Priester Uribe Durbin Turang Collins Ashby Frelick Even Blake Perkins. Without even getting into more brand name players like Peralta, Yelich, Chourio, Contreras, Woody, or even the hyped Miz, this org has a type and it’s seen in how they have been identifying guys with grit, who are team oriented, and make the little plays to win. I bet they targeted Lockridge and Siegler similarly. Pitchers like Henderson and Gasser. Synergy and chemistry over buying every star they can a la the Dodgers.

Happy to see so much baseball activity here while there’s an NFL game going on. I like both sports but wish baseball could generate more interest across the board.

Totally, especially for the playoffs. You’d love to have Mis, Ashby, Uribe and Megill as major factors.

They found a great role and fit for him. He’s got talent and can be a weapon in this role.

Vaughn has talent with the bat or else he wouldn’t have been the 3rd overall pick. You’d love to see him become a Schwarber. He’s got physical ability but it’s the inconsistency and inability to weather slumps that has been a killer. If he could ever get over that, you could have a Schwarber type.

Who had Turang as being on the verge of .290, 20 HR and 80 RBI with a plus .800 ops? With his speed and defense?

Man Priester was an incredible acquisition (so far, and knock on wood). Fingers crossed he’s got lasting power. More data on Chris Hook’s brilliance and organizational know-how.

I couldn’t be happier with this team and the way the organization is going. This what I was waiting for, for years. Playoff baseball will be about the right things clicking at the right time. Whether that happens, I don’t know. So I’m cautious about it. But on May 15, I couldn’t have computed the synergies that have come together. If you plugged in our roster, the data, etc., I don’t think any human or AI could have calculated where we are. In the concern category, I’m probably worried about some of the arms being overtaxed. A guy like Uribe is an example. Can they all be fresh enough at playoff time? Either way, I’m happy with this organization. I’m process-oriented and our process sets us apart.

I’m still patient in my view of Siegler. There’s some flexibility there that’s really appealing. Sample size is tiny so far and to me he doesn’t seem overmatched. I’m still hoping he can be a solid bench piece this year and potentially beyond considering he’s under control.

Small sample size but Lockridge has a chance to be a solid role player and fits Murphy’s mold. Siegler has a chance to be another of these guys off the bench. There’s a lot of controllable time with these guys.

I’m in the camp that he’s at least 12 months away, and that’s if he continues improving. You’ve got to love him physically and on defense. He’s also incredibly young. I think his bat isn’t advanced enough yet. Lot of meat left on that bone to improve first.

It’s funny things don’t bother you when he’s your guy but Rea seems to work incredibly slowly. Annoying to watch as the game has changed. It’s not the Mike Hargrove era anymore.

I’d also strongly look at extensions for Frelick and Turang.

I have posted this before but Collins and Vaughn along with Durbin’s emergence are major differentiators. Frelick and Turang have been solid throughout. It doesn’t hurt that Yelich and lately Contreras have trended toward their norms but that was frankly expected. It’s Collins and Vaughn who couldn’t have been visualized in April and the early part of May.

This is an excellent question. My personal view is that Stearns was a critical person who worked with Mark to overhaul the philosophy and infrastructure for the organization. He established an organization with staying power in many respects. Highly talented people were installed throughout the organization and it has led to sustained success. To wit: The Latin American connections they built up in Venezuela and the new Dominican academy. The pitching lab. The outstanding scouting and drafting in the US. Player development. The traits they look for and the way they work the bonus pool are a work of art. Mark has done a great job with following through on what they established in terms of philosophy. You can see a radical shift from his earlier years. Matt was part of that group. As GM he has taken what Stearns did as an architect and maintained it and all the infrastructure and philosophy is as good as ever. He deserves credit and is the right man at the moment.

I’m admittedly too attached to prospects. But this top 30 looks incredibly impressive. Every organization has highly regarded prospects that stall out at upper levels because they can’t adjust to certain things. But, just playing the numbers game, I would wager we have a good number of quality MLBers on our top 30. And even from 30-40 we have other guys with a real chance and who would comfortably be on other teams’ top 30. Regarding the rankings, Dickinson seemed high. I didn’t see the attraction but maybe they liked his floor. I don’t see top 30 yet when there is so much talent listed below him. There were some other good insights though IMO. -
I like Kwan a lot. He and Frelick are good comps for each other. These are winning players. Doesn’t bother me because it’s not like basketball where it’s hard to play two centers or two point guards at the same time. They can play together. He’s a complicated acquisition though. He’s only controlled through 2027 and will require assets going back. If there’s a plan to extend him in due course like you did eventually with Yelich, it would be worth the capital going back IMO.
