgan despises are valuable is because it removes "the eye test". Unless Joe has the profound ability to see every at bat for every player and recall it when necessary he ought to rely on the stats a little more. The difference between a fan or someone who relies on the eye test vs a "stat geek" is that it also removes human emotion as well as helps your memory. Lets say you and Joe Morgan watch 5 out of 6 games that a particular team plays in a week. In that 1 game you missed there is information there that is very important. Or lets say you allow your human emotion to factor in and get all worked up about a player that strikes out a lot. You may then think that a Russell Branyan or Mike Cameron are terrible players because "every time I watch this guy bat he strikes out". I have a co-worker that swears that Solomen Torres was a terrible pitcher last year. Every time he watched, Torres blew a save. The reason Harold Reynolds hates walks is because he isn't looking at the stats to see the value in them. No I wouldn't want a player on my team that hit .000 but had an on-base percentage of .380. But lets be realistic here. There are values in walks. Working the count to tire out the pitcher to get to the bullpen, letting your teammates get a longer look at the pitcher, reaching base. Would you rather have a player that always put the first pitch in play, or one that works the count? My point is that there is a reason to evaluate parts of the game with stats that you would just overlook otherwise. I'd listen to Joe Morgan if he wanted to teach me how to turn the double play or hit a curveball. I just don't value his knowledge on assembling a team and what types of players are valuable. Sorry, I typed this up at work and I tried a few times to break this into paragraphs and it just wouldn't do it.
  7. I'm sorry but I refuse to believe that player salaries play no role in ticket prices. Where are the owners getting the money to pay the players from (I know sponsors also generate revenue but money at the gates is huge)? If the ticket price was determined solely by supply and demand they would fluctuate more. The home team is tanking in July and fans lose interest, ticket prices would come down. The home team is in a pennant race, ticket prices sky rocket. You really don't see any corelation between player contracts increasing and ticket prices increasing over the last 25 years? If you want to say that player contracts aren't the ONLY factor in ticket prices, that is fair. But they aren't completely unrelated. What is the signifigance of ticket sales then?
  8. If you want to defend Reynolds... okay. He's an engaging speaker, has playing experience and can share that with the viewer. His arguement about OPS I don't agree with but that I can get over. Joe Morgan though? I'm just going to assume you haven't listened to Joe Morgan speak, EVER, if you defend Joe Morgan. You can't tell me that because a guy played in the league that he is more knowledgeable. There are a few players that don't really understand the game. They are in the league because of their physical abilities, not their brain.
  9. Enabling steroid use and driving player contracts to ridiculous heights causing familes to have difficulty affording tickets... That's how I will always remember Don Fehr. He also had a huge hand in pushing larger markets abilities to sign the best players leaving the smaller markets behind.
  10. I agree with those of you wishing CC well. The guy risked his own health to help a team/city that in the back of his mind he had to know he wouldn't be playing for the next year. I'll never understand the people that talk about him taking the money. Everyone would take that money, myself included. Even more annoying are all the comments about his weight. Between CC and Prince there are more comments about them being fat by fans from one of the fattest states in the country. Seriously? Brewer fans making fun of a player for being fat? I'm a big guy myself. Who cares how big they are, they can play.
  11. I said it in the In-Game thread the other night. Hall's homerun was probably the worst thing that could have happened. He hit an 88mph fastball that was belt hight and on the inner third of the plate. It also didn't look to have any movement. As he stood their admiring his rare accomplishment I thought, there's no way he's going to listen to Sveum or any of the coaches and hit the ball the other way any time soon now.
  12. Awesome site. Thanks for sharing. Really cool to see County Stadium as well as my old neighborhood in Greenfield.
  13. I'm sure someone will find reason to object to this but I'd just rather watch someone else fail instead of Bill Hall. I don't even care who it is. It would seem logical to play Gamel but I'll take anyone else over Hall at this point.
  14. Not sure if we were going to see Trevor anyway but the insurance run is nice. Alright Corey!
  15. TH always uses the caps during his game blogs for updates like that or if a trade has happened.
  16. Their saying Braun left with lower back tightness on the Indians feed.
  17. Great play by Counsell, but he was out. Make up call.
  18. As great as it is to get that home run from Hall, that 88 mph fastball with no movement that was up on the inner half of the plate is going to cause him to spend another month thinking he can pull everything.
  19. I'd like to think Soup could get 1 of these 3 at the end of the Indians order with Bill Hallish batting averages. Nice outing Soup!
  20. The topic of BA and Rock as announcers has come up so many times as far as which teams announcers would you rather have over them. I'll start with Clevelands. Pretty enjoyable for 2 and a 1/2 games so far.
  21. I realize this means very little but the Indians announcers sound very suprised Kendall hasn't led off at all yet this year.
  22. I like what Counsell and Kendall bring to the lineup. I don't know if I'd have Kendall leading off but I like those 2 batting back to back. It's a very small sample size but like it was pointed out, they are getting on base. They don't have to hit it far just get on in front of Braun and Fielder.
  23. how about chooseveg.com sponsoring Prince! That's funny to me. A doctor sponsors Bill Schroeder. Wonder if he is affiliated with the Good Feet Store? 85 bucks to sponsor Big Z's page. Wonder if it would be worth it before we play the Cubs again.
  24. hahaha I just looked at Brooks Kieschnick's page. It looks like members of this site are already all over that one.
