  1. Fuld is having a pretty nice year. A platoon with Gomes is a decent replacement for Cespedes. I don't know why the Brewers would want Milone, I'd put Estrada and maybe even Fiers ahead of him on a depth chart. He's a pretty mediocre soft tosser. Oakland seems to pull a couple of these guys out of the ether ever year.
  2. The Athletics can spare some offense, they lead the league in runs scored. Plus it's not like Cespedes was a star at the plate, more like solidly above average. Winning in the playoffs is all about top end starting pitching and the A's have gotten a lot more formidable in that respect. I like the trade.
  3. I think there's a pretty good chance Nelson will never be as valuable a commodity as he is right now. Depending on his changeup and his ability to keep his BB/9 around or under 3 he's either a solid starter or a reliever. I don't think he's the sure thing slam dunk a lot of people here do, flamethrowers with control problems and a questionable third pitch are the type of prospect that's always getting overrated. People always rip on melvin for not selling high on guys. This might be a good chance to do so.
  4. http://www.knoxnews.com/govolsxtra/nick-delmonico-suspended-50-games-for-testing-positive-for-amphetamine_31387126 Amphetamine according to the hometown paper. Nice way to cap off a disappointing season I guess.
  5. They have fans spread over a large territory, but it isn't like that does that much good for their financials. They get 14 million a year from TV money, which is less than Milwaukeee. They don't have a huge payroll, they don't spend a lot in free agency. There is no evidence they're among the top revenue earning teams. Considering how big of a driving factor TV money is, I would seriously doubt it.
  6. St. Louis is definitely one of the smaller markets, and they have one of the crappiest TV deals in all of baseball that's even worse than ours. It's not like they spend tons and tons of money, so I don't see why that's so hard to believe.
  7. That depends on what other teams scouts think about his ability to stay behind the plate. As a catcher he's a nice prospect, as a first baseman hes nothing special.
  8. Colorado would be the worst place in the world for Estrada to play, plus he's only under control one more year. Morris is worthless as a trade chip. Morneau is a solid target, but the Brewers would actually have to give up something they would miss to get him. With his improvement and groundball profile maybe Jungmann could headline, but it might take someone on the Coulter/Taylor/D. Williams tier if there's a lot of competition or if Colorado would rather go for a higher ceiling guy further out.
  9. The concept of this thread is ridiculous. As if other good teams don't have mediocre or bad players on their rosters. The God of depth and roster construction Billy Beane is carrying Daric Barton, Eric Sogard and Nick Punto. Juan Francisco has been medicore at the plate since his first week in Toronto, and cannot play defense to save his life. Overbay's been crushing the ball for the past month+ and has been a valuable piece. He's a good choice in a PH role late in the game because he can actually work a count and make a guy throw some pitches. Hunter Morris is doing terrible in AAA for the second straight year so I don't even know why anyone brings his name up anymore as a serious option. It's a total baseball cliche at this point for fans to hate their managers and think they're smarter than the GM, but there isn't really much for people to criticize. This is the best defensive team Melvin has ever put together. They've got a couple studs up the middle and solid to above average guys on the corners. Davis has a noodle arm, but Weeks is the only one who's really painful to watch. That's a big part of the reason the pitching has exceeded expectations, and at least for me it makes them a lot less frustrating to watch day in day out. A big part of that is saying 'no thanks' to high power/high strikeout/no glove guys like Francisco, which has been a Melvin weakness in the past. If choosing Overbay over Juan is the worst move Melvin makes in 2014 then he's doing better than most GM's.
  10. I haven't read the other Wang thread. Can someone explain what the reasoning is of MLB with this rule #5 and why he has to stay on the big club all season? This is actually hurting him more than anyone because he really needs to be pitching but because we are in a pennant race we are trying to win as many games as we can so we don't want to put him in there giving up runs. 1. It stops teams from stashing too many major league ready players in the minors who have little chance to reach the big leagues normally. If a guy has put in 4-5 years in the minors, isn't on the 40 man, and another team would give them a spot then it's only fair to have some mechanism to make that happen. Obviously it wouldn't make sense if you could take them and then put them right back int he minors. Normally players as inexperienced as Wang aren't eligible to be picked for rule 5 this is a special circumstance. 2. Just because he's not throwing in big league games doesn't mean he isn't pitching. He's probably been getting more coaching attention than anyone else in the system. He's also accruing service time and making more money than he would in 20 year in the minors. I think Wang is all right with the situation all things considered.
  11. ha. scooter just got a hot foot live during his post game interview.
  12. This is what they have been doing for most of the season. Smith has pitched partial innings in almost half his appearances, and plenty of people complained when he brought in Kintzler or Thornburg to face righties instead of sticking with Smith or Duke. Now that Smith has slid into a more traditional setup role RR doesn't know how to play matchups. The poor guy can't catch a break. Personally I think he's done a great job managing the pen.
  13. Can't help but feel this is pretty big for a june series. At the very least it will help us see where we stack up.
  14. Just not getting thrown out isn't the only component of good baserunning. You have to account for what you gain by taking a risk too. Fangraphs BsR pegs them at over 5 runs above average on the basepaths which is the best in all of baseball. When you take risks sometimes you get outs, but the benefits the Brewers are getting from their speed and agressiveness far outweighs that.
  15. The brewers actually rank as the best baserunning team in baseball, but whatever. Believe in your knee jerk emotional reaction all you want.
  16. actually it was pretty close defensible move given the situation with the bottom of the order coming up and just trying to tack on an insurance run
  17. Which are? He still hasn't developed a useable changeup which will lead to big platoon splits, and he's had constant trouble with control throughout his development. It's not hard to see why many see him as a future bullpen guy because he's going to need a couple things to go right for him to be a major league starter. I see him as a Wily Peralta with a worse FB(both velocity and movement) and a slightly better breaking ball. He's far from a lock.
  18. I was talking like in a hypothetical situation where the Brewers hadn't signed Garza. That being said I'd also still stick with Estrada for the time being. People overrate Nelson who has a couple huge flaws in his game, and undervalue the sustained success Estrada has had as a starting pitcher the last couple years.
  19. The throwing stuff is annoying, but Garza has pitched all right so far this year. I think people put too much faith in Nelsons ability to come in and outperform what we've currently got going. He's still a two pitch pitcher who's had always had control problems when bumping up levels. The Garza contract might be a drag in 3 or 4 years, but I think you guys are nuts if you'd rather have Fiers or Nelson in the rotation right now all else being equal.
  20. better lock this thread, cards have deemed it unclassy http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article/mlb/st-louis-cardinals-manager-mike-matheny-irked-by-milwaukee-brewers-all-star-vote-video?ymd=20140618&content_id=80433698&vkey=news_mlb http://cdn.head-fi.org/b/b3/900x900px-LL-b31690bd_Nofunallowedrobot.jpeg
  21. in classic fangraphs style they had to break down the diamondbacks stupidity in minute detail with .gifs and run expectancy tables. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/the-diamondbacks-grit-vs-win-expectancy/
