Trade value: Junior Guerra
Austin Tatious replied to LouisEly's topic in Transaction Rumors & Proposals
You're telling me that a guy with league minimum salary - in a year when the Braves sent cash with Bud Norris, who is on a one-year $2.5M contract, to the Dodgers of all teams - is not someone that a contender would see any value in? The league minimum salary wouldn't mitigate any risk? The innings issue is an issue with people age 26/27 and under. By age 27 a person is physically mature. C.J. Wilson threw 123 innings as a 22-year-old in 2003, was then sent to the bullpen after missing all of 2004 where he never pitched more than 73 innings until 2010 when he pitched 204 innings at age 29 for the Rangers. Threw 200+ innings for four years, then 175 in 2014, then got hurt about 130 innings into 2015, basically pitching over 1000 innings after jumping from a 73 inning season to a 204 inning season before getting hurt. I think you make some very sound points. I would like to see him as lineups have had experience facing him, and make adjustments, to see how he fares. If he does well then, he may have real value. -
2016 Draft Pick Discussion, Rounds 6-20
Austin Tatious replied to 1992casey's topic in MLB Draft & International Signings
McClanahan and Zach Clark. Outstanding news. McClanahan at 6'5 and left handed bat. We will see if he can play third, but really if he ends up as a nice first base prospect, that's a major need. Love some of the picks - Francisco Thomas, Payton Henry, Chad McClanahan, Zach Clark. There's some good athleticism and major upside there. I'd not be surprised if those four end up in our top 30 prospects in a couple of years. Obviously we have the more obvious prospects when you look at Erceg who has some nice two-way potential, and of course you have a top 5 pick in Ray. That's six nice athletes injected into the mix. The Puerto Rican catcher was obviously taken high so we will see on him too. Whether the franchise can ever convert on TOR pitchers is an entirely different question. -
Lucroy Trades/Proposals (part 3)
Austin Tatious replied to A Swing and A Drive's topic in Transaction Rumors & Proposals
There's no doubt about it, the Brewers have some outfield prospects I really like, but I would trade any one of them for Benintendi. I totally agree that Benintendi is the kid to get. He's only 5'11 170 but Freddy Lynn was not big as a Boston outfielder. Similar size but Lynn could generate power and mash. Dombrowski is not afraid to make a big splash. You never know what can happen there. Having said that, it will be very disappointing if Corey Ray doesn't become a Benintendi level talent. Benintendi was taken seventh in 2015; Ray fifth in 2016. It's incumbent on Ray to produce. The college bats from 2015 ended up in double A by mid 2016. That means this time next year, Ray will need to be in Biloxi and acquitting himself nicely. There is a burden and expectation for getting $4 million as a college bat drafted high. That's the point in taking a college bat high. -
With Andrew Miller and Aroldis Chapman as the big prizes, the reliever market will be very interesting. The Yankees may flip Chapman for more than they bought him for. The Yankees need minor leaguer help. But, it's unclear if they sell but if they do, they want a haul. So many teams need strong bullpen help. Oddly enough, the Brewers have done a great job building their relief corps. Both Jefress and Will Smith can have significant value. Jefress has been emerging for awhile if you look at a multi year arc. It's a fallacy just to throw Jeffress in with Axford or Henderson, just based on a profile, completely oblivious to his stuff and talent. Even more so, Will Smith is a true talent that does not grow on trees. You have to value your own players. People cite to Kodi Medeiros, but if we are lucky he could be a Will Smith. Anyone arguing otherwise does not appreciate how good Will Smith is. If you just look at stats and are oblivious to performance, you may not realize what a treasure this guy can be as a trade asset. There are teams desperate for relievers, and it's exacerbated because of the arms race. If team A gets Chapman and/or Miller, other teams will see bullpen help. The Cubs will make a play and have upside prospects. The Nats would need to react. Boston. There are a host of teams.

Brewer Starting Pitchers
Austin Tatious replied to BrewCrewBlueDevil's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
We've got to get the heck out of Colorado Springs. I'd argue that it gets in the heads of our pitchers and they're getting psyched out. Lopez, Jungmann, Peralta, it's not helping any of them. It's awful what Nashville did to us. They had us wait out their new ball park, all the while dissembling their true motives. They got out with us as soon as they got a new ballpark. But sometimes in business, these things happen. I am not aware of a good solution right now. Fresno, San Antone. I just don't know what we can do, but let's hope Gord Ash (special projects emissary, including this issue) has something up his sleeve to solve this point. Maybe Attanasio can throw money at it. With our low payroll, I'd like to see him make some sound capital investments in the organization, both in terms of player acquisition (taking on or offsetting salary as needed to optimize prospect return on trades, spending on the int'l market, etc) and other expenditures (minor league affiliations, ballparks, improved scouting and player development, better instruction in minors, etc). -
Trade value: Junior Guerra
Austin Tatious replied to LouisEly's topic in Transaction Rumors & Proposals
I like Junior Guerra but no one knows if he's just a wonder because he's going through other team's lineups the first time. It will be more telling to see how he does as teams see him again and again and have a better look and book on him. Thus, if I'm another team, I'd be wary of trading for him unless my scouts see something devastating in his stuff that transcends everything. His split finger pitch has been the buzz but I think we need to see if his performance lasts through the second or third time teams see him. If he keeps rolling into mid-season next year, then you may have a trade chip with value. Until then, let's keep him. -
Here's a blurb from Rosenthal mentioning a variety of issues. http://www.foxsports.com/mlb/video?vid=717568579582 It's interesting he mentions young Brewers starters. Stearns has a high price for them as controllable pieces. I'm sure it comes down to really Jimmy Nelson. Zach Davies is so young I can't imagine trading him makes much sense for buyer or seller. Chase Anderson? I really think Rosenthal is referring to Nelson and that the Brewers have a high ask there. I don't get the hate Nelson gets on this site. He's a solid number 3 pitcher unless you want to overthink things. Personally, I like supporting and advocating for my guys, not knocking them down, but that's just me. To each their own and I'm not going to tell other smart people how to think. He's a bulldog. If he gets moved, IMO he has significant value, either to create a haul in a package with a star hitter or by himself.

I'm sure you guys saw it, but it looks like the Brewers made 9 signings. Carmona looks interesting to me. Maybe Abreu too. We will see in time. I will say this. I don't believe there was much fanfare for Orlando Arcia when he signed. So, you never know. You could put all your eggs in one basket with someone like Gilbert Lara, or spread it out amongst nine guys. We've tried it both ways. It will be interesting to see how it all plays out. I would LOVE to see MLB adopt an international draft and maybe raise the minimum age to 18. The rush to grab kids at 16 seems too fast. First of all, that's so young that it can be difficult to project them. But more importantly, you see kids in impoverished countries abandon school, etc. Education, language skills, etc., are tools that can help you develop as a ballplayer too. If a kid doesn't get educated in Spanish, in the way we all take English in school, then he will have trouble switching over and learning English too. Moreover, by definition, most of these kids will not end up as MLB stars. At least finish high school so there's a foundation. You see Sophia's report on the Dominican, and kids desert school at 12-13 years old. That's not good for anyone. It's not just uncivilized. You're going to have trouble in life.

Middlebrooks has been on fire for awhile after a dismal start. I'm interested in seeing him get a chance. Cecchini has been playing first so it will be interesting to see if he goes to 3rd. Broxton looks like a ballplayer. He looks great in his uni. But, let's be fair. He's not a major leaguer right now. He needs to put it together. I'm not giving up on him because you see some tools. You could argue that he's had enough time in the Pirates system but I feel like he could still put it together and be a backup outfielder with range. Nobody is going to argue he's a first division starting center fielder and it would be an upset if that ever happens. Nieuwenhuis and Flores are not bad extra outfielders. You could do worse. But as starters, not so much. I kind of like them both as backups though.

Landing spots for Aaron Hill
Austin Tatious replied to LouisEly's topic in Transaction Rumors & Proposals
Where did I hear that before, I wonder? Parra. Hmm interesting. I always get a kick out of the guys who love to undersell our guys and act like every other team would never give value. Thank God that mentality is not sitting in the Brewer front office. Hill is at .280 and been a very nice surprise. Nice Renaissance half of a season. He's somebody I'd move quickly if we could because I'd be cautious on him staying as a .280 guy. -
2016 Draft Pick Discussion, Rounds 1-5
Austin Tatious replied to 1992casey's topic in MLB Draft & International Signings
Back on the placement issue, Tom Flanagan was on the broadcast tonight, in case anyone missed it. He pointedly said that Erceg may get a bump quickly to the Timber Rattlers. As a fan, you can get a feel for these things by observing over time. Based on Erceg's experience level, talent, and draft pedigree, he has all the hallmarks of getting out of Helena quickly. -

At least Ray came in underslot. A number of posters assured everyone that he was not an underslot guy but it turns out he was by almost $300,000. That's the thing, you can pontificate all you want, but fact checking can come back to get you because things actually turn out one way or another. Here, Ray is in fact an underslot guy. -
I agree with ZB. I really was hoping that Lopez had turned a corner. He had been a young guy who was developing. It seemed like it was coming together for him. That's why he moved up to a top 3 prospect on some rankings for the system. As for Davies, I like him. I like his pace, craftiness, and I feel like he's a competitive kid. It's fair to be cautious because young pitchers have to deal with teams adjusting to him as they see him again and again. I feel good about him because he knows how to pitch. I think he can be a solid back end of the rotation guy (4-5 spots). Anything above that is gravy. The organization lacks #1 and #2 starters. That's the issue. Maybe we can get a #2 starter prospect for Luc. Even if that happens, we need more. I like Diplan. Not sure where Ponce is with his arm but I have liked him. Maybe Kirby can emerge when he comes back next year. Can Lopez return to his positive trend line? We still need more.

2016 Draft Pick Discussion, Rounds 1-5
Austin Tatious replied to 1992casey's topic in MLB Draft & International Signings
Arguing? Umm? I don't think anyone can draw a conclusion after as little as 30 at-bats. A few 0-4 games and his stats are nothing special. I'd think one would need at least 100 at-bats before one could really decide how he is doing. That's fine but I never once mentioned that Erceg was doing well. In fact, I didn't have his stats in front of me. I used future tense to say "I'd imagine he will tear up rookie ball." So your reply came across as a non-sequitur. Erceg played at NAIA level this year, but he was a three year college guy who played at Cal for two years. He's now on the same team as very raw precocious talents like Demi Orimoleye and Gibert Lara. As I alluded to, and others also pointed out, Gatewood is sitting at A so they probably wanted Erceg to play in rookie ball so both guys can play at 3b. I tell you what, neither is a sure bet, but I am hopeful on both Gatewood and Erceg. Gatewood needs to tighten his swing but he's making strides. He also needs to clean up his defense at 3b. He's got prodigious power. Erceg is athletic and can defend potentially well at third. Watching these two jockey for the ultimate 3b job eventually will be fascinating. I will say I love the competition. -
2016 Draft Pick Discussion, Rounds 1-5
Austin Tatious replied to 1992casey's topic in MLB Draft & International Signings
What's your point? Or do you just argue constantly for the sake of arguing? -
26 is a couple of years older than 24. It's not even remotely the same thing. 24 is not bad; 26 is. I'm fine disagreeing here. A kid that isn't good enough before 26 is typically a borderline guy. That's not my aim. I want impact players. You're 26 as a rookie then you take your lumps for a year or two in the majors and now you're 28. You can get some at 24 because college kids come into pro ball at 21 and can take three years. Everybody understands that. On the other hand, high school kids would be in year eight by age of 26. You can't linger that long without getting on a 40 man roster, so your team will be under pressure for that spot. A kid like Coulter is going to hit make or break time next year. He's really lingering. He's got the rest of this season and next year to show something.

2016 Draft Pick Discussion, Rounds 1-5
Austin Tatious replied to 1992casey's topic in MLB Draft & International Signings
Lucas Erceg seems under assigned by putting him in rookie ball. It may be because Gatewood is at Wisconsin at 3b. I'd imagine that Erceg will tear up rookie ball. He's too advanced for that level. -
Fair enough. I understand your point. We can agree to disagree whether to be patient until 26 for most players. At some point of development, if they don't bite as pups, they don't bite. 26 is old for a rookie by most standards and while there may be the occasional kid that age that the light switches for, I wouldn't set that as any bar. If Coulter and Taylor are still hitting .230 in the Minor's at age 25-26, they'll likely be with another organization.

The Nicky Delmonico saga - We finally learn more
Austin Tatious replied to Jim Goulart's topic in Brewers Minor League Talk
Thanks for the additional information. It was enlightening. It's a very disappointing situation. Delmonico let down a club who put their faith in him. I doubt he has any conscience in that. That tells you all you need to know about his character. I can do without low character guys. They infect others. -
You can only discern anything from where Louisville played him is if you thought the Cardinals CF they did play during the season wasn't that good defensively. Then you could question why Ray wasn't played there and wonder if that meant a deficiency on his part. But Louisville could easily have a guy that was a better defensive CF, they were a top team during the year, that doesn't mean that Ray also couldn't end up being an average MLB CF. Ray didn't play in CF because he struggled getting good jumps on the ball from the center field vantage point. It's something he can improve on with experience. He also lacks a strong arm. He may be passable in center in the end, but right now there are significant doubts. You can say, it's not proven he can't play center. It's like proving a negative. The more appropriate analysis is that he hasn't prove he can play center. The burden is on Ray to show it before it can be accepted he can. But no one is arguing he's an excellent center fielder. It's more a matter of whether he can get by. Either way, he should be a solid hitter and tremendous base runner. But hiding both Ray and the young Trent Clark in LF will not work so something has to click. The other poster is right, though, in that Phillips can defend at a high level in center. He's the opposite of Ray. Phillips will defend but is he going to be much more than a bottom third of the order bat? Ok average and ok run production in double A. Long way to go with the bat.
-
Braun was drafted in 2005 and hit 34 homers in Milwaukee in 2007. I didn't double check all your facts to see if there were additional errors. Braun roared through the minors as you expect a top five college bat to do. That's the track Ray will be on. Ray will likely be in double A next year, and should be able to rake there. Dansby Swanson and Alex Bregman are in double A now after being 2015 high picks. Ray will likely be in LF in Miller Park by June 2018. Princie was out of high school so he'd be on a slower pace, although the wait for his massive upside was worth it.

Lucroy Trades/Proposals (part 3)
Austin Tatious replied to A Swing and A Drive's topic in Transaction Rumors & Proposals
Agreed. Bryant, Braun, and these types of top 5 advanced college bats are the standard for Corey Ray, not high school development guys who aren't as old and haven't seen as advanced pitching. Hopefully Ray jumps a couple of levels per year and devastates minor league pitching the way top 5 picked college bats should. Take a look at how Braun progressed in the minors. That's what you want if you take a top 5 college bat. .320 with extra base hits, power. Develop his arm and his jump on the ball defensively. He's got every opportunity. He does come across like a great kid. Now is the time to advance rapidly. -

The 2017 MLB Draft Thread (#9 Pick + #34 & #46)
Austin Tatious replied to ZBTMP's topic in MLB Draft & International Signings
Fair enough, Paul. Great response. We all want the same thing, which is a contender. That's what Stearns is trying to do. Let's hope we get there. I like the players with upside and ceiling that we've taken outside the top 20. I am pulling for all of these guys. -
Landing spots for Aaron Hill
Austin Tatious replied to LouisEly's topic in Transaction Rumors & Proposals
I'd argue that Aaron Hill has been a very pleasant surprise. His value may be less than Parra's last year but that's in the zone. Hill is having a solid season. And, he's an infielder, at positions where it can be a challenge to find good production if you don't have it there.
