  1. Before he was non-tendered I thought the Brewers might non-tender him but still want him back. But after Stearns' comments about Schoop being a mistake I knew that ship had sailed. They did not want Schoop back period.
  2. I doubt any teams were offering a multi-year deal for Schoop unless it was for chump change.
  3. My parents live in Arizona in the winter and I visited them over Thanksgiving. I stopped into a Dick's Sporting Goods and wandered into the Diamondbacks section. They had jerseys on the wall for Goldschmidt, Corbin, Pollock, and Greinke and no one else. Come spring training it's likely all 4 will be gone.
  4. The Cardinals just got quite a bit better for 2019. That is not good.
  5. Dee Gordon is owed $28 million over the next two years (which includes a buyout in year 3) and he's not better than what the Brewers had in Jonathan Villar. I'll pass.
  6. But they did not hit in the postseason, which would be essential to them being in the World Series regardless of whether or not Corbin was here. And they were still middle of the pack in runs scored despite the OPS+ because they had 2-3 guys who could hit while the rest of the lineup stunk. Despite the nice slash rankings, they were barely above average in runs per game, and well below average until the Moose trade and Yelich hot streak. The offense was incredibly top heavy and consistently put out a lineup with 3 pitcher-level hitters. Any way you slice it, to say the 2018 Brewers "can't hit" is hyperbole at its best. But it's the internet so I shouldn't expect any different.
  7. Previously underachieving pitcher has a career year that coincides with a contract year? Well, knock me over with a feather! Remember last year when there were rumors that Corbin was on the block, and that they had interest in Broxton or Santana? Part of my wonders if Corbin would have been dealt to the Brewers if Milwaukee might have a Word Series trophy. The 2018 Brewers with Patrick Corbin on the roster still can't hit. So, probably not. The Brewers were 2nd in the NL in team OPS+ and you say they "can't hit." Tough crowd.
  8. The Phillies definitely want to move Franco.
  9. No one on this board has been more critical of Schoop and the deal than me, but I don't hate Schoop and don't know why anyone would. It was an ill-advised deal and he played poorly. Now, thankfully, he's gone. That's that.
  10. I disagree. Certainly his comments were not necessary, but they convey a sense of humility that is refreshing to see in a decision maker of his position.
  11. The arbitration system is broken, due in part, because it's based on rewarding antiquated stats like HR's and RBI's.
  12. That's very refreshing of Stearns to admit he whiffed. I will also add that a statement like that pretty much forecloses the possibility of Schoop coming back at a lower price. Clearly, the Brewers did not like what they saw in his time here.
  13. I agree with this completely--which I was I was highly negative on the trade from the word go. I love what Stearns has done but the Schoop trade was a head scratcher.
  14. I was watching MLB Now last night (on the MLB Network) and all panelists, including former Rockies GM Dan O'Dowd, said that non-tendering Schoop was a "no-brainer."
  15. Plus, there are plenty of other 2B's available in the FA market that are worth multi-year deals.
  16. I doubt that. Not this year. And if he does sign a multi-year deal I'm betting it will be for a total value of less than $10 million.
  17. What would be Schoop's motivation to do that when on the open market he'll get multiple years of more guaranteed money that he'd be offered in incentives? There's no guarantee he will get multiple years or more $ than what the Brewers would pay. That said, there's no way he's agreeing to something with the Brewers now. He'll make the rounds and see what offers he gets.
  18. The. Time. Is. Now. If M.A. can't dump some serious cash into this operation right now he should sell the franchise. One game away from the World Series.
  19. I think they non-tender Schoop but see if they can bring him back at a lower salary than he would have gotten in arbitration. In other words, they'd be interesting in keeping him for 2019 but not at $8.5+ million. I don't see Schoop having a robust market elsewhere so this strategy could pay off.
  20. I'm increasingly thinking they will tender Schoop and hope he rebounds. If he doesn't, you bring Hiura up in June. I don't see the Brewers investing in a 2-3 year contract for a 2B when Hiura is close. They only need a 1 year bridge. And when you get down to it, where else are the Brewers going to spend the cash in 2019? SP? Maybe but the highest priced guys are likely not coming to Milwaukee anyway. Edit - I'm rethinking this. I think they non-tender Schoop but see if they can bring him back at a lower salary than he would have gotten in arbitration. In other words, they'd be interesting in keeping him for 2019 but not at $8.5+ million. I don't see Schoop having a robust market elsewhere so this strategy could pay off.
  21. I would have been interested in Donaldson at 1/$23 million. The guy can flat out rake and on a one year deal the risk would be very short-term. These are the type of bold moves that can pay off big time for a team on the cusp of the World Series like the Brewers. I would have played Travis Shaw at 2B for 2019 and moved him back to 3B in 2020 when Hiura can take over 2B full-time (hopefully).
  22. This thread reminds me of the "let's wildly speculate why Derek Johnson left for the Reds" thread. A pointless exercise without actual accurate information.
  23. Now that I think about it, given Will Carroll’s history of being wrong, this quote is literally the truth.
  24. His defense isn't average. I'm not a fan of his, but I can see where people would have interest in his above-average bat and positional versatility.
  25. I don't see why people are guessing an answer to this foolishness. History suggests Will Carroll is full of crap and there's no way to know even if he's not.
