  1. Where does Adams or Craig play then? Jay more than likely moves to RF at least as a platoon as I don't see the Cardinals getting rid of Jay. More than likely this means A Taveras+ trade for Tulo is probably being discussed. Sounds like StL. is going to sign Peralta for SS. I think Jay is the odd man out on the team. Becomes their 4th/5th OF. You look at Jay's career #s in post season .188/.263/.219/.481 in 183 PAs He's just an OK player but one they have better to replace with. Watch him get traded to the Mets or Mariners or Royals. Or maybe the team is set to keep Adams as a bench bat. Just because Adams would be a huge everyday 1b for Milw, to Stl. he's their Juan Francisco. He's not expensive. Truthfully this is a reward for Drafting well. You have everyday capable players on the bench.
  2. How is this a great roster move when the Cardinals are now blocking their best prospect that is ready for the majors? They get an OF with more talent than John Jay. and can use Jay as backup. It's depth move. Holliday and then Jay/Bourjos/Tavaras in the OF. Looks a whole lot better to me than Jay,Holliday,Tavaras, and was it Shane Robinson with wondering how to fit Craig/Adams in to the lineup while Freese takes up a position Carpenter can occupy. Actually I think Craig is supposed to be a part of the OF so Bourjos Holliday and Tavaras as #4. Jay will be the odd man out. If I recall correctly Tavaras was injured to finish the season? So to expect him to heal and be ML ready come opening day is a lot. This covers Stl. Also still waiting for them to likely trade away somebody for a premier SS. It's a better move to have Bourjos over Jay and Carpenter/Wong over Freese.
  3. Rule 5 protection had to be finalized by last Wednesday. I find it interesting to read the "Luis Ortega sucks" posts when we know nothing about Luis Ortega. The Brewers saved a few million on a very replaceable bullpen part. As long as they don't throw it at a different replaceable bullpen part, or Yuniesky Betancourt, probably a good move. Signs of Ortega likely sucking....He's not even listed on Boston's top 60 Prospect. I already posted the written part when he was signed being a 2time turn down only to be signed the 3rd time around. Nothing reads Hidden gem. I went through the Bosox minor league roundups and his first half of this year it read of him having control problems. Then he had a nice stretch. But still. Numbers wise at 20 in rookie level ball a 3.7BB/9 6.4K/9 1.445 Whip And I must have been right reading about his FB being 88ish with Badler's 87-92 statement. Long Shot Indeed. I'm sure Melvin asked for David Ortiz, and Ben Cherrington rebuffed him. The nerve! Yeah because while voicing my disappointment over who we got in return means I was expecting a Perennial All-Star for Badenhop? Ortega is 5'10" so not a power framed build that could have one wonder will he go from 88MPH FB and grow in to a 95-97MPH FB? Reaching in to the depths of a Teams Rookie League it would have been decent to think theres some projection to maybe look forward to. There's a reason nobody knows nothing on this guy, because he's going to amount to nothing. I'll bet $50 now he never progresses in to AAA level. Now, to spin this positively, maybe the team has their sights on a Rule 5 Player who is left unprotected and this move was to give them the space to draft that player? A Yankees RHP Tommy Kahnle that reads as a guy used as a closer at AA. Sounds like the type of reclamation Closer project the Brewers are up to task to take on. Who knows maybe Melvin said you can have Badenhop we'll draft this Yankees Pitcher in Rule 5 and that was a done deal.
  4. Trade deadline of 2014 after hitting .195 in the 1st half. They'll move him for a 25 year old Single A pitcher with a 1.587 WHIP LOL! But seriously I at first wanted to change .195 to .155 saying there fixed it for you. But, Weeks can't possibly bat under .230 when platooned to face Leftys can he? Either way that trade is too late. If you can trade Badenhop for a completely off the radar prospect to make roster space/ save money? Then what's holding up doing such a trade with Weeks? Trade him 6mil. for that 25year Prospect repeating A level for the 3rd year and be done with it! At least you save some money and create Roster space.
  5. I'm sure Bourjos will turn in to an All Star considering all the hype I've read about him over the last couple seasons of blossoming in to something. Again great Roster move like the Texas/Det trade. Make room for your prized Prospect Wong while shifting a better player in the leaving player's position? So when does Weeks get traded?
  6. For what Badenhop was projected to make. I don't get why the team makes the move today? For what appears to be a Minor League player with maybe AA Ceiling? You can't find anything on Ortega there's nothing of high praise towards him. That is the best Melvin could do for Badenhop? Rule 5 Draft is the 12th nearly 3 weeks away and that is the only thing I can see this move does currently is to maybe protect a player from it? But still why not negotiate for someone who maybe has any kind of ML potential?
  7. You look at the ERA and think oh under 2.5 maybe there's something there. But of the career 38runs allowed only 24 are ERs! May be a poor sign of his ability to pitch from the stretch or mentally with men on base? He's not even ranked in the Sox Prospect page top 60?! As well as, as a Starter his game logs show he pitched more than 4ip once in 9starts. I think I seen a line stating he throws 88MPH? This is a head scratcher? Maybe the name is wrong on who the Brewers got back? Just Wow to give up a cheap RP for...what exactly? Searching for something on Ortega. From some Sox Forum when they signed him: It has been reported that both Perez (17 yrs) and Ortega (18 yrs) signed around the July 2 2011 signing period. Perez (reported 5-11 160) and Ortega (reported 5-10 165) aren't very projectable and not highly ranked both where pass by at the 2010 early sining period in 2010 (Ortega was also pass by in 2009)
  8. Texas was really staring at a problem not only for their DH/1b but for a #4/5 power hitter in their lineup. No more Lance Berkman to try to turn to. Nelson Cruz has to be a tough signing as you're essentially saying to your fan base we accept/support cheaters of baseball. So then Texas is left with aging Beltre and a questionable Mitch Moreland(of .232/.299/.437) for batters who hit over 15HRs last season on their team. For the far superior middle infield tandem of Profar/Andrus, those two won't combine for 15HRs and questionable if they even .725OPS. And that is what Texas is filled with Maybe .750 at best Batters surrounding Beltre. Prince and all 162 games of his .900 expected OPS self is a must have for them. And whether that is at 1b or DH either or, they needed to fill that spot in the lineup long term with someone who is capable of .800+OPS to bat behind Beltre. Other aspects is the idea of Kinsler in the OF or playing 1b to accomodate Profar. Maybe Kinsler like Khris Davis just shown a poor ability to do it? Maybe he told them to shove it after awhile on the idea. I just don't get how this is an awful deal for Texas when they have zero long term solutions for 1b/DH aside from as mentioned above, Moreland and his .299OB/.736OPS to protect Beltre in the lineup? Or Alex Rios to protect Beltre in that lineup. Neither aren't great options. Prince fills it and at the same time likely secures Texas their #4 batter for the next 5 seasons. Again something they were staring at with nobody who projects to join their team anytime soon. Wouldn't it be sad for Texas to live in a Hitters ballpark for HRs and fill their lineup with batters who don't have power? May as well move the fences back 40feet to actually fit their Home Team and not fit the majority of their Opponents Lineups? Prince changes that....Also just think the state of that lineup if Beltre pulled an 2013 ARam next season?
  9. I don't necessarily think this contract is nuts. Russel Martin is about to be paid 8.5mil next season right in line with Ruiz's deal. I mean who would you rather have next season? Martin Maldonado or Carlos Ruiz? If you are trying to win...something Philly continues to believe they are capable of with their pitching and those Aging wonders. Edit Adding: What if this was a Pitcher's preference call? Like the Wolf/Kattaras combo of 2012? Guess who has 3years left on contract? Cliff Lee. And there's an option on Ruiz's contract(How about in case of an accepted QO backup plan?
  10. In the scenario of Aoki out of the lineup. I'm looking at Segura batting leadoff. Mash his .329OB it was with a poor 2nd half and he's 1 year older to prime. You have to expect some improvement. Braun 2nd. In going with new trend of best hitter batting 2nd Braun fits it. Lucroy 3rd Aram 4th Davis 5th Gomez 6th Gennet 7th 1b 8th(Weeks 8th when playing) Did anyone kind of forget that Lucroy has become the team's Vocal Leader? He's been clutch a tough out, his bat is okay for 3rd in the lineup. But in reality this is how the lineup will go: Weeks/Gennett 1st Segura 2nd Braun,Aram,Lucroy,Gomez,Davis, 1b. Yeah You tell me how important it is to have Braun bat 3rd when you can bat him 2nd and keep Gennett/Weeks at 8 vs. 1st all season long? Maybe just Maybe Gomez can show enough in ST to give Segura Leadoff and Gomez bat 2nd like he was tried in the past. Anything to avoid our 2b being Leadoff next season!
  11. I don't disagree that last season was probably a down-year that he will rebound from, but if he was a free agent coming off an .819 OPS season (and remember, he is a 1B/DH with poor defense...) would you give him a $100M+ contract?? I think what's misleading about your comparison is that he wasn't that elite in 2012 either. I don't think he's been the type of player worth that kind of mega-deal since 2009. And given his age it's doubtful he's on the upward trajectory of his career. For what it's worth his BABIP last season was above his career average, so he wasn't just getting unlucky in that way. The bigger problem is that his BB% has been dropping every year for the last four years. Would I give Prince that 100M Contract to play 1b? Probably yes if I'm not a bottom 12 Market and never thinking twice about it. 161games a year of what? .362OB?+ With Maybe Lightning to hit 50HR potential? I mean look at where these contracts are at? James Loney is projected at 2yrs/16mil to play a .760OPS 1b. This year being the first year over .760OPS in 7seasons! Now if you make it 7 years that's 56mil to be a sub .760OPS 1b. Only 44mil more to reach 100mil to have Prince. A man who's never OPS'd under .760 in his career. Now, James Loney's OPS the previous 7years: .778, .574, .646, .630, .755, .723, .756 This is a man the same age as Prince who couldn't OPS .700 in his Prime 26,27,28aged seasons. But found his bat again this year massive improvement vs the prior 3years. Why is it because Prince OPS'd .819 from his typical .900+ self he is clearly on the decline from here on out? 1 poor season by the numbers and he's never going to be the Prince of old...That .800s OPS should be his norm from here on out? I have the feeling Prince will OPS .960+ for Texas this year. Hitters ballpark. He'll be walked more again being the big bat on Texas to have to avoid so, .400OB vs the .362 this season. Players have down years. Sometimes it can be in the case of nagging injuries not disclosed(1 thing to wonder with Prince and his ongoing streak of consecutive games started) Look at Pujols. What the nagging injuries he has, have done to his numbers at the plate. Prince's BA over the last 3 seasons is still above his career avg. His Ks this year are still below what he K'd at 4 years ago at Prime age 26season. The warning signs aren't there of a player you fear in sudden decline. I'd agree with him being in decline if say he K'd 140+ times this season higher than any season in his career but no. Until that happens, Prince is worth what he's owed....Well at least a 100Million type contract for 7years.
  12. My sentiments exactly. Though I'd probably look for Syndergaard, Wilmer Flores for 3b duties, and then Davis....Though I'd rather just pass on Davis as 33%+ K guys just don't sit well with me to improve much. Let's get really crazy here. Braun and Aram for David Wright and Noah Syndergaard? Edit Add: I'd probably also ask for Davis in that crazy trade or honestly Jeurys Familia as a guy who could potentially be an 8th/9th inning guy for multiple successful seasons.
  13. Question here. Prince Fielder traded just now. Clearly Detroit moves Castellanos to 3b now and Miggy moves to 1b with Martinez as DH. Does this open the spot of Aoki to Detroit for Rick Porcello? Thus leaving a Davis,Gomez,Braun OF? Going in to 2014 then with Lohse,Gallardo, Porcello, Peralta gives us a solid looking 185+IP #s1-4 to count on. Now that, I'd be optimistic in 2014 with having. At least with putting 80+wins. You likely also gain more in trade power for 2015/2016 with Porcello vs. what Aoki returns otherwise.
  14. This is an actual makes sense trade for both clubs. Texas gets a 1b/DH they need and power bat they are missing. Also opens up 2b for Profar to finally end all that Profar for so and so super star. Detroit opens 1b for Cabrera and Castellanos gets to move back to 3b. Super Roster adjustments on both sides! And lets face it the money really isn't an issue for either club. I think Prince will Mash at Texas more so than he could playing in the AL Central. And he'll approach 40HRs once again. Something that just seemed really hard for him to do in Detroit/the Central Opponents.
  15. What a deal for San Diego. 1 8mil is cheap for what Johnson could bring. 2, If, Johnson brings it fully expect a QO to him so now SD has Johnson for cheap and a Draft Pick in 2015. Helluva move
  16. Gregory Polanco will step in RF solving their revolving door between Tabata/Snider. Starling Marte now has a year under him of learning the Leadoff roll. McCutchen is a proven bat. Alen Hanson is a SS that while likely doesn't start Opening Day, is a much improved Bat at SS in the lineup when Super 2 status has passed. Tony Sanchez will get more appearances behind the Plate over Martin. There's just so much to love about the youth and talent Pittsburgh has today and tomorrow. Their offense aside from McCutchen doesn't have Wow impact, but next year will be filled with tough outs 1-8. Cole is as good as Burnett so he's covered. Taillon when inserted will be Liriano like. And they are adding Nick Kingham. That's 3 very capable replacements for the 2 you're concerned about. And there's 2more on the way beyond 2014. These are top 40 Prospects in (10)Taillon,(13)Polanco,(39)Hansen preparing to insert in to Pittsburgh's everyday lineup. This after Cole(7) and Marte (40) graduated last season. You seen the impact Segura who was 55th in ranking had on the Brewers. Now you have Pittsburgh with 5 Better thought of Seguras joining/being a part of their team next season. 3 of them Elite in regard top 15 prospects. I wouldn't be surprised if Pitts. won the next 4 Divisions with 94 or more wins each of those 4 seasons. There's a 100win team coming one of those seasons.
  17. So Nate that is saying the team today has no pitching. Which I pretty much agree. But if you and I can see that then why do we keep Gomez,Gallardo,Lohse,Aoki? Even Henderson. Put ARam/Weeks but they are high priced damaged goods. Why keep guys in the 3WAR range or above with expiring contracts if we have zero Pitching to be competitive? Why not look to get younger team controlled players who can be 3+WAR guys on the team in the future when maybe the team finds an Ace and a couple #2s to grow up with? The idea of Miller for Segura is that clearly Mark A. and DM aren't willing to let their team look like they can't play .500 or better baseball. And if your goal if to be above .500 then maybe your goal becomes making the playoffs. The Brewers have to prepare for a Playoff Matchup scenario. Who's the #1,#2,#3 pitchers? And relying on Lohse,Gallardo,Peralta just doesn't do it with Gallardo's season last year. So then Miller, Lohse, and whoever is pitching best between Gallardo/Peralta becomes #3. Also, to consider in the trade is how have the extension talks with Segura been going? Is he a guy that you are offering 7years 45-50mil? Oh is he a guy asking for 7years maybe 65-70mil? If you're that far apart, You sell high now before the 1st half Segura Shine fades if he's more the 2nd half Segura moving forward.
  18. My feelings. I've been pushing for a trade away and build prior to signing Lohse so they should be known. The thing of it is, we say we are a 78-84win team on paper it appears that way. But, Stl. and Pitts Pitching that is coming up....Man, forget the offensive talent, this could be like facing the Atlanta Braves of the 90s...Times Two! throughout the season. And these are all young/locked up Pitching on both teams we're talking about so this could be sustained for the next 5seasons of basically the new versions of Tom Glavine,Greg Maddux, and John Smoltz. Honestly, yes we are a 78-84 win team on paper but facing Stl/Pitts I fear a dominant run vs us in the season series by both where in reality we are only a 72-77win team because we'll be lucky to eek out 4-5 wins vs. those two in each series. Unlike the 8-10 on paper you'd think is possible.
  19. And that's the point of this. The Yankees extended 3 offers last season Gained 2 picks. Extended 3 offers this season. Richest team in baseball gaining draft picks as players THEY DONT WANT!!! leave to another team via FA. The idea of compensation is because a team loses a player via FA because they couldn't come to terms with an extension. The compensation is to help the small market teams when they lose players they cannot afford to sign and keep. NY,Boston they can afford to sign and keep these guys but chose not to. They will gain draft picks. Let's see how would Tampa the king of the FA Comps prior to this. Guess what? They are trading away any player that they'd extend a QO to because moneywise they cannot afford that contract and make money. Shields gone. Price will be gone. Now sure, the players they recieve in these trades will likely be better than the draft comp, but they have to forego a post-season looking team with Price headlining it on their staff to moving forward with 1 less ace and whom they get in return in trade. Meanwhile, the team that acquires Price will A, be a big market club and extend him before FA. Or B, extend that QO getting his final year before FA and then receiving that draft pick comp lessening the blow of losing that prospect they had to give up for him. Let's picture 2years from now. Options all picked up. Would the Brewers extend an offer to Gallardo,Lohse,ARam, or Weeks? Based on the rise of contracts my guess is that is 4 players 1yr deals of 15.4mil or 61.6mil on team payroll. They more than likely couldn't extend those QOs to that many FAs to be. NY? Bos? LA? Chc? Won't be a problem. And there in lies the problem.
  20. Deal...and I would hang up the phone before they had a chance to change their mind. Agreed. Honestly Brewers would have to throw someone to Stl for Adams. I mean straight up Segura and Miller is an appropiate deal. Adding Adams filling 2 needs of the Brewers for Stl one is Overkill. The other recent talks of Tulo interest by Stl. That would be great for Milwaukee long term. Stl gets an often injured SS with high Salary pay and lose likely 2 Stud SP or 1 stud SP and another Stud Prospect. But then again reaching out for Tulo shows Stl's desperation to fill their SS. I think it's worthwhile to extend contact and see what they'd offer in return for Segura. Orlando Arcia is in the SS pipeline and the team signed those SS in International signings(not saying it's certain they are ML'ers) but you take an avg/slightly below avg SS for 2years and improve your Pitching today. But that is only if we are taking Miller in return a true ace ability pitcher.
  21. I just posted a topic in Major Leagues expressing what you are saying but you really simplified it. Rich give QOs, small markets Pitts on AJ Burnett cannot. Really need to see all the small market teams never sign a QO player to even the field so the rich are taking away from the rich. But no, Milwaukee signed Lohse, Cleveland signed Bourn/Swisher. Those signings providing the Rich those added draft picks to your loss of picks is going to lead to the rich getting richer. Personally, the true way I feel this should work out is having a 4th year(not Super 2) Arb process. If that player's command exceeds the amount of money based on what a QO is then he returns compensated pick if the team doesn't agree to a 1 year deal. How does that work on players with 6+ years of experience though? I don't know. Maybe an age 32 cutoff for receiving compensation in picks. Let the Rich sign Aging old and likely declining players.
  22. I've harped how this QO stuff isn't helping the small markets bridge the gap to the big markets...In fact it is getting worse. http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/writer/jon-heyman/24223573/yankees-relieved-grandy-gone-focus-first-on-choo-or-beltran-in-of Yes, the Yankees didn't want to offer Grandy the QO but the idea of gaining the draft pick(in a perfect world NO team signs him) was too enticing not to...and hey they can afford it but he would have locked up CF on that team when they want to go after Choo or Elsbury to play CF for them instead. Big Market team able to take the risk for a maximum gain. Sure that late 20s pick isn't going to likely amount to huge amount but it's the loss of the 1st rd pick/2nd rd pick these other teams lose signing one of the Yankees players that will lead to long term effects. Cleveland was the 2QO signing team last season taking Swisher/Bourn. Yes helps them for these next 2-5years but beyond? Meanwhile the Yanks will be stockpiling all these QO comp picks and if 1st/2nd rd draft picks result in 50% making it to the Majors they are sure to have the odds hit for them big time with one of these added selections. But it's not a problem right? All teams can do what the Yankees are doing! Wrong Pittsburgh couldn't extend the QO to AJ Burnett whom everyone believed was worthy of having extended. Why? Pittsburgh, small market, can't take on the 14.1mil contract Burnett would be getting if he accepted the QO. So the small market team loses their FA without compensation. Can't sign a FA due to the price. and the Big markets not only can extend these offers, but sign the big contracts...All the while gaining draft selections on the small market clubs. See where this is heading?
  23. I haven't seen it mentioned but MLBTR had a post stating the Mets and Brewers discussed a trade of Ike Davis. Same time the article stated the Brewers at this moment in the offseason aren't talking about trades and first are on FAs. But, I have a big doubt Hart is returning to Milwaukee next season. It's fools gold to think he will sign for that home town discount when I can see the Brewers pulling a 5mil with 7mil in incentives deal and other teams going 3/39 for him. He will take that 3/39 Guaranteed long before signing the 5 guaranteed with incentives. So we are without a known 1b aside from Francisco/Halton. I think the calls of Braun moving to 1b is the answer and honestly, a way to get back in fan graces is to graciously accept moving to 1b to better the team allowing Khris Davis to play OF and have his bat in the lineup....Or to keep Aoki's bat in the lineup. From a perspective of how the lineup will look then 2014 and beyond you have Braun at 1b next season and as the 4th/5th OF behind Gomez,Davis,Aoki and then Schafer if Gomez were to sit out. Francisco to me is just a bench bat/1b in that case that Braun is needed back in the OF due to injury. and Hunter Morris is Option C hopefully as a September callup or 1b Backup when an OF goes on DL for awhile with Francisco. 2015 Aoki is gone, Braun moves there and then the hopes are the rise of Morris has occured. Gennett/Segura are a secure 2b/SS and still in belief the Brewers will exercise ARam's option to play in 2015 to play 3b(unless some stoic rise from Delmonico in the minors to show readiness by 2015) Really from a position stand point the Brewers have a good outlook. Morris/Delmonico are the wild cards with Taylor/Roache being the future beyond Gomez and Davis/Braun. Is it out of the question to envision 1b being Braun's next season when Hart isn't resigned and the team's demands for Aoki aren't met? I see it as the best way to go currently depth-wise.
  24. Pittsburgh also has a full season of Gerrit Cole,Jamieson Taillon coming there way with Nick Kingham,Luis Heredia, or Tyler Glasnow in their system. That is 5! potential #1s/#2s they have...the Brewers have 0 1s, 1 2s(Peralta) and then a ton of 3s/4s. Pittsburgh isn't going back to the pack in the next 6years or longer. They built this via the draft like we did in the mid 90s only they had better picks to build from and hit on those picks in pitching. The Central will be owned by Stl/Pitts. battling it out the next 6 seasons they have what all teams desire, young top of the rotation pitching with enough Bats to support it. It is this reason I've been suggesting trading away what is possible (for the right young talent) and look ahead beyond these next 3 seasons to having a strong young club. Gomez,Aoki,Gallardo,Lohse,ARam all of them should on the trading block. I'd actually keep Aoki and trade Gomez and leave Aoki as the 4th OF behind Braun,Schafer,Davis...he's the perfect backup option. The Brewers depth in the organization is in the OF and Taylor is upcoming. Hanging on to Gomez while getting crushed by Pitt/Stl these next years only to maybe trade him in his last season/at that deadline for talent is going to A: give us talent for 3years from then..2020 or B: get us ML ready talent but in trade scale being ML Ready talent means .85 cents to the $1 on trade in talent value from doing so now and that talent being 2-3years away. At least that is how I see trades going down as. It would be like us trading Schafer away vs. a team getting Taylor the man with the higher potential.
