  1. There has to be a better way for John Hart to word a kids ability to get to the big leagues than "He's a fairly quick comer". There just has to be.
  2. Does anyone have a good answer why we should throw out the numbers and stats on Minor? I don't understand why they think that. The Zack Wheeler interview was painful to watch.
  3. signability=the worst thing about the MLB draft
  4. I don't even know what I would change about the draft but is it just me or is this totally awkward? I think I enjoyed following it on the internet and listening to the names read off by the teams a little bit more. We're only a few picks in though.
  5. I know what the thread is about. Your input is valued especially considering you've worked as an umpire. The point I was trying to make is that I thought you were a little one sided in your opinion. There are pleanty of people who are one sided in their opinion in defense of Cameron, JohnBriggs was more along those lines. I didn't mean to imply that you shouldn't share your opinion. I just meant that after one of your posts I knew that you were going to defend the umpire over Cameron regardless of what happened. I think people take the comment "people pay to watch the players not the umpires" too literal. I'm sure umpires know that the fans aren't paying to see them, it's just that some of them still try and steal the attention of the fans. I can not name for you which umpires because I care so little about the umpires that I would never take the time to learn their names but there are a few that seem to look for an argument. There is one that seems to have a serious napoleon complex.
  6. I don't know that I needed to be called a name for my opinion, but to each his own. Having been an umpire at the NCAA level and worked for sometime within MLB (a position that held close interaction with umpires), I'll disagree that most umpires are arrogant. I think the point about people paying to see umpires is true, but I've never seen an umpire act as if that is true. The umpire kept his cool until Cameron decided to turn around and whine for the 10th time in the series. Enough is enough. An umpire has to get control over the game and not allow Cameron to continue to hold up the game over some whiny diatribe (sp?) after each at-bat. An umpire has an obligation, one that he only engaged in after Cameron approached him from the batters box after the called strike 3. Cameron's motion should have been head down to the dugout, not to the rear of the catcher's box. Your opinions are insightful, but please dont try and create a perception that umpires think the game is all about them and a majority are arrogant...that couldn't be further from the truth. I'm not defending JohnBriggs whole post but I have to say that after reading your posts it was quite obvious you had done some work as a umpire. I know that a lot of people are obvious in their defense of their teams player and you are obviously biased in your defense of the umpire. Cameron deserved to be tossed from the game but the umpire didn't do a great job of staying calm. You've made several mentions of Cameron whining and how he should put his head down and walk away. At what point are your posts too negative towards the player? I'm not going to go on and on with this but I think that considering this is "brewerfan.net" and not "umpirefan.net" it was getting tough to read your posts. Just my opinion.
  7. Now they have convinced themselves that they got the better end of the deal.
  8. Todd I just want to say thank you for doing and posting this interview and thank you to Cheryl and Mandy for sharing their story. I read it at work and had to fight back tears. Your interview with Brooks was a great read and interesting, this I don't even know how to describe. I remember when it happened and hearing about it. I felt bad for him and his family but I didn't fully comprehend what it meant for his family. His story is one that everyone should know about. I have a lot of respect for the Rockies organization and the commissioner's office for how they treated his family. You did a great job with this interview, thanks again.
  9. With todays rumor that the Braves are looking into trading for Brad Penny from Boston, If Glavine had enough to contribute they would have hung on to him. I may be wrong, but I'm convinced he's not right and he's done.
  10. It sort of depends on the scoring system but I think I'd take Braun and Molina in a heart beat. If your scoring system is big on stolen bases then it's harder. My thought on trades is that I always want to be getting the best player in the trade. I'll give up the 2nd and 3rd best to get the best and the worst most of the time.
  11. Conan has enough of an audience from Late Night that he should be successful. The ratings from people simply falling asleep with their TV on following the news should be enough. I love his show so I'm a little biased here but what is there to hate about him? I enjoyed his bit running across the country. I think it comes down to if you like him you'll like the show, if you don't like him it doesn't matter what he does you won't like the show. If you don't like it, don't watch it.
  12. I'm going to have to disagree with you. People aren't calling for Gamel to play based on his major league stats, it's his minor league numbers and potential. You could change his name but his body of work still deserves a chance to play every day in the majors and if he's not going to, he needs to go back to Triple A and play every day.
  13. With the Braves adding McClouth I don't know that they are completely punting on the season. If Glavine wasn't worth 1 million to the Braves I'd have my doubts about what he has left. His rehab start stats look like he would be still be effective. According to ESPN news this morning he is considering retirement. I'd say that the Mets would be the most logical place for him he was going to play.
  14. I'd rather be waterboarded than watch Bill Hall bat. But I bet he is a great guy. Edited for forum etiquette.
  15. Anyone catch the commercial for the Marlins Bobblehead give away on their feed? I love that it's a guy who got in line really early and still wasn't one of the first 10,000 fans at the game so he was bummed out that he didn't get a bobblehead. I wonder if the total fans for 2 games would add up to 10,000.
  16. Totally agree with you on Manny, the guy has talent and the team needs to stick with him. DM said that he thinks it would be worse for Manny's confidence to be sent down, makes sense. I can even understand sticking with Suppan, but watching Bill Hall out there is getting really, really difficult.
  17. Andy was better in last nights show. I still don't think he should be on the show but atleast his Ed McMahon impression didn't continue into the 2nd show.
  18. I'm a Conan fan and admittedly not a Leno fan. I agree that the running to LA bit was funny. The monologue wasn't great but I think that is part of the first night situation. He has to address things a little bit. He even said that the first night would be a little different than normal. I'm sure that the show will "go back to normal" soon enough. I hate to say this but Andy Richter was just awkward as the announcer. Conan grew into a better host and personality with out him and bringing him back is kind of disappointing. I'll try and be patient and see if down the road Andy fits in better. So far so good in my opinion though.
  19. Actually a nice job by Coffey to get out of that mess only giving up 2 runs. I think the only time booing helps is to make a point to the manager that they are consistantly making the same wrong decision. Sorry I didn't mean to turn this into a to boo or not to boo thread. It was a reactionary comment that I now regret making. It was a rough inning.
  20. How was I putting words or sounds in your mouth? I asked a question. This is about the worst decision I've seen a long time. I figured if a person were to boo, it would be now. Just asking...
  21. So for the anti-boo people... you still wouldn't boo this performance or decision by Macha if you were in the stands?
  22. There was no way they were getting a double play on that ball but yes it would be a lot nicer with 2 outs at this point.
  23. Oh my god the bullpen phone isn't working! Strategic move by the Marlins...
  24. Why fly all the way to Miami, get dressed, stretch, play 5 1/2 innings to get a lead and THEN put in Julio? Just stay in Milwaukee an extra day and give the Marlins the win by forfeit. BA "Here comes Bill Castro, spotted something he didn't like." Was it Julio on the mound? That's what I spotted that I didn't like.
